Early Prediction of Parkinson's Disease Progression by Integrating Research Cohort and Real-World Data Using Knowledge-Anchored Graph Learning.

Parkinson's disease (PD) progression is highly heterogeneous. Deeply phenotyped longitudinal research cohorts have enabled characterization of PD progression trajectories. Early prediction of these progression patterns can help us better understand patient disease conditions and manage appropriately. However, the sample sizes of these cohorts are typically too small to build robust early predictors, and usually it is challenging to translate them to real-world patients because of the differences in the population as well as the information availability. In this paper we present MedStitcher, a

Challenges and strategies in dental care for patients with intellectual disabilities in Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Providing adequate dental care and implementing preventive strategies for patients with intellectual disabilities (ID) pose significant challenges in Hungary, where approximately 100,000 individuals with ID require specialized dental care. This study aimed to objectively assess the dental and periodontal care needs of patients with ID in comparison to the general population and those with physical disabilities. Additionally, we developed and evaluated a program focusing on acute treatment and the prevention of dental diseases. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted over a

Minimally-invasive manipulation of spared and hypoactive interneurons reduces CA1 synchronization and nonspatial behavior alterations in epilepsy models.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is associated with seizures and severe cognitive impairments, including memory deficits. The dysfunction of a large population of hippocampal interneurons, composed of various subtypes, is proposed as a key mechanism and a therapeutic target. However, the nature and extent of alterations in hippocampal inhibitory neurons remain unclear, as does their impact on TLE pathology. To address this issue, we combined immunolabeling, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, chemogenetic tools, and behavioral assays in mouse pilocarpine TLE models to investigate the survival and

Pharmacokinetic variability and significance of therapeutic drug monitoring for broad-spectrum antimicrobials in critically ill patients.

Critically ill patients are susceptible to serious infections due to their compromised conditions and extensive use of medical devices, often requiring empiric broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy. Failure of antimicrobial therapy in this vulnerable population has a direct impact on the patient's survival; hence, selecting the optimal dosage is critical. This population, however, exhibits complex and diverse disease-related physiological changes that can markedly alter antimicrobial disposition. Inflammatory cytokines overexpressed in the systemic inflammatory response syndrome increase vascul

Tuberculosis and Impact of COVID-19 on Spread of Epidemics in Kazakhstan.

This study examines the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis (TB) in the regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan over the past seven years (2018-2024), which cover the before-, during- and after-COVID-19 periods, with a focus on the risks of its emergence and spread. The analysis revealed that while TB incidence is declining, mortality remains high in the before- and during-COVID-19 periods, indicating a general decline in population health. The concentration of TB incidence in relation to geographic location was mainly in the northern, western and southern regions. Before COVID-19, TB inci

Demographic distribution of tuberculosis cases in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: An observational study (2014-2021).

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading infectious causes of death globally, primarily affecting the lungs and presenting as either active disease or latent infection. Saudi Arabia is considered a low-incidence country, with a reported TB incidence of 8.4 new cases per 100,000 population in 2023. This observational study aimed to assess local epidemiological trends by analyzing the demographic distribution of TB cases in the Riyadh region from 2014 to 2021. METHODS: Descriptive statistics and inferential analyses, including stratified incidence rates and multivariable regress

Exploring risk factors for depression: a network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a frequent psychological problem in the general population. There are no single conclusive causes for its development; on the contrary, it arises from the interaction of other emotional disorders. Determining risk factors is a primary objective to identify vulnerable individuals and optimize prevention. OBJECTIVE: To analyze risk factors of the depression through network analysis in Peruvian adults from the general population. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. A total of 567 Peruvian adults who answered several instruments assessing depr

Evaluating the Impact of Motivational Enhancement Therapy on Tobacco Cessation in Schizophrenia: A Comprehensive Review.

Tobacco use is markedly prevalent among individuals with schizophrenia, presenting significant challenges to their physical health and psychiatric treatment. This comprehensive review evaluates the impact of motivational enhancement therapy (MET) on tobacco cessation in this population. Schizophrenia, a chronic mental disorder characterized by symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations, is frequently accompanied by high rates of smoking, which exacerbates health risks and complicates treatment regimens. MET, a client-centered approach rooted in motivational interviewing, aims to enhance int

Vaccination Rates and Influencing Factors in Patients with Axial Spondyloarthritis and Immunosuppressive Treatment-A Survey-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) who receive immunosuppressive therapy are at risk of infection due to impaired immune function and immunosuppressive medication. Vaccination plays a crucial role in preventing infections in this population. However, vaccination rates and factors influencing vaccination uptake in axSpA patients still need to be adequately studied. This study was designed to determine the vaccination rates of vaccines covered by health insurance in this particular group in Turkey and attitudes towards vaccines and infections. This survey included 199 patients with ax

Explaining and predicting the increased thorax injury in aged females: age and subject-specific thorax geometry coupled with improved bone constitutive models and age-specific material properties evaluated in side impact conditions.

Predicting and understanding thorax injury is fundamental for the assessment and development of safety systems to mitigate injury risk to the increasing and vulnerable aged population. While computational human models have contributed to the understanding of injury biomechanics, contemporary human body models have struggled to predict rib fractures and explain the increased incidence of injury in the aged population. The present study enhanced young and aged human body models (HBMs) by integrating a biofidelic cortical bone constitutive model and population-based bone material properties. The

Symptomatology and Relationship Between Symptoms and Duration Among COVID-19 Patients in a COVID-19 Care Hospital in Central India.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world population across the globe. India has the second largest number of cases and the third largest number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the world. There have been close to 4.4 lakh deaths due to COVID-19 in India alone. The second wave in India has led to devastating consequences, particularly among the young population. The initial clinical symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to all types of viral pneumonia, with varying degrees of severity. The cases' clinical manifestations include fever, nonproductive cough, dyspnea, myalgia, and fatigue. This study wa

HIV epidemic amidst COVID-19 pandemic in India: a conundrum for the country's healthcare system.

India has the third-largest burden of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the world. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has only exposed the cracks in the Indian healthcare infrastructure concerning HIV. The prevalence of HIV in India is more among the destitute or sections of society shrouded by years of social stigma such as prostitutes, truck drivers, transsexuals and intravenous drug users. National AIDS Control Organisation and The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) organisation have many several efforts over the years to set up counselling and t

Impact of urinary incontinence on physical performance and quality of life (QOL) amongst a group of elderly in Cairo.

OBJECTIVES: Urinary incontinence (UI), involuntary loss of urine, is a common disorder affecting the elderly population worldwide. UI can be associated with poor quality of life (QOL) in this vulnerable population, as it limits both physical and social activities of daily living (ADLs). Additionally, it has a psychological and economic burden on individuals, healthcare services and society. This study was conducted to measure the frequency of UI amongst the elderly and determine its impact on the overall QOL, physical performance, and ADLs. Gene Deletion and Sleep Depletion: Exploring the Relationship Between Sleep and Affect in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a microdeletion on the long arm of chromosome 22. Sleep problems have been reported in this population, and psychiatric disorders and affect dysregulation are common to the behavioral phenotype of 22q11DS. Sleep and affect have been consistently linked across multiple studies, yet despite this very little research has investigated sleep problems in 22q11DS, or the link between sleep and affect in this population. The Experience Sampling Method was used to track daily reports of sleep quality and affect in a total of

Venovenous Extracorporeal Life Support in Single-Ventricle Patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

There is new and growing experience with venovenous extracorporeal life support (VV ECLS) for neonatal and pediatric patients with single-ventricle physiology and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Outcomes in this population have been defined but could be improved; survival rates in single-ventricle patients on VV ECLS for respiratory failure are slightly higher than those in single-ventricle patients on venoarterial ECLS for cardiac failure (48 vs. 32-43%), but are lower than in patients with biventricular anatomy (58-74%). To that end, special consideration is necessary for patient
