Age at onset and clinical correlates in body dysmorphic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Age at onset is an important clinical feature of all disorders. However, no prior studies have focused on this important construct in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). In addition, across a number of psychiatric disorders, early age at disorder onset is associated with greater illness severity and greater comorbidity with other disorders. However, clinical correlates of age at onset have not been previously studied in BDD. METHODS: Age at onset and other variables of interest were assessed in two samples of adults with DSM-IV BDD; sample 1 consisted of 184 adult participants in a stu

Behavioral and neurological foundations for the moral and legal implications of intoxication, addictive behaviors and disinhibition.

Disinhibition and addictive behaviors are related and carry moral implications. Both typically involve diminished consideration of negative consequences, which may result in harm to oneself or others. Disinhibition may occur on state and trait levels, and addictive substances may elicit disinhibitory states, particularly when intoxication is reached. Data suggest that trait disinhibition and addictions may be conceptualized as involving misdirected motivation with underlying biological bases including genetic factors, alterations in neurotransmitter systems and differences in regional brain fu

Validation of the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) in a nonclinical sample of German adolescents.

We tested the psychometric properties of the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) in a sample of nonclinical adolescents, examined the association with current psychopathology, and tested if "hypomanic" adolescents differ from other participants regarding HCL-scores and psychopathology. A total of 294 students completed the HCL-32 and the SDQ, a screening for psychopathology. In adolescence, the internal structure of hypomania seems to be represented by a triple structure. The first factor "active-elated" is an indicator of symptoms related to energy and activity. The adult factor "irritable-risk taki

Introduction to bipolar disorder and comorbid conditions.

Bipolar disorder presents with symptoms that overlap with other, often comorbid, psychiatric disorders, such as borderline personality disorder, substance use disorder, and unipolar depression, and also often co-occurs with medical disorders. Appropriate screening for manic and hypomanic symptoms may lessen the frequency of misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder as unipolar depression, which has serious treatment implications. Further, following the appropriate guidelines for monitoring the physical health of patients with bipolar disorder, especially those treated with mood stabilizers and atypical

Electrical stimulation and substance abuse treatment.

The use of electrical currents for the treatment of disease has been considered since antiquity but it has only been in recent years that suitable devices have been available to scientific investigators to provide stimulation currents for clinical use. These devices have been used extensively for the relief of intractable pain and are an accepted treatment modality today. Other investigators have turned to the investigation of the effects of tiny currents, less than one milliampere, applied to the head. Recent investigations have been successful in the alleviation of such symptoms as insomnia,

Social Determinants of Health in People Living with Psychiatric Disorders: The Role of Pharmacists.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDOH) affect outcomes of people living with psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders. As experts in medication optimization, pharmacists play a vital role in identifying and addressing medication-related problems associated with SDOH. However, there is a paucity of literature on how pharmacists can be part of the solution. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to provide a narrative review and commentary on the intersection between SDOH, medication-related outcomes in people living with psychiatric disorders, and the role of pha

Encounters between people with mental health and/or substance use problems and ambulance clinicians: a qualitative interview study in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Interactions between ambulance clinicians and people with mental health and/or substance use problems are frequent, and international studies show that these encounters are often shaped by stigma, power dynamics and challenges to patient autonomy. However, there is limited research exploring patients' experiences of ambulance services in the Norwegian context. This study addresses this knowledge gap. METHODS: This qualitative study was based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 23 people with mental health and/or substance use problems recruited from primary and specialize

Daily patterns of opioid and stimulant use and associated risk-behavior outcomes: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: People who use opioid and stimulant drugs have high overdose rates. Little is known about day-to-day variation in patterns of use of these drugs and their association with other drug use behaviors. METHODS: Participants with past-two-week opioid or stimulant use completed daily cellphone surveys over a two-week period. We classified each day's opioid-stimulant combination into five mutually exclusive groups. We estimated associations of each group with prevalence of 7 same-day outcomes -alcohol, cigarette, THC, and tranquilizer use, injecting drugs, using xylazine, and using drugs

Justice system experiences and health risks among Medicaid and uninsured populations receiving treatment for substance use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: We explored the relationship between justice system experiences and health risks using a sample of Medicaid and uninsured patients in addiction treatment, focusing on four health behaviors correlated with premature mortality: (1) opioid misuse, (2) overdose, (3) multi-substance use, (4) recurrent treatment admissions. METHODS: From 2021 to 2023, electronic in-depth life-course history surveys were administered in-person with adult patients selected from a community-based public health case management system while undergoing addiction treatment in Michigan, USA. This study utiliz

Prevention of adolescent stimulant drug use: Do the home life environment and extracurricular activities influence this? Findings from the Irish Planet Youth Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Stimulant drug use during adolescence (e.g., cocaine or ecstasy) can lead to a myriad of adverse health effects, but it remains uncertain how the home life environment and involvement in structured extracurricular activities may correlate with teenage stimulant use. METHODS: We conducted an analysis utilising data from the 2020 Planet Youth survey, an anonymous questionnaire administered to school-going adolescents in the western region of Ireland. All adolescents with complete demographic information on age, gender and drug use were included in the analysis. Multivariable-adjus

Impact of Preexisting Substance Use Disorders on Prolonged Opioid Use and Postoperative Complications After Burns.

Previous studies have linked preexisting substance use disorders (SUDs) to adverse postoperative outcomes in burn patients, yet their impact on opioid use remains unclear. This retrospective cohort study compares the effects of various substances on opioid use after burns and aims to analyze the risks and whether they differ among substances. The TriNetX database was queried for burn patients aged 18 years and older with preexisting alcohol, cannabis, or tobacco use disorders, who were placed in their respective cohorts. These patients were matched to a nonsubstance use disorder cohort using p
