Evolution and Utility of Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders in Assisted Reproduction - A Narrative Review.

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) for monogenic disorders and assisted reproductive technology have evolved and progressed in tandem. PGT started with single-cell polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by fluorescent in situ hybridisation for a limited number of chromosomes, later called 'preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) version 1'. This review highlights the various molecular genetic techniques that have evolved to detect specific inherited monogenic disorders in the preimplantation embryo. Literature review in English was performed in PubMed from 1990 to 2021, using the term 'pr

Analysis of Coinfections with A/H1N1 Strain Variants among Pigs in Poland by Multitemperature Single-Strand Conformational Polymorphism.

Monitoring and control of infections are key parts of surveillance systems and epidemiological risk prevention. In the case of influenza A viruses (IAVs), which show high variability, a wide range of hosts, and a potential of reassortment between different strains, it is essential to study not only people, but also animals living in the immediate surroundings. If understated, the animals might become a source of newly formed infectious strains with a pandemic potential. Special attention should be focused on pigs, because of the receptors specific for virus strains originating from different s

Genetic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii revealed highly diverse genotypes for isolates from newborns with congenital toxoplasmosis in southeastern Brazil.

Recent studies of Toxoplasma gondii isolates from animals in Brazil have revealed high genetic diversity. Many of these isolates are virulent to mice. It is speculated that these isolates may also be virulent to humans. However, there is very limited data regarding T. gondii strains from human infection. Therefore, it is not clear whether there is any association between parasite genotypes and disease phenotypes. In this study, a total of 27 T. gondii strains were isolated from humans with congenital toxoplasmosis in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The genetic variability was assessed by restricte

Exploring genetic and epigenetic markers for predicting or monitoring response to cognitive-behavioral therapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder: A systematic review.

Growing evidence has identified potential biomarkers of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) efficacy in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Genetic and epigenetic mechanisms (e.g., polymorphisms, DNA methylation) contribute to OCD pathogenesis and CBT response variability, establishing them as a key research focus. To evaluate their associations with CBT outcomes in OCD, we conducted a systematic review of PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, and Cochrane Library (from inception to January 2025), identifying eight studies that met rigorous inclusion criteria. The identified predictors included: (1)

NMDA glutamate receptor polymorphisms modulate antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia in schizophrenia.

Dopamine receptor inhibition underlies both the therapeutic and adverse effects of antipsychotics, but the mechanisms modulating these effects in patients with schizophrenia remain incompletely understood. Hyperprolactinemia (HPRL), a direct consequence of D2 dopamine receptor blockade, provides a unique clinical model to investigate how genetic variation in glutamatergic signaling influences the downstream effects of dopaminergic disruption. We hypothesized that polymorphisms in GRIN2A and GRIN2B, encoding NMDA glutamate receptor subunits, modify the neuroendocrine consequences of dopamine re

Genetic variations related to the prostate cancer risk: A field synopsis and revaluation by Bayesian approaches of genome-wide association studies.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a complex disease influenced by many factors, with the genetic contribution for this neoplasia having a great role in its risk. The literature brings an increased number of Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS's) that attempt to elucidate the genetic associations with PCa. However, these genome studies have a considerable rate of false-positive data whose results may be biased. Therefore, we aimed to apply Bayesian approaches on significant associations among polymorphisms and PCa from GWAS's data. A literature search was performed for data published before April 20,
