BACKGROUND: Progressive dilatation of pulmonary autografts after the Ross operation may reflect inadequate remodeling of the native pulmonary root to adapt to systemic circulation. Understanding the biomechanics of autograft root dilatation may aid designing strategies to prevent dilatation. We have previously characterized normal human pulmonary root material properties; however, the mechanical properties of failed autografts are unknown. In bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR), one-way endobronchial valves induce atelectasis of a target lobe, resulting in lung volume reduction in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Despite improvement in overall quality of life, these patients remain at high risk for lung cancer, including within the collapsed lobe, where nodule detection is particularly challenging. Williams syndrome is a genetic disorder associated with various cardiovascular abnormalities, most commonly supravalvar aortic stenosis and peripheral pulmonary stenosis. However, isolated severe mitral regurgitation necessitating surgical intervention is extremely rare. Here, we present the case of a 14-year-old child with Williams syndrome and isolated severe mitral regurgitation who underwent successful mitral valve repair.

Left atrial (LA) myxoma presenting with symptoms of mitral stenosis in elderly males is very rare accounting for 10% of the cases. We report an 80-year-old male who presented with symptoms of orthopnea and palpitations and was subsequently found to have a large LA myxoma obstructing the mitral valve and causing pulmonary hypertension (PHT).
