A 50-year-old woman presented with mid-thoracic back pain that radiated to the left rib cage in a radicular manner. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extradural mass compressing the left T9 nerve root. The mass was adjacent to a degenerated T9-10 facet joint with an enhancing low signal intensity rim. Recognition of the characteristic imaging findings of an intraspinal synovial cyst resulted in the correct preoperative diagnosis despite the unusual location of this lesion at T9-10.

From 1981 to 1990, 297 cases of carcinoma of the thoracic esophagus were resected in our department. Among these cases, 225 cases (84.3%) were reconstructed cervical esophagogastrostomy via the posterior mediastinal route. In this paper, these 225 cases were analysed to evaluate the usefulness of this procedure which was developed by S. Abo in 1975. We employed high-speed multisliced X-ray-computed tomography to determine the relative volume contributions of rib cage (delta Vrc) and diaphragmatic motion (delta Vdi) to tidal volume (VT) during spontaneous breathing in 6 anesthetized dogs lying supine. Forty-six patients with clinical and histologic criteria of bullous pemphigoid, and on whom direct immunofluorescence testing had been done, were analyzed by anatomic region of the lesions and by the region from which the immunofluorescence biopsy specimens were taken. One third of immunofluorescence tests from the lower extremities were negative, compared with only 3% from all other areas. The possible reasons for this result are discussed. The lower extremity should probably be avoided as a biopsy site for immunofluorescence in bullous pemphigoid.

Effects of electrical stimulation of the greater splanchnic nerves on T2-T4 spinal neurons were determined in 16 cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. Of 77 neurons responding to somatic stimuli, 65 (84%) were excited, inhibited, or both excited and inhibited by splanchnic input. The association between mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and atypical chest pain has been well-described. Numerous theories have been proposed to explain this association. A number of lines of evidence suggest that underlying ischemia may cause chest pain in some patients with MVP. The topographic organization of the motor nuclei supplying individual thoracic muscles in postnatal rats was investigated by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelling from the periphery. In the space flights by the USA and USSR to date adequate experience has been obtained on the adaptation of man to living conditions in space--with the technical assistance of an artificial protective atmosphere in the space ship or space suit--and to the singular factor of "weightlessness" (microgravity, low gravity) and how he re-adjusts again after returning to a gravitational field. There is no ultimate or absolute physiological barrier for long term space flight--with one exception: decalcification of the skeleton. For short space flights, however, space sickness is a serious disorder.
