Reward network mechanism in anhedonia and depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most burdensome mental disorders. Anhedonia, a core symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD), is characterized by abnormal resting-state reward network (RN). However, it is unclear whether anhedonia symptom and depressive episode share similar resting-state RN mechanism, as well as whether the RN mechanism is a state or trait-like marker of depression. This study aims to clarify the two points by recruitingboth current and remitted depression. METHODS: Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scans, this study observed the resting-state RN func

Shared Genetic Characteristics of Coronary Artery Disease and Peripheral artery Disease: Insights From Integrated Bioinformatics Analysis of RNA-Sequencing Data.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) and peripheral artery disease have serious effects on quality of life. Recent studies have shown that peripheral arterial disorders increase a person's risk of developing CAD. The clinical symptoms of these conditions include palpitations, fatigue, confusion, shortness of breath, and, in severe cases, heart failure or stroke. Despite these similarities, many diseases have no known treatments, which raises grave concerns for world health. The study aims to identify common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between CAD and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patien

In Vitro Spermatogenesis on Human Decellularized Testicular Matrix Plates Following Exosome Treatment in a Dynamic Culture System.

Testicular tissue engineering for in vitro spermatogenesis aims to restore fertility, focusing on challenges like efficiency, ethical concerns, and the need for a deeper biological understanding. The use of decellularized scaffolds led to better cell seeding and differentiation, and exosomes led to enhanced spermatogenesis. Also, the dynamic culture systems are being explored to replicate in vivo conditions more accurately. In this study, we aimed to utilize a perfusion mini-bioreactor for the dynamic culture of mouse spermatogonial stem cells on decellularized testicular matrix plates supplem

Functional Connectivity Features of Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging May Distinguish Migraine From Tension-Type Headache.

BACKGROUND: Migraineurs often exhibited abnormalities in cognition, emotion, and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), whereas patients with tension-type headache (TTH) rarely exhibited these abnormalities. The aim of this study is to explore whether rsFC alterations in brain regions related to cognition and emotion could be used to distinguish patients with migraine from patients with TTH. METHODS: In this study, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and rsFC analyses were used to assess the cognition, anxiety, and

Effect of combined naltrexone and bupropion therapy on the brain's functional connectivity.

BACKGROUND: The control of food intake in environments with easy access to highly rewarding foods is challenging to most modern societies. The combination of sustained release (SR) naltrexone and SR bupropion (NB32) has been used in weight-loss and obesity management. However, the effects of NB32 on the brain circuits implicated in the regulation of food intake are unknown. Here we used functional connectivity density (FCD) mapping to evaluate the effects of NB32 on resting brain FC. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy women underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after 4-week treatment

Sanger-based sequencing technology for yellow fever vaccine genetic quality control.

Yellow Fever (YF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease prevalent mainly in Africa and Americas, with 20-60% fatality rate in severe forms. Currently, antiviral drugs for the infection are not available, reinforcing the importance of vaccination in resident populations and travelers. Manufactured in 7 different countries, the YF vaccine was first created in 1937 and two substrains are used for production, 17DD and 17D-204. The vaccine produced in Bio-Manguinhos/Brazil uses 17DD substrain and more than 160 million doses have been exported to over 74 countries. The World Health Organization (WHO

The risk of type 2 oral polio vaccine use in post-cessation outbreak response.

BACKGROUND: Wild type 2 poliovirus was last observed in 1999. The Sabin-strain oral polio vaccine type 2 (OPV2) was critical to eradication, but it is known to revert to a neurovirulent phenotype, causing vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis. OPV2 is also transmissible and can establish circulating lineages, called circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPVs), which can also cause paralytic outbreaks. Thus, in April 2016, OPV2 was removed from immunization activities worldwide. Interrupting transmission of cVDPV2 lineages that survive cessation will require OPV2 in outbreak response

Esophageal tissue engineering: a new approach for esophageal replacement.

A number of congenital and acquired disorders require esophageal tissue replacement. Various surgical techniques, such as gastric and colonic interposition, are standards of treatment, but frequently complicated by stenosis and other problems. Regenerative medicine approaches facilitate the use of biological constructs to replace or regenerate normal tissue function. We review the literature of esophageal tissue engineering, discuss its implications, compare the methodologies that have been employed and suggest possible directions for the future.
