The bioactivity of yttrium and cerium are investigated when substituted for Sodium (Na) in a 0.52SiO2-0.24SrO-0.24-xNa2O-xMO glass-ceramics (where x = 0.08 and MO = Y2O3 or CeO2). Bioactivity is monitored through pH and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry where pH of simulated body fluid ranged from 7.5 to 7.6 and increased between 8.2 and 10.0 after 14-day incubation with the glass-ceramic disks. Cinnabar, a naturally occurring mercuric sulfide (HgS), has long been used in Chinese mineral medicine for more than 2000 years. Although mercury is well-known for its toxicity, whether cinnabar induces neurotoxicity, especially in infants and children, is unknown. Thaumatin-like proteins (TLPs) are induced by a variety of phytopathogens in many plants and several TLPs are allergenic. Previously, we isolated three TLP-encoding cDNAs (Cry j 3.1, Cry j 3.2 and Cry j 3.3) from a cDNA library derived from the pollen of Cryptomeria japonica D. Don. The presence of high-affinity binding sites for antidiabetic sulfonylureas (SUs) and the expression of SU receptor (SUR) messenger RNA in the adenohypophyseal cells have recently been reported. In this study, we examined the effects of SU on POMC gene expression and ACTH secretion using the AtT20PL cell line, a subclone of AtT20 in which the rat POMC 5'-promoter-luciferase fusion gene was stably incorporated. A representative SU glibenclamide inhibited the basal POMC 5'-promoter activity. In contrast, glibenclamide enhanced forskolin- or CRH-induced POMC expression in a dose-dependent manner.

Regulatory volume decrease (RVD) following hypo-osmotic stimulation was studied using videometric methods in isolated proximal renal tubules from trout (Salmo trutta). The relative tubule diameter increased by 132.0+/-4.8 % (maximum swelling within 1 min at 15 and 25 degrees C and within 4 min at 10 degrees C) following a change from iso-osmotic (290 mosmol kg-1) to hypo-osmotic (160 mosmol kg-1) Ringer's solution. The tubule diameter subsequently decreased to approximately one-quarter of the maximal value. Ouabain (1 mmol l-1) reduced cell swelling and inhibited the RVD response by 28.0+/-10.

A new method, the Plaque Glycolysis and Regrowth Method (PGRM), is described for the evaluation of antimicrobial effects on plaque metabolism in vivo. The method relies on the experimental observation that in vivo sampled dental plaques, collected from different quadrants of the dentition, produce equivalent rates of metabolic activity and regrowth when similarly dispersed and normalized into incubation media.
