Synthetic vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) administered either intraventricularly or iv caused a significant and dose-related increase in plasma PRL levels in urethane-anesthetized rats. The administration of naloxone, an opiate receptor antagonist, significantly blunted the plasma PRL response to VIP. Increases in plasma PRL induced by VIP were also significantly suppressed by L-dopa, a precursor of dopamine, whereas pilocarpine, a cholinergic agonist, diphenhydramine, a histamine antagonist, and cyproheptadine, an antiserotoninergic agent, did not affect the plasma PRL response to VIP

With the rising incidence of metabolic diseases, the ability to isolate and co-culture primary hepatic cells has become increasingly critical for investigating liver pathophysiology. We present a protocol to isolate and co-culture primary mouse hepatocytes, hepatic stellate cells, and Kupffer cells. We describe steps for perfusing the liver without a pump, digesting it with collagenase, and separating cells by density centrifugation. We then detail procedures for culturing hepatocytes in a defined, serum-free, plasma-like medium to mimic in vivo conditions.

The rate of glycoprotein synthesis by the columnar cells of the human endocervix was measured during one cycle in 12 women by autoradiography. An increase in the rate of synthesis was associated with an increase in the plasma oestradiol concentration. A change in progesterone concentration in the blood did not seem to influence cervical glycoprotein synthesis. The ratio between the different cell types in the epithelium, basal cells, ciliated cells and mucus cells did not show cyclic variation in the cycles studied.

In order to maintain persistent infections, microbes that cause chronic disease have to evade detection by the human immune system. Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare plasma cell disorder mostly involving the upper airway; however, retroperitoneal infiltration is very rare. Kidney injury associated with EMP is exceptionally rare with only anecdotal reports. Herein we report a case of retroperitoneal EMP causing renal failure by the way of direct renal parenchymal infiltration. Renal parenchymal invasion should be considered in aggressive and refractory plasma cell dyscrasias with unexplained renal failure.
