OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical outcome of kyphoplasty on costal pain which develops following thoracic osteoporotic compression fractures and evaluate the factors related to costal pain.
METHODS: From May 2014 to May 2016, a total of 188 patients with thoracic osteoporotic compression fractures undergoing kyphoplasty were reviewed retrospectively. Isolated sternal clefts are rare congenital anomalies. Complete clefts are rarer still with only 23 cases being reported. We present an adolescent girl with a complete sternal cleft. The cleft was treated with autologous anterior perichondrial flaps and pectoralis advancement flaps.

Inserting a thoracic drain is an invasive procedure which can cause several complications. We describe a new complication unreported to date: perforation-intubation of the subclavian vein. This case confirms the need to carefully choose the drainage point before insertion. Deformation of the thorax, especially in obese patients may require incision and digital palpation of the pleural space before insertion of the drain.
