[Hypertensive crisis in children and adolescents].

Hypertensive crisis is a sudden rise in blood pressure above 99 c. for sex, age and height +5 mm Hg. Depending on patient's symptoms, hypertensive crisis can be divided into hypertensive emergency severe arterial hypertension with target organ insufficiency and/r damage (central nervous system, heart, kidney, eye), and hypertensive urgency - severe arterial hypertension without target organ insufficiency and damage with non-specific symptoms like: headaches, vertigo, nasal bleeding, nausea, and vomiting. The most common causes of hypertensive crisis in neonates and infants are renal artery thr…

The relationship between vasomotor symptoms and menopause-associated dizziness.

CONCLUSION: Vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and especially hot flushes are negatively associated with recovery from menopause-related dizziness. A … re followed up until dizziness improved. RESULTS: Over a 2-month period, the rate of recovery from vertigo was significantly higher in patients without VMS (no-VMS group, n = 38) than in those with VMS (VMS group, n = 29). In the VMS group, patients treated with HRT (n = 7) recovered from dizziness more quickly than those who were not treated with HRT (n …

Parietal lobe epilepsy.

Patients with parietal lobe epilepsy (PLE) exhibit an electroclinical epilepsy syndrome that is rarely seen even at large epilepsy centers. Clinically, most patients with PLE exhibit a somatosensory aura that may include painful dysesthesias, though vertigo, aphasia, disturbances of one's body image also occur, when ictal propagation occurs from the parietal lobe to the supplementary motor area, hypermotor manifestations are noted. When temporolimbic propagation occurs, complex visual or auditory hallucinations and automatisms may appear. Scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) is often nonlocalizing…

Primary Rathke's cleft cyst in the cerebellopontine angle associated with apoplexy.

Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC) is a congenital, benign, epithelial tumor and mainly occurs in sellar region and occasionally in suprasellar region; ectopic RCC is exceedingly rare. We report an uncommon RCC in cerebellopontine angle (CPA) associated with RCC apoplexy and investigated the possible hypothesis of its origin. A 12-year-old female student was admitted to hospital for 3-month history of vertigo, headache, nausea, and vomiting and aggravated for 1 week. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a space-occupying lesion with short T1 and long T2 signals in the left CPA and an intracystic f…

Analysis of causes for late presentation of Indian patients with vestibular schwannoma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the causes of delay in diagnosis and treatment of Indian patients with vestibular schwannomas. METHODS: In a prospective study from 2003 to 2005, 50 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of vestibular schwannoma were interviewed to determine the causes for (1) the delay between the patient noting the initial symptom and the definitive diagnosis, and (2) the reasons for delayed diagnosis. RESULTS: In 90 per cent of patients, the initial symptom was either hearing loss (62 per cent), vertigo (24 per cent) or tinnitus (4 per cent). However, most patients had been diagnosed…

Rosai-Dorfman disease with dural sinus invasion. Report of two cases.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is an idiopathic proliferation of histiocytes that affects the lymph nodes. Central nervous system involvement in the absence of nodal disease is extremely rare. On neuroimaging studies, intracranial RDD appears as solitary or multiple well-circumscribed, dura-based lesions. The authors report on two cases of RDD with locally aggressive features including dural sinus invasion, which to their knowledge has never before been described. A 60-year-old woman presented with progressive dizziness and vertigo that had lasted for 1 week. Cranial computerized tomography and m…
