Ten male chronic schizophrenic patients with polydipsia and 10 nonpolydipsic controls, matched for gender, diagnosis, duration of illness, age, and race, were studied by dual- and single-photon absorptiometry to estimate bone density of the lumbar spine and radius and by 24-hr urine collections to estimate urinary electrolyte excretion. Bone density was normal in the control group, but was abnormally low in the polydipsic group, which had a markedly increased incidence of fractures. Electrolyte excretion was normal in the control group and in the polydipsic group when water intake was restrict

To determine the role of unicompartmental knee replacement in knee arthroplasty and, in particular, the design and function of the ICLH (Finsbury Prosthetics Ltd., London, UK) knee prosthesis, the authors report their experience with 18 patients (15 women and 3 men, mean age 73 years), who underwent unicompartmental knee replacement with this prosthesis. The prosthesis failed in five (27.8%) cases, but in the remainder the results were good to excellent over a follow-up extending to 6 years (mean 4.5 years). The main problem with the ICLH prosthesis is the linear wear of the plastic of the tib

A thorough procedure was developed to efficiently manufacture dogbone samples using focused ion beam (FIB) milling for micro-tensile testing. A Bruker PI 89 PicoIndenter, Billerica, MA, USA, was used as a case study, although the analysis and results are applicable to other micro-mechanical testing systems capable of mounting a standard, Ø12.7 mm × Ø3.2 mm pin, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pin stub (Ted Pella, Redding, CA, USA). Nine dogbones were made from an Fe-45Cu alloy additively manufactured using powder-fed laser-directed energy deposition (DED-LB). Testing showed that fracture wa

BACKGROUND: The frequency figures for epiphyseal plate injuries of long bones given in the literature are inexact and they probably occur with a frequency of 15% of all fractures of the growing skeleton. In order to be able to give correct figures in the future a classification system, such as the LiLa classification should be used, which does not attempt to be oriented to an assumed growth prognosis but is oriented to therapy and makes a strict differentiation between shaft and joint fractures. For epiphyseal joint fractures a differentiation must be made between those where the epiphysis is

BACKGROUND: Carbon-fibre (CF) plates are increasingly used for fracture fixation. This systematic review evaluated complications associated with CF plate fixation. It also compared outcomes of patients treated with CF plates versus metal plates, aiming to determine if CF plates offered comparable results. The study hypothesized that CF plates display similar complication rates and clinical outcomes as metal plates for fracture fixation.
METHODS: The study adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The following databases were searched from da

BACKGROUND: Ten years ago, we reported the results of a procedure in which we translocated the ipsilateral ulna as a vascularized autograft to reconstruct defects of the distal radius after tumor resection, with excellent functional results. At that time, wrist arthrodesis was achieved by aligning the translocated ulna with the scapholunate area of the carpus and usually the third metacarpal. This resulted in wrist narrowing. We then wondered if aligning the translocated ulna with the scaphoid and the second metacarpal would result in ulnar deviation and thereby improve grip strength. We belie

BACKGROUND: For patients with severe polytrauma and fractures, early fracture reconstruction surgery under stable conditions can significantly reduce pulmonary and other complications. However, premature surgical intervention may heighten infection risk, adversely affecting the patient's prognosis. Consequently, determining the optimal timing of surgery is crucial for patients with multiple traumatic injuries. Given China's healthcare context, this study will assess injury severity and perform definitive fracture reconstruction at specified post-trauma intervals. Postoperative infection rates,

Elastic intramedullary nailing represents a new surgical concept in the treatment of unstable shaft fractures in children. The present case control study wanted to examine the superiority of intramedullary nailing in comparison to conservative therapeutic concepts which had been applied so far. 13 children with forearm fractures who were treated initially by conservative measures were compared to 13 other children who received a primary intramedullary nailing. With femoral fractures, 12 children were included in each group. In each patient pair age, type and localisation of the fracture were c

PURPOSE: We evaluated the feasibility, accuracy and effectiveness of applying three-dimensional (3D) printing technology for preoperative planning for die-punch fractures.
METHODS: A total of 107 patients who underwent die-punch fracture surgery were enrolled in the study. They were randomly divided into two groups: 52 cases in the 3D model group and 55 cases in the routine group. A 3D digital model of each die-punch fracture was reconstructed in the 3D group. The 3D digital model was imported to a 3D printer to build the full solid model. The operation time, blood loss volume, and the number

The posterolateral tibial plateau fracture was not easy to be exposed and fixed with usual techniques. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical stability and clinical outcome of the isolated posterolateral tibial plateau fracture fixed with a single horizontal belt plate through the anterolateral supra-fibular-head approach. Fracture models were created by 18 synthetic tibias and fixed with three different fixation modes. Each group was fixed and tested on the loading machine, and final vertical displacement of the fragment was detected and calculated. Clinically, a retrospec

AIMS: We aimed to compare reoperations following distal radial fractures (DRFs) managed with early fixation versus delayed fixation following initial closed reduction (CR).
METHODS: We used administrative databases in Ontario, Canada, to identify DRF patients aged 18 years or older from 2003 to 2016. We used procedural and fee codes within 30 days to determine which patients underwent early fixation (≤ seven days) or delayed fixation following CR. We grouped patients in the delayed group by their time to definitive fixation (eight to 14 days, 15 to 21 days, and 22 to 30 days). We used interve

BACKGROUND: Based on our experiences, we found that a kind of elbow injury is characterized by an olecranon fracture accompanied by elbow joint posterior dislocation with the proximal radioulnar joint intact. The aim of this study was to better define this kind of severe elbow instability, which has not been previously reported.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all patients with olecranon fractures who were treated at our institution from January 2013 to April 2021. Data on these patient demographics, injury characteristics, preoperative and postoperative imaging, surgical management, and

UNLABELLED: We studied 50 patients with AO type C2 distal radial fractures and 35 with AO type C3 distal radial fractures treated by open reduction and palmar locking plate fixation. At 3-month clinical assessments, mean wrist flexion arcs, grip strengths and disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand scores were significantly better for AO type C2 fractures. At 2-year post-operative clinical assessments, mean disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand scores were significantly better for AO type C2 fractures than for AO type C3 fractures. At 2-year radiographic examinations, anterior angulati

Fracture-dislocations of the elbow remain among the most difficult injuries to manage. Historically, the combination of an elbow dislocation, a radial head fracture, and a coronoid process fracture has had a consistently poor outcome; for this reason, it is called the terrible triad. An elbow dislocation associated with a displaced fracture of the radial head and coronoid process almost always renders the elbow unstable, making surgical fixation necessary. The primary goal of surgical fixation is to stabilize the elbow to permit early motion. Recent literature has improved our understanding of

The standard treatment in forearm fractures in children is usually conservative. Unstable fractures of the proximal parts of the forearm often show poor results after nonoperative management so that these fractures usually require surgical intervention. We report 30 children (ages, 4-14 years) who were treated by elastic intramedullary nailing. Sixteen patients were treated by intramedullary splinting immediately after their accident; 14 children required intramedullary nailing after failure of conservative treatment and fracture redisplacement. At the time of follow-up 6 months later, functio

The mangled extremity severity score (MESS) is a scoring system that can be applied to mangled extremities and help one determine which mangled limbs will eventually come to amputation. The MESS is a graduated grading system based on skeletal and soft tissue injury, shock, ischemia, and age. The records of 37 patients having sustained 43 open fractures or mangled upper extremity injuries, seen and treated at the University of New Mexico's Regional Trauma Center between April 1987 and September 1990, have been reviewed. All nine extremity injuries with a MESS of greater than or equal to seven w

BACKGROUND: Ulnar head fractures are increasingly higher with the growing proportion of the elderly people. Failure to achieve a stable anatomic reduction of ulna head fracture may lead to a distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) dysfunction and nonunion of the distal radius. Due to the lack of the postoperative reporting outcomes and the biomechanical studies, it has not been well established about the optimal management of the comminuted distal ulna head fracture. Hence, the purpose of this study is to use finite element analysis to explain the advantages and disadvantages of ulnar-side locking plat

This study examines gender-based variation in clinical characteristics of vehicle-related traumatic fractures (V-TFs) in elderly populations. A retrospective analysis evaluated medical records from 456 elderly patients (≥ 60 years) undergoing V-TFs treatment at a single trauma center between 2013 and 2019. Demographic characteristics, injury mechanisms, fracture patterns, and clinical outcomes were systematically compared between genders. The study population comprised 253 male and 203 female patients, with a mean age of 67.4 ± 6.4 years. Significantly higher rates of smoking (P < .001), alcoh

Complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS-I) is a disabling and frequently chronic condition. It involves the extremities and is a frequent consequence of distal tibia and radius fractures. The inflamed appearance of the affected CRPS-I limb suggests that local production of inflammatory mediators may be implicated in the ensuing etiology. A rodent tibia fracture model, characterized by inflammation, chronic unilateral hindlimb warmth, edema, protein extravasation, allodynia and hyperalgesia resembles the clinical features of patients with acute CRPS-I. N-palmitoylethanolamine (PEA), a membe…
