Combined cognitive assessment and automated MRI volumetry improves the diagnostic accuracy of detecting MCI due to Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) confers a high annual risk of 10-15 % of conversion to Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. MRI at … hin a mean follow-up time of 74.7 ± 36.8 months (mean ± SD, range 12 to 130 months). LDA identified temporal lobe atrophy and hippocampal subfield volumes in combination with cognitive measures of verbal memory, verbal fluency and executive functions to correctly classify 71.4.% of MCI subjects converting to AD dementia and 92.7 % with stable MCI. Lower baselin …

Doublecortin-Expressing Neurons in Human Cerebral Cortex Layer II and Amygdala from Infancy to 100 Years Old.

A cohort of morphologically heterogenous doublecortin immunoreactive (DCX +) "immature neurons" has been identified in the cerebral cortex largely around layer II and the amygdala largely in the paralaminar nucleus (PLN) among various mammals. To gain a wide spatiotemporal view on these neurons in humans, we examined layer II and amygdalar DCX + neurons in the brains of infants to 100-year-old individuals. Layer II DCX + neurons occurred throughout the cerebrum in the infants/toddlers, mainly in the temporal lobe in the adolescents and adults, and only in the temporal cortex surrounding the am…

Low glycemic index diet restrains epileptogenesis in a gender-specific fashion.

Dietary restriction, such as low glycemic index diet (LGID), have been successfully used to treat drug-resistant epilepsy. However, if such diet could also counteract antiepileptogenesis is still unclear. Here, we investigated whether the administration of LGID during the latent pre-epileptic period, prevents or delays the appearance of the overt epileptic phenotype. To this aim, we used the Synapsin II knockout (SynIIKO) mouse, a model of temporal lobe epilepsy in which seizures manifest 2-3 months after birth, offering a temporal window in which LGID may affect epileptogenesis. Pregnant SynI…

Brain activity changes with emotional words in different stages of psychosis.

BACKGROUND: To date, a large number of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have been conducted on psychosis. However, littl … adigm used in psychotic patients at different stages of the disease. Our results suggested that the temporal lobe might be a key issue in the physiopathology of psychosis, although abnormal activation could also be derived from a connectivity problem. There is lower activation in the early stage and evolution to greater activation when patients become chronic. …

Mapping the human praxis network: an investigation of white matter disconnection in limb apraxia of gesture production.

Left hemispheric cerebral stroke can cause apraxia, a motor cognitive disorder characterized by deficits of higher-order motor skills such a … aphical mapping in uncovering the structural praxis network. A striking role of middle and superior temporal lobe disconnection, including temporo-temporal short association fibres, was found, suggesting strong involvement of the temporal lobe in the praxis network. Further, the results stressed the importance of subcortical disconnections for the emergence of …

Brain region volumes and their relationship with disability progression and cognitive function in primary progressive multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Evidence on regional changes resulting from neurodegenerative processes underlying primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) is still limited. We assessed brain region volumes and their relationship with disability progression and cognitive function in PPMS patients. METHODS: This was an MRI analysis of 43 patients from the prospective Understanding Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (UPPMS) cohort study. MRI scans were performed within 3 months before enrollment and at month 12. RESULTS: Gray matter volume of declive and white matter volumes adjacent to left

Poststroke acute dysexecutive syndrome, a disorder resulting from minor stroke due to disruption of network dynamics.

Stroke patients with small central nervous system infarcts often demonstrate an acute dysexecutive syndrome characterized by difficulty with … determined differences in activation patterns within the visual cortex, fusiform gyrus, and lateral temporal lobe. At visit 1, MoCA scores were significantly lower for patients than controls (median [interquartile range] = 26.0 [4] versus 29.5 [3], P = 0.005), and patient reaction times were increased. The amplitude of activation was significantly lower after i …

Current Topics in Epilepsy Surgery.

This article reviews the current topics in the field of epilepsy surgery. Each type of epilepsy is associated with a different set of questions and goals. In mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) with hippocampal sclerosis (HS), postoperative seizure outcome is satisfactory. A recent meta-analysis revealed superior seizure outcome after anterior temporal lobectomy compared with selective amygdalohippocampectomy; in terms of cognitive outcome; however, amygdalohippocampectomy may be beneficial. In temporal lobe epilepsy with normal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), postoperative seizure outcome …

Auditory P300 abnormalities and left posterior superior temporal gyrus volume reduction in schizophrenia.

Abnormalities in the auditory P300 event-related potential are one of the most robust findings in schizophrenia. To investigate the brain source(s) of this major functional abnormality, we combined P300 recordings with the use of a new generation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to examine specific temporal lobe gray matter regions of interest in schizophrenics and normal controls. In schizophrenics, gray matter volume reductions in the left posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG), which includes Heschl's gyrus and the planum temporale, were highly and specifically associated wit…

Unusual ganglioglioma with extensive calcification and ossification.

Ganglioglioma is a slow-growing relatively low-grade mixed glioneuronal tumor with most cases corresponding to the WHO Grade I category. It frequently presents with seizures. The temporal lobe is the most common location followed by frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes. These generally behave in a benign fashion and have a favorable prognosis. We describe a case of a 24-year-old male presenting with convulsions and a calcified parieto-occipital mass. This mass removed from the parietal lobe showed neoplastic glial and dysplastic neuronal tissue amidst extensive areas of calcification and foc…

Hereditary spastic paraparesis with dementia, amyotrophy and peripheral neuropathy. A neuropathological study.

Hereditary, probably autosomal recessive, spastic paraparesis in two siblings was associated with dementia of frontal lobe type, amyotrophy and peripheral sensory and motor polyneuropathy. Neuropathological findings correlate with neurological deficits, although neuron loss in the caudate and putamen, substantia nigra, and loss of Purkinje cells were clinically silent. Loss of neurons occurred in all cortical layers of the prefrontal lobe and superior temporal gyrus. Immunohistochemical studies showed reduced parvalbumin immunoreactivity in dendrites, and reduced numbers of calbindin D28k-immu
