Disparities in access to and use of diabetes technologies and therapeutics: a narrative review.

This narrative review applies neo-materialist theory to examine disparities in diabetes care across four domains: clinical trials, diabetes technology, immunotherapies and adjuvant digital technologies. Although systemic marginalisation can occur in many forms (e.g. based on ability, language, sex, gender or age), this review focuses on marginalisation based on race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, as these are the key areas supported by the current evidence base. Under-representation of minoritised groups in clinical trials of diabetes interventions may limit the generalisability of the d

Intersecting impacts of ageing, migration, and socioeconomic disparities on health equity: a post-pandemic policy review.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and intensified structural inequities at the nexus of ageing, migration, and socioeconomic vulnerability. These overlapping disadvantages resulted in uneven health outcomes and highlighted systemic fragilities in health systems; yet, few policy reviews have integrated these demographic dimensions into a single analytical framework. OBJECTIVES: This review critically examines how ageing, migration, and socioeconomic disparities intersect to shape health equity during and after the pandemic. It identifies structural bottlenecks, adaptive responses, and

Preexposure Prophylaxis Uptake Among Female Sex Workers in Northern Nigeria: A Qualitative Study of Barriers and Facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, face disproportionately high risks of HIV acquisition. Although oral preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective, its uptake among FSWs remains low, especially in conservative, high-stigma settings like northern Nigeria. This study explored the multilevel barriers and enablers influencing PrEP uptake among this key population. METHODS: We conducted 13 semistructured interviews, including 10 in-depth interviews with brothel-based and non-brothel-based FSWs and 3 key informant interviews with PrEP program imp

Addressing differences in cancer: a framework for synergistic programming in cancer prevention and control.

BACKGROUND: Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide and continues to disproportionately impact certain populations. Several frameworks have been developed that illustrate the multiple determinants of cancer. Expanding upon the work of others, we present an applied framework for cancer prevention and control designed to help clinicians, as well as public health practitioners and researchers, better address differences in cancer outcomes. METHODS: The framework was developed by the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network's Health Behaviors Workgroup. An initial framework draft

"You get HIV because there is no hope" a rapid qualitative assessment of the HIV vulnerabilities of transgender women in three South African metros.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological data show that transgender women are disproportionately affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Data in South Africa on the HIV vulnerabilities of transgender women are sparse. This paper qualitatively explores the structural, personal, and economic factors that contribute to making South African transgender women vulnerable to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). METHODS: We conducted a rapid qualitative assessment in the Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Buffalo City metropolitan municipalities to frame the HIV risk vulnerabilities of transg

'It was like coming back from the clouds': a qualitative analysis of the lived experience of overdose consequent to drug use among a cohort of people who use drugs in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Globally, non-fatal overdose (NFOD) rates consequent to drug use, typically opioids, continue increasing at a startling rate. Existing quantitative research has revealed myriad factors and characteristics linked to experiencing NFOD, but it is critically important to explore the lived context underlying these associations. In this qualitative study, we sought to understand the experiences of NFOD among people who use drugs in a Scottish region in order to: enhance public policy responses; inform potential intervention development to mitigate risk; and contribute to the literature d

A sense of injustice in care networks: An intersectional exploration of the collaboration between professionals and carers with a migration background.

This study tries to understand the power of knowledge within collaborative care networks to provide insights for designing successful collaboration within care networks by combining intersectionality and epistemic (in)justice. Becoming an informal carer for someone with an acquired brain injury (ABI) causes a dramatic disruption of daily life. Collaboration between professionals and carers with a migration background may result in unjust and unfair situations within care networks. Carer experiences are shaped by aspects of diversity which are subject to power structures and processes of social

Pathways to opioid use and implications for prevention: voices of young adults in recovery.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use remains a major public health issue, especially among young adults. Despite investment in harm reduction and supply-side strategies such as reducing overprescribing and safe medication disposal, little is known about demand-side issues, such as reasons for use and pathways to opioid use. Adolescents and young adults who struggle with opioid use disorder (OUD) are multifaceted individuals with varied individual histories, experiences, challenges, skills, relationships, and lives. METHODS: To inform the development of prevention strategies that hold promise for addressing

Factors Associated with Usage of Oral-PrEP among Female Sex Workers in Nairobi, Kenya, Assessed by Self-Report and a Point-of-Care Urine Tenofovir Immunoassay.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective at reducing HIV acquisition. We aimed to estimate usage of oral-PrEP, and factors associated with adherence among female sex workers (FSWs) in Nairobi, Kenya, using a novel point-of-care urine tenofovir lateral flow assay (LFA). The Maisha Fiti study randomly selected FSWs from Sex Worker Outreach Program clinics in Nairobi. Data were collected from 1003 FSWs from June-October 2019, including surveys on self-reported oral-PrEP adherence. Adherence was also measured using the LFA for HIV-negative FSWs currently taking oral-PrEP. Informed by a

Pregestational Exposure to T. gondii Produces Maternal Antibodies That Recognize Fetal Brain Mimotopes and Induces Neurochemical and Behavioral Dysfunction in the Offspring.

The activation of the maternal immune system by a prenatal infection is considered a risk factor for developing psychiatric disorders in the offspring. Toxoplasma gondii is one of the pathogenic infections associated with schizophrenia. Recent studies have shown an association between high levels of IgG anti-T. gondii from mothers and their neonates, with a higher risk of developing schizophrenia. The absence of the parasite and the levels of IgGs found in the early stages of life suggest a transplacental transfer of the anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies, which could bind fetal brain structures by

Associations between e-health literacy and chronic disease self-management in older Chinese patients with chronic non-communicable diseases: a mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) are an urgent public health issue in China, especially among older adults. Hence, self-management is crucial for disease progression and treatment. Electronic health (e-health) literacy and self-efficacy positively correlate with self-management. However, we know little about their underlying mechanisms in older adults with CNCDs. OBJECTIVE: To explore the factors that influence chronic disease self-management (CDSM) and verify self-efficacy as the mediator between e-health literacy and self-management behavior in older patients with CNCDs

Blood Pressure Control Among Non-Hispanic Black Adults Is Lower Than Non-Hispanic White Adults Despite Similar Treatment With Antihypertensive Medication: NHANES 2013-2018.

BACKGROUND: Controlled blood pressure can prevent or reduce adverse health outcomes. Social and structural determinants may contribute to the disparity that despite equivalent proportions on antihypertensive medication, non-Hispanic Black (Black) adults have lower blood pressure control and more cardiovascular events than non-Hispanic White (White) adults. METHODS: Data from 2013 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were pooled to assess control among Black and White adults by antihypertensive medication use and selected characteristics using the 2017 American College of C

The interplay between cancer-related fatigue and functional health in Hodgkin lymphoma survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is among the most distressing symptoms reported by cancer survivors as compromising their quality of life. This study investigates the complex interplay between CRF and functional health (FH) in survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma by using longitudinal data to clarify the etiology of CRF. METHODS: Data from N = 3596 survivors (HD13-15) from the German Hodgkin Study Group was analyzed using bivariate latent curve models with structured residuals to model how the interplay between CRF and FH unfolds over time across and within individuals. CRF and FH were measu

An application of a modified theory of planned behavior model to investigate adolescents' job safety knowledge, norms, attitude and intention to enact workplace safety and health skills.

INTRODUCTION: For many reasons, including a lack of adequate safety training and education, U.S. adolescents experience a higher rate of job-related injury compared to adult workers. Widely used social-psychological theories in public health research and practice, such as the theory of planned behavior, may provide guidance for developing and evaluating school-based interventions to prepare adolescents for workplace hazards and risks. METHOD: Using a structural equation modeling approach, the current study explores whether a modified theory of planned behavior model provides insight on 1,748
