Arrhythmias in newborn thoroughbred foals.

Foetal electrocardiograms (ECG) were obtained from 39 of 50 Thoroughbred foaling mares close to delivery. The 50 newborn foals were studied electrocardiographically during their adaptive period, immediately after birth. In 48 foals there were paroxysmal arrhythmias or mixed arrhythmias. The most common arrhythmias were sinus arrhythmias including wandering pacemaker (32/50) and atrial premature contraction (30/50). The others observed were atrial fibrillation (15/50), ventricular premature contraction (10/50), partial atrioventricular block (7/50), ventricular tachycardia (4/50), atrial tachyc

Associations between the quality of family interactions during a mother-father-adolescent conflict discussion task and physiological emotion regulation in adolescents.

Emotion regulation (ER) is a key competence in adolescence that is related to multiple psychological outcomes, including adaptive functioning and psychopathological symptoms. The development of ER skills is closely associated with a child's family relational context. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the physiological ER of adolescents during family interactions that go beyond the mother-adolescent dyad. Thus, little is understood regarding which features of communication in the mother-father-adolescent triad (e.g., warmth of affective exchanges) are relevant to adolescents' physiolo

Metabolic Regulation, Oxygen Limitation and Heat Tolerance in a Subtidal Marine Gastropod Reveal the Complexity of Predicting Climate Change Vulnerability.

Predictions for climate vulnerability of ectotherms have focused on performance-enhancing physiology, even though an organism's energetic state can also be balanced by lowering resting maintenance costs. Adaptive metabolic depression (hypometabolism) enables animals to endure food scarcity, and physically extreme and variable environmental conditions. Hypometabolism is common in terrestrial and intertidal marine gastropod species, though this physiology and tolerance of environmental change are poorly understood in subtidal benthic gastropods. We investigated oxygen limitation tolerance, hypom

Individual factors as predictors of secondary traumatic stress and burnout in forensic inpatient staff.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT: Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is the indirect traumatisation of a person through the stress of helping or knowing about other's trauma. Burnout is gradual exhaustion in response to long-term work-related stress. Both have negative psychological, physiological and/or organisational consequences; however, the existing research in forensic health care professionals (FHCPs) is limited. One study explored STS in FCHPs and found that lower psychological flexibility (ability to adapt) was a predictor of greater STS. Existing research on burnout in FHCPs suggests that

Adaptive multichannel FES neuroprosthesis with learning control and automatic gait assessment.

BACKGROUND: FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) neuroprostheses have long been a permanent feature in the rehabilitation and gait support of people who had a stroke or have a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Over time the well-known foot switch triggered drop foot neuroprosthesis, was extended to a multichannel full-leg support neuroprosthesis enabling improved support and rehabilitation. However, these neuroprostheses had to be manually tuned and could not adapt to the persons' individual needs. In recent research, a learning controller was added to the drop foot neuroprosthesis, so that the ful

Surgery as Metabolic Therapy: Expanding the Role of Gastrointestinal Surgery Beyond Anatomical Reconstruction.

Gastrointestinal surgery comprises procedures used to treat diseases and injuries of the digestive tract. Evidence now shows that some gastrointestinal procedures are also systemic metabolic interventions. Bariatric and metabolic surgery intentionally treats obesity and associated metabolic disease and can improve type 2 diabetes, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, and cardiometabolic risk, sometimes before substantial weight loss occurs. Other procedures, including hepatectomy, pancreatic resection, and bowel resection, are generally performed for non-metabolic indicati

The contribution of circadian, sleep and hormonal rhythms to pregnancy outcomes: an opportunity for improved management of women during pregnancy.

Circadian rhythms are fundamental regulators of physiology and play a critical role in reproductive success. During pregnancy, precise temporal coordination of endocrine, metabolic, and immune processes is required to support maternal adaptation, placental function, and foetal development. Disruption of circadian rhythms through environmental factors such as light at night, shift work, or sleep disorders has emerged as a significant risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia. In this review, we synthesize current evidence linking

Bioinspired heliconical auxetic biofibers for intelligent biomechanical surveillance.

Wearable bio-based fibers are emerging as platforms for biomechanical sensing and physiological interaction. However, achieving high sensitivity to subtle mechanical cues while maintaining flexibility, self-powered output, and distributed perception remains challenging. Inspired by the helical twining mechanics of climbing plant stems, we design a mechano-adaptive auxetic electronic bio-based fiber as an embodied intelligence sensing unit. The dual-modulus helical confinement, achieved by wrapping rigid aramid fiber/polydimethylsiloxane helices around a flexible collagen aggregate/waterborne p

Individual baseline differences outweigh personal traits in short-term heat acclimation adaptations.

Previous studies found individual variations during long-term heat acclimation, for short-term heat acclimation (STHA), this remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the impact of individual characteristics on thermophysiological adaptations during STHA. Forty-six service members participated in an STHA protocol in 35.1 ± 0.4 °C and 50 ± 4% RH. Gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi), mean skin temperature (Tsk), heart rate (HR), whole-body sweat loss, and subjective scores were recorded and analysed using mixed-effect modelling. Both end-of and change-during fixed work-rate Tgi, Tsk, and HR sh

Metabolic-immune axis in pregnancy: Implications for women with autoimmune diseases.

A healthy pregnancy involves a series of physiological adaptations in both the immune and metabolic systems, which interact closely through the "metabolism-immune axis." Metabolic remodeling during pregnancy dynamically modulates immune cell functions, thereby promoting maternal tolerance to the semi allogeneic embryo. This adaptive crosstalk within the metabolism-immune axis is important for maternal health and fetal development throughout gestation and the perinatal period. However, in autoimmune diseases (AID) such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), t

Non-aversive handling in laboratory animals and its effects on depressive-like and anxiety-related behaviors: A scoping review.

Stress is an adaptive response to environmental demands, but increased intensity and frequency can lead to impaired adaptive functions. Stress is considered a risk factor for Major Depressive Disorder, a multifactorial disorder that often coexists with anxiety. Picking up laboratory mice by the tail is the most common method for animal capture and may create background stress. Non-aversive handling (NAH) includes capturing the animal with the help of a tunnel or by capturing the animal with cupped hands. Given the importance of stress-induced models in the investigation of depressive-like and

Hypothalamic neural circuits regulating energy expenditure.

The hypothalamus plays a central role in regulating energy expenditure and maintaining energy homeostasis, crucial for an organism's survival. Located in the ventral diencephalon, it is a dynamic and adaptable brain region capable of rapid responses to environmental changes, exhibiting high anatomical and cellular plasticity and integrates a myriad of sensory information, internal physiological cues, and humoral factors to accurately interpret the nutritional state and adjust food intake, thermogenesis, and energy homeostasis. Key hypothalamic nuclei contain distinct neuron populations that re

Altered serine metabolism promotes drug tolerance in Mycobacterium abscessus via a WhiB7-mediated adaptive stress response.

Mycobacterium abscessus is an emerging opportunistic pathogen responsible for chronic lung diseases, especially in patients with cystic fibrosis. Treatment failure of M. abscessus infections is primarily associated with intrinsic or acquired antibiotic resistance. However, there is growing evidence that antibiotic tolerance, i.e., the ability of bacteria to transiently survive exposure to bactericidal antibiotics through physiological adaptations, contributes to the relapse of chronic infections and the emergence of acquired drug resistance. Yet, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms t

Astrocytes as master modulators of neural networks: Synaptic functions and disease-associated dysfunction of astrocytes.

Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cell type in the central nervous system and are essential to the development, plasticity, and maintenance of neural circuits. Astrocytes are heterogeneous, with their diversity rooted in developmental programs modulated by the local brain environment. Astrocytes play integral roles in regulating and coordinating neural activity extending far beyond their metabolic support of neurons and other brain cell phenotypes. Both gray and white matter astrocytes occupy critical functional niches capable of modulating brain physiology on time scales slower than syna

Considering the Role of Extracellular Matrix Molecules, in Particular Reelin, in Granule Cell Dispersion Related to Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) of the nervous system can be considered as a dynamically adaptable compartment between neuronal cells, in particular neurons and glial cells, that participates in physiological functions of the nervous system. It is mainly composed of carbohydrates and proteins that are secreted by the different kinds of cell types found in the nervous system, in particular neurons and glial cells, but also other cell types, such as pericytes of capillaries, ependymocytes and meningeal cells. ECM molecules participate in developmental processes, synaptic plasticity, neurodegenera

A systematic review of local field potential physiomarkers in Parkinson's disease: from clinical correlations to adaptive deep brain stimulation algorithms.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment has proven effective in suppressing symptoms of rigidity, bradykinesia, and tremor in Parkinson's disease. Still, patients may suffer from disabling fluctuations in motor and non-motor symptom severity during the day. Conventional DBS treatment consists of continuous stimulation but can potentially be further optimised by adapting stimulation settings to the presence or absence of symptoms through closed-loop control. This critically relies on the use of 'physiomarkers' extracted from (neuro)physiological signals. Ideal physiomarkers for adaptive DBS (aDB

Gaseous NO2 induces various envelope alterations in Pseudomonas fluorescens MFAF76a.

Anthropogenic atmospheric pollution and immune response regularly expose bacteria to toxic nitrogen oxides such as NO• and NO2. These reactive molecules can damage a wide variety of biomolecules such as DNA, proteins and lipids. Several components of the bacterial envelope are susceptible to be damaged by reactive nitrogen species. Furthermore, the hydrophobic core of the membranes favors the reactivity of nitrogen oxides with other molecules, making membranes an important factor in the chemistry of nitrosative stress. Since bacteria are often exposed to endogenous or exogenous nitrogen oxides

Early socialization and environmental enrichment of lactating piglets affects the caecal microbiota and metabolomic response after weaning.

The aim of this study was to determine the possible impact of early socialization and an enriched neonatal environment to improve adaptation of piglets to weaning. We hypothesized that changes in the microbiota colonization process and in their metabolic response and intestinal functionality could help the animals face weaning stress. A total of 48 sows and their litters were allotted into a control (CTR) or an enriched treatment (ENR), in which piglets from two adjacent pens were combined and enriched with toys. The pattern of caecal microbial colonization, the jejunal gene expression, the se

The Potential Role of Protein Kinase R as a Regulator of Age-Related Neurodegeneration.

There is a growing evidence describing a decline in adaptive homeostasis in aging-related diseases affecting the central nervous system (CNS), many of which are characterized by the appearance of non-native protein aggregates. One signaling pathway that allows cell adaptation is the integrated stress response (ISR), which senses stress stimuli through four kinases. ISR activation promotes translational arrest through the phosphorylation of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha (eIF2α) and the induction of a gene expression program to restore cellular homeostasis. However, depend
