Some individuals remain uninfected with human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) despite multiple high-risk sexual exposures. We studied a cohort of 25 subjects with histories of multiple high-risk sexual exposures to HIV-1 and found that their CD8+ lymphocytes had greater anti-HIV-1 activity than did CD8+ lymphocytes from nonexposed controls. The in vitro immune response of uremic and transplanted patients was studied by determining lymphocyte surface and functional markers. Because of lymphopenia, the absolute number of T and B cells are diminished in uremia and transplantation. BACKGROUND: Immunosuppression therapy after lung transplantation fails to prevent bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) in many patients, primarily a disease of the small airways. We have reported that BOS is associated with a lack of suppression of cytotoxic mediators, and proinflammatory cytokines, in peripheral blood T, NKT-like (particularly CD8+) and NK cells. We also showed a loss of glucocorticoid receptor (GCR) in proinflammatory lymphocytes after transplant. It is unknown whether these proinflammatory lymphocytes target the small and/or large airways in BOS.

OBJECTIVE: CD4 and CD8 antigen coexpression occurs not only on blastic T-cell malignancies, but also on a small subset of mature lymphocytes. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of this population of cells and to identify features that can be used to differentiate them from T lymphoblasts.

METHODS: In this prospective study, peripheral blood lymphocytes of 226 patients afflicted with choroidal melanoma were analyzed by flow cytometry and compared with those of 49 age-matched and gender-matched control subjects.
