Incidence of Symptomatic Venous Thromboembolism in Proximal Hamstring Repair: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical repair of proximal hamstring avulsion injuries can enable the return to preinjury levels of sporting function and minimize the risk of recurrence in both professional and recreational athletes. While venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a recognized complication of surgical repair, the incidence thereof is poorly reported in the literature. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To report the incidence of symptomatic VTE after proximal hamstring avulsion repair and assess the efficacy of our thromboprophylaxis protocol. It was hypothesized that the incidence of VTE after proximal hamstring avuls

Graft-versus-host disease in the female genital tract: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is the main complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). GVHD in the female genital tract can cause sinusorrhagia, dyspareunia, synechia, and even complete vagina occlusion. PURPOSE: This prospective study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and effects of preventive and prompt treatment for genital GVHD in females undergoing HSCT (n = 40). RESULTS: Genital GVHD was diagnosed in 11 of 40 patients (27.5%), and the most common complaint was vaginal dryness (54.6%). The majority of patients (63.6%) presented m

Low-carbohydrate diets and the risk of pancreatic cancer: a large prospective cohort study.

Low-carbohydrate diets have become a popular approach for weight loss in recent years. However, whether low-carbohydrate diets are associated with the risk of pancreatic cancer remains to be elucidated. Hence, we examined the association of low-carbohydrate diets with the risk of pancreatic cancer in a US population. A population-based cohort of 95 962 individuals was identified. A low-carbohydrate-diet score was calculated to quantify adherence to this dietary pattern, with higher scores indicating greater adherence. Cox regression was used to calculate risk estimate for the association of th

A prospective study of risk factors for hamstring injury in Australian football league players.

This study aimed to explore the association between hamstring strength, age and lower limb soft tissue injury history and subsequent hamstring injury among Australian Football League (AFL) players. This prospective cohort study recruited 125 players from three professional AFL teams. Eccentric knee flexor strength was assessed while performing the Nordic hamstring exercise in pre-season, and injury data were collected retrospectively (hamstring, groin, calf, quadriceps and knee), and prospectively (hamstring injuries) for one AFL playing season. Fourteen players (11%) sustained a hamstring inj

Antiseizure medications for post-stroke epilepsy: A real-world prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The management of post-stroke epilepsy (PSE) should ideally include prevention of both seizure and adverse effects; however, an optimal antiseizure medications (ASM) regimen has yet been established. The purpose of this study is to assess seizure recurrence, retention, and tolerability of older-generation and newer-generation ASM for PSE. METHODS: This prospective multicenter cohort study (PROgnosis of Post-Stroke Epilepsy [PROPOSE] study) was conducted from November 2014 to September 2019 at eight hospitals. A total of 372 patients admitted and treated with ASM at dis

Perioperative cardiovascular changes in patients with traumatic brain injury: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an acutely stressful condition. Stress and conglomeration of various factors predispose to the involvement of other organ systems. The stress response from TBI has been associated with cardiovascular complications reflecting as repolarization abnormalities on electrocardiogram (ECG) to systolic dysfunction on echocardiography. However, the perioperative cardiac functions in patients with TBI have not been evaluated. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study in 60 consecutive adult patients of either sex between the age of 10 and 70 yea

Immediate retrograde amnesia induced by midazolam: A prospective, non-randomised cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Midazolam, a short-acting benzodiazepine, has sedative, anxiolytic, amnestic and anticonvulsant effects. Given its advantages of rapid onset, short duration and low toxicity, midazolam is optimal for any procedural sedation. Midazolam is known to cause anterograde amnesia; however, the possibility of retrograde amnesia has also been raised. This prospective cohort, non-randomised study evaluated the presence and extent of retrograde amnesia induced by midazolam during caesarean delivery. METHODS: One hundred parturients scheduled for elective caesarean delivery under spinal anaest

Response to influenza vaccination in immunocompromised children with rheumatic disease: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prevention of illness due to infection by influenza viruses is important for children with rheumatic diseases. Biological disease modifying antirheumatic drugs have become increasingly important in the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and combinations of immunosuppressive drugs are used for the treatment of systemic disorders, which increase the risk of secondary immunodeficiency. Therefore, we investigated whether children with rheumatic disease can mount a protective antibody response after influenza immunization. METHODS: The prospective multicentre cohort study was
