Protective factors promoting resilience in the relation between child sexual victimization and internalizing and externalizing symptoms.

Sexual victimization has been one of the most frequently studied forms of child victimization. Its effects are common and diverse; however, not all children and youth exposed to sexual victimization eventually develop adjustment problems. A total of 1105 children and youth (590 male and 515 female) aged between 12 and 17 from northeastern Spain were assessed regarding their experiences of sexual victimization, symptoms of psychopathology, and protective factors. The results showed that all forms of sexual victimization were associated with higher levels of emotional and behavioral problems. Ho

Sickness Behavior in Honey Bees.

During an infection, animals suffer several changes in their normal physiology and behavior which may include lethargy, appetite loss, and reduction in grooming and general movements. This set of alterations is known as sickness behavior and although it has been extensively believed to be orchestrated primarily by the immune system, a relevant role for the central nervous system has also been established. The aim of the present work is to develop a simple animal model to allow studying how the immune and the nervous systems interact coordinately during an infection. We administered a bacterial

Abnormal GABAergic function and face processing in schizophrenia: A pharmacologic-fMRI study.

The involvement of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system in schizophrenia is suggested by postmortem studies and the common use of GABA receptor-potentiating agents in treatment. In a recent study, we used a benzodiazepine challenge to demonstrate abnormal GABAergic function during processing of negative visual stimuli in schizophrenia. This study extended this investigation by mapping GABAergic mechanisms associated with face processing and social appraisal in schizophrenia using a benzodiazepine challenge. Fourteen stable, medicated schizophrenia/schizoaffective patients (SZ) and 13 heal

Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE): An evidence-informed program for children with a history of trauma and other behavioral challenges.

Child maltreatment impacts approximately two million children each year, with physical abuse and neglect the most common form of maltreatment. These children are at risk for mental and physical health concerns and the ability to form positive social relationships is also adversely affected. Child Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE) is a set of skills designed to improve interactions of any adult and child or adolescent. Based on parent training programs, including the strong evidence-based treatment, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), CARE was initially developed to fill an important g

Interaction of paracetamol in chronic alcoholic patients. Importance for odontologists.

For social, cultural and historical motives alcohol (ethanol or isopenthanol) is considered to be just a beverage rather than a liquor. However, from a pharmatherapeutic point of view alcohol is a depressor of the central nervous system. The effects of alcohol consumption can range from raised loquacity to drunkenness, loss of consciousness and death as a result of insufficient respiration. Probably the most frequent pharmacological interaction is the combination of alcohol with other depressors of the central nervous system which increases the depression even further. Some medicaments which m

Gender and minor psychiatric morbidity: results of a case-control study in a developing country.

OBJECTIVE: Women suffer from minor psychiatric disorders (MPM) more frequently than men. Most of the studies were conducted in England and in the United States and some reported the higher occurrence of MPM among women to be modified by marital status and others by sociodemographic variables. The present study intends to address this question in a developing country. METHOD: A population based case-control study was conducted in three important urban centers in Brazil. Two hundred seventy-six individuals diagnosed as new cases of MPM and 261 controls were selected to investigate the role of a

Can you hear me? An exploratory study on the technological barriers experienced by Brazilian teleworkers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the way we work. The advance of communication and information technologies, partly stimulated by the crisis, has strengthened flexible working models. The shift from well-established office activities to remote working can present challenges for workers. This qualitative study therefore aims to investigate the technological barriers faced by tele workers. An exploratory analysis was carried out using content analysis. Knowledge workers from three different organizations were interviewed. The results indicated that the barriers faced by workers were usability

Emerging artificial intelligence advances in oncology: latest updates from the 2026 AACR annual meeting.

Advances presented at the 2026 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting highlight a shift from standalone artificial intelligence (AI) models to integrated, agentic systems across oncology. Platforms such as Synapse enable large-scale data coordination, supporting interoperable and reproducible research. Building on this foundation, conversational and multi-agent AI tools (e.g., DrBioRight, GP CoPilot, Isabl AI Agent) allow natural language interaction with multimodal cancer data, lowering technical barriers. Agentic frameworks for real-world data (RWD) transformation, in

Large language model-supported companion robots and late-life loneliness: A critical reappraisal of relational AI in cross-cultural care.

The growing use of large language model-supported companion robots in later-life care warrants closer scrutiny beyond conversational performance alone. While the original cross-cultural study offers valuable qualitative insights from the United Kingdom and Japan, its findings also expose unresolved questions regarding cross-cultural generalisability, sustained relational value, and the ethical implications of embedding generative AI in companionship technologies. Meaningful support for loneliness in older adults cannot be inferred from dialogue fluency alone, because loneliness is a multidimen

Neuroglia in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behavior, typically diagnosed during early childhood and attributed to altered neuronal network connectivity. Several genetic and environmental risk factors contribute to ASD, including pre- or early life immune activation, which can trigger microglial and astroglial reactivity, impacting early neurodevelopment. In ASD, astrocytes show altered glutamate metabolism, directly influencing neuronal network activity, while microglia display impaired synaptic pruning, an essential dev…

A Novel KMT5B Frameshift Variant Presenting with Autism and Psychiatric Features: Intrafamilial Phenotypic Variation - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Pathogenic variants in the KMT5B gene, encoding a lysine methyltransferase involved in chromatin remodeling, have been associated with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, and various craniofacial features. However, the detailed genotype-phenotype correlations have yet to be fully elucidated. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a four-year-old male patient who presented with developmental delay, impaired social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and language delay. Whole-exome sequencing identified a novel heterozygous frameshift variant in KMT5B (c.618del; p.Glu206Aspfs*…

Sex and gender in inflammatory bowel disease outcomes and research.

Extensive patient heterogeneity is a challenge in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Sex and gender, as well as the interaction of sex and gender with other social identities, referred to as intersectionality, contribute to this heterogeneity and might affect IBD outcomes. An interdisciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, patients, and sex and gender experts reviewed current literature on the effect of sex and gender dimensions on IBD outcomes. The team also investigated the role that stakeholders have in advancing sex-based and gender-based IBD knowledge, as comprehensive

Disaster solidarity and survivor ethics: a case study of Hurricane María in Puerto Rico.

Liminal periods of disaster solidarity in the aftermath of disaster are a common experience of many survivors. These periods have a specifically ethical component in that people spontaneously engage in collective, altruistic action and magnanimously expand their ethical focus beyond normative social distinctions and hierarchies. Inevitably, however, such solidarity seems to wane, and people return to pre-disaster patterns of interaction. Nevertheless, some individuals move beyond opportune acts of assistance to more extensive reorganisations of their lives during the recovery period and reshap
