Paradoxical Inflammatory Bowel Disease Induced by Golimumab in a Patient With Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Case Report and Systematic Review.

Paradoxical reactions (PRs) to biologic medications, such as psoriasis, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), have been increasingly recognized. The aim of reporting this case is to establish an association between golimumab and exacerbation or new (de novo) IBD in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (SpA). Our case involves a young patient with juvenile-onset ankylosing spondylitis (AS) who developed de novo IBD following golimumab therapy for active spinal disease. The patient had no prior gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, and AS symptoms significantly improved with golimumab. How

Correlates of Problem Gambling in Canada: The Moderating Effect of Sex.

Numerous studies report sex differences in the prevalence of problem gambling (PG), but the etiological basis of these differences across recognized risk factors is unclear. Data from a large, nationally-stratified Canadian survey (n = 10,044) were used to explore whether sex moderates relationships between PG and its risk factors, including (1) gambling participation, (2) gambling motivations, (3) mental health, and (4) substance use. The sample was 53.6% female, had a mean age of 52.4 years (SD = 15.4), and 61.8% had Northern/Western European heritage. The magnitude of the relationship betwe

Expression and the pro-fibrotic effects of Mesenchyme homeobox 1 in patients with pterygium.

Pterygium is an usual ocular disease characterised by uncontrolled overgrowth conjunctive tissue invasion of the cornea. The aim of this research was to determine the expression of Mesenchyme Homeobox 1(MEOX1) in excised pterygium tissues, and to identify whether MEOX1 participates in the pathogenesis of pterygium. Subjects with primary pterygium and strabismus correction surgeries were included for this study. The expression levels of MEOX1 in all of the slides were evaluated using immunohistochemistry or quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR). The relation between clinicopathological traits an

Dynamic reconfigurations of brain subnetworks in female patients with alcohol use disorder or bulimia nervosa: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

INTRODUCTION: The brain forms a complex functional brain network. This network is dynamically reconfigured to support various cognitive processes. Research on brain network dynamics in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) or bulimia nervosa (BN), two highly comorbid psychiatric disorders, remains limited. Previous studies showed altered static network patterns, highlighting that the network is disturbed, but implicitly ignoring network dynamics. This study investigates dynamic network reconfigurations in female patients with AUD or BN and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Resting-state func

Heartmate 3 left ventricular assist device system in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

BackgroundGlucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a genetic enzymatic disorder that affects millions of people worldwide and characterized by hemolysis under oxidative stress. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have substantially enhanced survival and quality of life for individuals with advanced heart failure. However, their use is associated with the risk of hemolysis, thrombosis, and embolic events. These risks may be heightened in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Given the limited published research on this subject, the primary objectiv

VD3/VDR attenuates bisphenol A-induced impairment in mouse Leydig cells via regulation of autophagy.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor with reproductive toxicity. Further, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (VD3) plays an important role in male reproduction by binding vitamin D receptor (VDR) and mediating the pleiotropic biological actions that include spermatogenesis. However, whether VD3/VDR regulates the effect of BPA on Leydig cells (LCs) injury remains unknown. This study aimed to explore the effects of VD on BPA-induced cytotoxicity in mouse LCs. Hereby, LCs treated with BPA, VD3, or both were subjected to the assays of cell apoptosis, proliferation, autophagy, and levels of target pro

FGF17 protects cerebral ischemia reperfusion-induced blood-brain barrier disruption via FGF receptor 3-mediated PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Maintaining blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity is critical components of therapeutic approach for ischemic stroke. Fibroblast growth factor 17 (FGF17), a member of FGF8 superfamily, exhibits the strongest expression throughout the wall of all major arteries during development. However, its molecular action and potential protective role on brain endothelial cells after stroke remains unclear. Here, we observed reduced levels of FGF17 in the serum of patients with ischemic stroke, as well as in the brains of mice subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) injury and oxygen-glucose dep
