Intron 1 and 22 inversions were looked for in 80 severe haemophilia A patients in India using PCR and multiplex Long-Distance Subcycling-PCR, respectively. Intron 1 inversion was seen in 3 (3.75%) and intron 22 inversion was seen in 35 (43.75%) patients. Of severe haemophilics, 47.5% had either of these inversions. It is thus suggested that screening for inversions may be the first step in genetic testing of Indian haemophilics.

Ixodes ricinus from Italy were examined for the first time to detect whether rickettsiae were present. Using molecular methods, we detected three different spotted fever group rickettsiae, including Rickettsia helvetica. Our results raise the possibility that bacteria other than R. conorii are involved in rickettsial diseases in Italy.

Madurella mycetomatis is the main causative agent of human eumycetoma, a severe debilitating disease endemic in Sudan. It has been suggested that eumycetoma has a soil-borne or thorn prick-mediated origin. We used a quantitative competitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (QC-PCR) to determine bacterial loads in 669 fleas collected in areas of confirmed and suspected plague epizootics. Fleas were collected out of rodent burrows (67.9%) and off of captured animals (24.1%) and rodent carcasses (8.1%).
