Right temporal-lobe contribution to global visual processing.

The performance of 92 patients with unilateral temporal- or frontal-lobe excisions and 35 normal control subjects was tested under two experimental conditions (global, local) of a Stroop-type reaction-time task, employing either hierarchically structured letters or abstract designs as stimuli. In the local condition, subjects were asked to focus their attention on the small forms and to ignore the large form, whereas they were instructed to do the reverse in the global condition. The results showed that, in the local condition, the patients with right temporal-lobe lesions were less affected t

Effects of inert gas narcosis on behavior--a critical review.

The effects of inert gas narcosis on behavior before unconsciousness are reviewed with particular attention to four issues. The first is whether the qualitative behavioral effects of all inert gases are identical. Evidence is limited but does not contradict an affirmative answer. This is consistent with the unitary hypothesis of narcosis at the physicochemical level. The second issue concerns the relative merits of four approaches to narcosis; (a) the descriptive model, (b) the hierarchical organization hypothesis, (c) the operant paradigm, and (d) the slowed processing model. It is concluded

Effects of rearing kittens with convergent strabismus on development of receptive-field properties in striate cortex neurons.

Convergent strabismus was induced surgically in seven kittens at 3 wk of age. Recordings were made in 131 cells in the striate cortex of these strabismic kittens after maturation, and the results were compared to the data obtained from 140 striate neurons in normally reared cats. All our samples had receptive fields (RFs) within 5 degrees of the area centralis. The spatial and temporal response properties were quantitatively analyzed by using drifting sinusoidal gratings of various contrasts as well as spatial and temporal frequencies. In contrast to other reports, the receptive-field properti

Behavioral Determinants of Physical Activity Among Secondary School Students Aged 14-15 Years in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: There is little known about physical activity (PA) behaviors and its determinants in Cambodian adolescents, particularly with regard to the home and school settings. Therefore, we aimed to investigate these behaviors and determinants on their PA. METHODS: The samples collected were from 168 high school students, aged 14-15 years. They were requested to complete the self-report PA questionnaire. Time spent in PA during weekday and weekend by school location and gender, and determinants on PA were analyzed. Differences in the mean values of the PA levels (in minutes) during weekday

Binocular facilitation of cone-specific visual evoked potentials in colour deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Neural compensatory mechanisms have been proposed, which preserve the binocular visual field in glaucoma, as well as cognition in Alzheimer's disease and motor function in Parkinson's disease. It is conceivable that comparable mechanisms operate to preserve function in congenital and/or dystrophic disease. In hereditary colour vision deficiency (CVD), we observed significant facilitation in the amplitude of the binocular cone-specific visual evoked potential (VEP) compared to the monocular amplitude for the cone type corresponding to the CVD. We propose that this finding may reflec

A cross-sectional study of the event-related potential of tactile stimulus recognition and brain activity in individuals with early- and late-onset visual impairment.

People with visual impairment (VI) may have improved tactile recognition skills due to enhanced cognitive processing. However, whether this enhancement varies depending on whether VI is acquired early or late is unclear. This study aimed to determine the differences in behavioral performance during tactile stimulus detection and P300 wave latency between three groups: early-onset VI group (EVI), late-onset VI group (LVI), and sighted control group (CG). Brain cortical activity was also analyzed. Participants' hands were passively stimulated with a vibrotactile device, and participants were ask

Development of a novel rodent rapid serial visual presentation task reveals dissociable effects of stimulant versus nonstimulant treatments on attentional processes.

The rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task and continuous performance tasks (CPT) are used to assess attentional impairments in patients with psychiatric and neurological conditions. This study developed a novel touchscreen task for rats based on the structure of a human RSVP task and used pharmacological manipulations to investigate their effects on different performance measures. Normal animals were trained to respond to a target image and withhold responding to distractor images presented within a continuous sequence. In a second version of the task, a false-alarm image was included,

Long-term experience with biohybrid cochlear implants in human neurosensory restoration.

OBJECTIVE: The implantation of biohybrid electrodes was introduced a few years ago in our clinic. These electrodes coated with autologous mononuclear cells releasing anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective factors are thought to reduce insertion trauma and maintain the vitality of surviving spiral ganglion neurons. The clinical feasibility of this approach has already been demonstrated. In the present retrospective study, the four-year results of the two sides (classical electrode and biohybrid electrode) in the bilaterally implanted patients were compared in order to investigate possible advers

Effect of neural adaptation and degeneration on pulse-train ECAPs: A model study.

Electrically evoked compound action potentials (eCAPs) are measurements of the auditory nerve's response to electrical stimulation. ECAP amplitudes during pulse trains can exhibit temporal alternations. The magnitude of this alternation tends to diminish over time during the stimulus. How this pattern relates to the temporal behavior of nerve fibers is not known. We hypothesized that the stochasticity, refractoriness, adaptation of the threshold and spike-times influence pulse-train eCAP responses. Thirty thousand auditory nerve fibers were modeled in a three-dimensional cochlear model incorpo

TMS of the occipital face area modulates cross-domain identity priming.

Accumulating evidence suggests that besides its function in early facial feature processing, the role of the right occipital face area (rOFA) extends to higher level, image-independent processing. Recent studies hint at the possibility that the activity of this region can be modulated by semantic information as well. To test whether the OFA is sensitive to semantic information in a functionally relevant way, we implemented a cross-domain, name-face priming paradigm combined with state-dependent transcranial magnetic stimulation, whereby stimulation preferentially facilitates the processing of

Response inhibition or evaluation of danger? An event-related potential study regarding the origin of the motor interference effect from dangerous objects.

Previous studies have identified an interference effect from dangerous objects on prepared responses. However, its origin remains arguable. This study investigated the neural processes of this motor interference effect. The design adopted a motor priming paradigm mixed with a Go/NoGo task. Pictures of a left or right hand were used as primes, and green (Go signal) or red (NoGo signal) circles superimposed on dangerous or safe objects were used as targets. Participants were instructed to prepare the corresponding key press using the hand that was consistent with the handedness of the prime and

Dilatation of the cervix at non-labour caesarean section: Does it improve the patients' perception of pain post-operatively?

Our aim was to determine the effect of cervical dilatation at non-labour caesarean section on post-operative pain and maternal morbidity. This prospective, randomised, single-blinded trial was conducted from March 2013 to February 2014. In all, 199 patients were enrolled in the study: 102 in non-dilated group and 97 in cervical dilatation group. Based on Visual Analogue Scale, there were no significant differences between the two groups on post-operative 8th, 24th and 48th hour pain scores. We observed thinner endometrial cavity thickness, shorter operation time and shorter hospitalisation dur

Reduced GABAergic inhibition and abnormal sensory symptoms in children with Tourette syndrome.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is characterized by the presence of chronic tics. Individuals with TS often report difficulty with ignoring (habituating to) tactile sensations, and some patients perceive that this contributes to a "premonitory urge" to tic. While common, the physiological basis of impaired tactile processing in TS, and indeed tics themselves, remain poorly understood. It has been well established that GABAergic processing plays an important role in shaping the neurophysiological response to tactile stimulation. Furthermore, there are multiple lines of evidence suggesting that a deficit
