Primordial prevention of cardiovascular disease through applied genetics.

Primordial prevention might be considered prevention of the development of disease at its earliest stages or early intervention on risk factors to eliminate increased risk in the first place. In this review we consider how knowledge of genetic causes of early cardiovascular disease can lead to directed screening and better treatment of high risk individuals. While gene therapy would be the most "primordial" approach to prevention of some diseases such as familial hypercholesterolemia, its practical application remains on the horizon. Nevertheless, there is much we can do now to prevent early d

Treatment of fear of blushing, sweating, or trembling. Results at long-term follow-up.

This study investigated the long-term effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatments for patients with a specific type of social phobia: fear of showing bodily symptoms (blushing, sweating, or trembling). Patients were reassessed 18 months after they had finished one of the following treatments: (a) exposure in vivo followed by cognitive therapy, (b) cognitive therapy followed by exposure in vivo, or (c) a cognitive-behavioral treatment in which both strategies were integrated from the start. All patients were individually treated. Self-report assessments were held before and after treatment

Evaluating alternative treatments for homeless substance-abusing men: outcomes and predictors of success.

The present study was designed to explore the relative efficacy of three types of service delivery intervention models for homeless men with alcohol and/or drug problems: integrated comprehensive residential services provided at one site (Group 1); on-site shelter-based intensive case management with referrals to a community network of services (Group 2); and usual care shelter services with case management (Group 3). In addition to assessing the relative efficacy of these approaches in terms of drug and alcohol use, residential stability, economic and employment status, the project also sough

Psychosocial aspects of Parkinson's disease.

Although Parkinson's disease has a definite neurologic basis, patients and relatives experience a multitude of stresses, only partly related to motor symptoms. Subjective and behavioral problems may be regarded as secondary disease symptoms. In an integrated approach, patients and relatives receive psychological counseling and learn new coping strategies for everyday situations. Results show that even elderly patients can make use of structured psychological interventions and change dysfunctional behaviors and cognitions. Measures specifically adjusted to Parkinson's disease are aimed at helpi

Drug abuse in a farm community; a brief appraisal of a research work.

This project was initiated in the rural areas of the Punjab to assess the prevailing trends in the abuse of intoxicating drugs by rural folk, with a view to contributing to future primary mental health care planning as an integral part of comprehensive health care planning. Twenty-four villages were selected from six community development blocks in the three bordering districts of the Punjab. In the rural population, the abuse of intoxicating drugs is mainly confined to alcohol, tobacco, opium and cannabis. Among psychosocial correlates, religion was of obvious predominance. Since Sikh are non

[Psychosomatic aspects of adolescence].

During adolescence physical, psychic and social changes occure more rapidly and to a greater extent than during any other period of live. The marked changes concern not only the outern appearence, but also its intrapsychic representations, the body image. The complex integrative processes towards the identity as man or woman cannot be mastered without a certain emotional and physical instability. This is particularly the case if, in addition, nearly infantile disturbances in the socialisation or conflicts specific for this life period are, or have been, present. They can in the sense of a disp

A Novel Multimodal Digital Service (Moderated Online Social Therapy+) for Help-Seeking Young People Experiencing Mental Ill-Health: Pilot Evaluation Within a National Youth E-Mental Health Service.

BACKGROUND: Mental ill-health is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Moreover, 75% of mental health conditions emerge between the ages of 12 and 25 years. Unfortunately, due to lack of resources and limited engagement with services, a majority of young people affected by mental ill-health do not access evidence-based support. To address this gap, our team has developed a multimodal, scalable digital mental health service (Enhanced Moderated Online Social Therapy [MOST+]) merging real-time, clinician-delivered web chat counseling; interactive user-directed online therapy; expert and peer

Towards sustainable funding for Recovery Colleges: lessons from Germany for advancing recovery-oriented psychiatry.

Recovery Colleges (RCs) are community-based, co-produced educational initiatives that promote personal recovery, mental health, and well-being through collaborative learning grounded in recovery principles and adult education. Rather than functioning as clinical interventions, Recovery Colleges provide educational environments in which people with lived experience, professionals, relatives, and community members engage in shared learning and knowledge exchange. Despite their growing international implementation, many Recovery Colleges continue to rely on insecure, short-term funding arrangemen

Early trauma and psychotic experiences in autism: a neurodevelopmental framework integrating allostatic overload, symbolisation, and stress reactivity.

Adverse childhood experiences are common worldwide and are associated with enduring mental and physical health consequences. Autism, a complex and heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition shaped by both genetic and environmental influences, has a global prevalence of approximately 1% and is associated with increased exposure to adversity, including bullying, social exclusion, and interpersonal misattunement. Such exposures may partially mediate associations between autistic traits and later psychotic experiences independently of genetic liability. Developmental trauma is increasingly recogni

Artificial Intelligence Methods in Early Detection of Autism Spectrum Disorder: A DSM-5 Criterion-Based Systematic Review.

Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolutionize early detection of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by offering a more objective alternative to the subjective behavioral assessments? This systematic review evaluates AI-based methods for early ASD detection in children, assessing the distribution, performance, and DSM-5 alignment of AI techniques, and the methodological quality of existing studies. Following PRISMA guidelines, seven databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, PsycNET, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library) were searched from January 2015 to March 2025; no backward or forward ci

GPT-4 improves sex-specificity in cardiovascular patient education but may perpetuate gender biases: A mixed-methods audit.

Patient education materials for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention frequently omit clinically important differences in disease manifestation, risk, and prevention between sexes. Socially constructed gender norms further shape how health information is communicated and received. Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-4 offer a potential tool for personalizing health communication, but their capacity to incorporate evidence-based sex differences without introducing or perpetuating gender biases is unknown. We identified seven publicly available English-language CVD prevention handouts from m
