Use of Mitomycin C in Ophthalmic Surgery.

PURPOSE: To discuss the application of mitomycin C (MMC) in ophthalmic surgical procedures, including dosage, method of application, reported complications, and follow-up results. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Library without date limitations using keywords: mitomycin, ophthalmic, and surgery. The original articles used as references were first graded using a 0 to 5 grading scale devised by the authors to ensure the uniformity of reference selection. Only those original articles grading 3 or above based on this grading sca

L-opsin expression in chickens is similarly reduced with diffusers and negative lenses.

Previous studies have shown that the expression of L- and M-opsins was reduced in chicken retina when eyes were covered with diffusers. The purpose of the current study was to find out whether this is a result of altered spatial processing during development of deprivation myopia or merely a consequence of light attenuation by the diffusers. Therefore, retinal luminances were matched by neutral density filters in fellow eyes that served as controls for diffuser-treated eyes. Furthermore, the effects of negative lenses on opsins expression were studied. Chickens wore diffusers or -7D lenses for

We can't afford to turn a blind eye to myopia.

BACKGROUND: Myopia is becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the world. It is an overlooked but leading cause of blindness, particularly among the working aged population. Myopia is often considered benign because it is easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. Traditionally myopia has been classified into physiological and pathological subtypes based on the degree of myopia present. Higher levels of myopia are associated with increased risk of pathological complications but it is important to note that there is no safe level of myopia. Even low levels of myopia

Pharmacological Treatments for Presbyopia.

Accommodation is the change in dioptric power of the eye. It is a dynamic process that allows focusing on an object at all distances. In order to focus sharply, three physiological responses, known as the triad of accommodation, are produced by a change in pupil size, a change in shape and position of the lens, and ocular convergence. This is modulated by the autonomic nervous system, mainly the parasympathetic nervous system. Presbyopia is a refractive condition that occurs with aging, usually manifesting around 40-50 years of age, and is a result of the loss of accommodation in the eye, caus

Childhood Eye Examination in Primary Care.

Approximately 7% of children in the United States younger than 18 years have a diagnosed eye disorder, and 1 in 4 children between two and 17 years of age wears glasses. Routine eye examinations during childhood can identify abnormalities necessitating referral to ophthalmology, which optimizes children's vision through the early diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends vision screening at least once in children three to five years of age to detect amblyopia or its risk factors to improve visual acuity. The American Academy of Family Physicia

Short-term anatomic response of the choroid to tropicamide in myopic patients.

We aimed to investigate how tropicamide alters subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFChT) and choriocapillaris flow density (CD) and determine the predictive factors of choroid thickness and vascular density in myopic eyes. This retrospective study was conducted from September 2018 to March 2019. SFChT was measured with enhanced depth spectrum-domain optical coherence tomography. The choriocapillaris was imaged using optical coherence tomography angiograms. Ocular parameters were measured thirty minutes before and after 1% tropicamide instillation. Twenty-five eyes of 15 patients (mean age 38.12 ±

[Optical rehabilitation and pediatric ophthalmological care following keratoplasty for childhood corneal opacities].

BACKGROUND: The younger the children are at the time of corneal transplantation, the worse the survival prognosis of the graft. PREOPERATIVE CONSIDERATIONS: Preoperative considerations are significant in terms of accurate parental education, ensuring adherence to treatment and choosing the appropriate surgical time frame (amblyopia versus graft failure, compliance of the patient). Parental education must include the reduced visual prognosis in young children, exceptions being later acquired corneal pathologies such as inflammatory corneal scars (herpes) and keratoconus. POSTOPERATIVE CARE: A

Corneal nerves in diabetes-The role of the in vivo corneal confocal microscopy of the subbasal nerve plexus in the assessment of peripheral small fiber neuropathy.

The cornea's intense innervation is responsible for corneal trophism and ocular surface hemostasis maintenance. Corneal diabetic neuropathy affects subbasal nerve plexus, with progressive alteration of nerves' morphology and density. The quantitative analysis of nerve fibers can be performed with in vivo corneal confocal microscopy considering the main parameters such as corneal nerve fibers length, corneal nerve fibers density, corneal nerve branching density, tortuosity coefficient, and beadings frequency. As the nerve examination permits the detection of early changes occurring in diabetes,

[Study of the Mechanisms of Maintaining the Transparency of the Lens and Treatment of Its Related Diseases for Making Anti-cataract and/or Anti-presbyopia Drugs].

The lens of the eye is an avascular and anuclear tissue that serves to focus objects on the retina. Cataract is opacity within the clear lens that changes the transparency and refractive index of the lens causing significant visual impairments. These impairments can severely restrict the ability to carry out daily activities. Cataracts is common among elderly person occurring in more than 80% of patients aged 80 or older. Notably, we have recently identified key compounds that are effective against cataract formation. Presbyopia is also an ocular disease that typically develops in people over

Diagnosis and Management of Pseudoguttata: A Literature Review.

Corneal pseudoguttata (PG), also known as pseudoguttae or secondary guttata, is a transient, reversible endothelial edema commonly associated with anterior segment pathology. While considered rare, PG presents on slit-lamp examination more commonly than originally thought. We have clinically observed PG after refractive surgeries, in association with infectious keratitis, and following medication use. PG presents as dark lesions on slit-lamp exam with specular illumination, similar to primary corneal guttata. PG is distinct from guttata because PG resolves over time and does not involve Descem

Prevalence of eye disease and visual impairment in Île de la Gonave, Haïti.

Epidemiological data describing the prevalence of blindness and visual impairment in Haiti are sparse. The Haitian National Committee for the Prevention of Blindness (CNPC) estimates the prevalence of blindness at 1 %. Other regional data estimate moderate and severe visual impairment at 5% and 22%, respectively. IRIS Mundial (IM) is a non-governmental organization collaborating with the CNPC to develop eye care infrastructure in Haiti. To estimate the prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment on the Haitian island of Gonâve, to assist in planning of relevant eye care infrastruc

The Glenn A. Fry award lecture 2013: blurred vision, spectacle correction, and falls in older adults.

This article reviews the literature on how blurred vision contributes to falls, gait, and postural control and discusses how these are influenced by spectacle correction. Falls are common and represent a very serious health risk for older people. They are not random events as studies have shown that falls are linked to a range of intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors. Vision provides a significant input to postural control in addition to providing information about the size and position of hazards and obstacles in the travel pathway and allows us to safely negotiate steps and stairs.
