Topical steroids versus systemic antifungals in the treatment of chronic paronychia: an open, randomized double-blind and double dummy study.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of Candida in the pathogenesis of chronic paronychia (CP) has never been proven, even though this condition is commonly considered a type of Candida onychomycosis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of systemic antifungals (itraconazole or terbinafine) with a topical corticosteroid (methylprednisolone aceponate) in the treatment of patients with CP. METHODS: The study involved 45 adult patients with CP. Medication was given in a randomized, double-blind and double dummy manner over 3 weeks. Patients were then followed for 6 weeks. Cli

The WHO Institutional Repository for Information Sharing-African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control Collection: an electronic resource of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme and African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control experience and data to inform onchocerciasis elimination strategies.

BACKGROUND: As countries progress from control of onchocerciasis as a public health problem to elimination of parasite transmission, more evidence on vector-related activities and transmission assessments is needed to inform WHO guidelines and country strategies to achieve the targets of the 2030 Neglected Tropical Disease Roadmap. For vector-borne diseases, entomology plays a critical role in the elimination and verification of transmission based on vector infectivity. The vector control-based Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in West Africa, 1974-2002, had accumulated relevant experienc

When life is an itch: What harms, helps, and heals from the patients' perspective? Differences and similarities among skin diseases.

Itch is the commonest skin-related symptom, associated with a high psychosocial and economic burden. While the main focus of itch research lies on a few chronic skin diseases, only little is known about the perception of itch, itch-aggravating/-relieving factors and treatment preferences in patients with acute and chronic itch of various etiology. In this cross-sectional study, we assessed these aspects in 126 patients (mean age 61.7 ± 18.4 years, 67 females, median itch duration 3.9 years) using a 78-item questionnaire. The diseases were categorized into 11 diagnostic groups for descriptive a

(R)-(+)-pulegone suppresses allergic and inflammation responses on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene-induced atopic dermatitis in mice model.

BACKGROUND: (R)-(+)-pulegone (PLG), a biotransformation of monoterpene ketones, is one of essential oils of Labiatae family. Although PLG was reported to have anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine effects, the therapeutic effects of PLG on atopic dermatitis (AD) have not been reported yet. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the anti-AD effects and underlying mechanisms of PLG in AD-induced mice. METHODS: BALB/c male mice were challenged with 2, 4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB, 1%) to induce AD. After 4 days of rest, PLG (0.1, 1 and 10 μM) were topically applied to dorsal skin for 2 weeks with se

Characterization of the antihyperalgesic action of a novel peripheral mu-opioid receptor agonist--loperamide.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical and clinical evidence indicates that locally administered opioid agonists produce an antihyperalgesic effect through peripheral opioid receptors in inflamed tissue. Loperamide, a mu opioid agonist, does not cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore lacks central effects after systemic administration. The authors defined the effects of topical loperamide on a thermal injury-induced hyperalgesia. METHODS: In halothane-anesthetized rats, thermal injury was induced by placing the plantar surface of a hindpaw on a hot plate (52.0+/-1 degrees C) for 45 s. Loperamide was pr

The association between mortality and door-to-antibiotic time: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Previous studies evaluating the impact of antibiotic timing on mortality in sepsis have shown conflicting results. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between door-to-antibiotic time (each hour of delay) and mortality in sepsis. METHODS: We searched PubMed and Embase through 10 November 2022 to identity cohort studies that evaluated the adjusted association between door-to-antibiotic time (each hour of delay) and mortality in adult patients with sepsis. The primary outcome was mortality. Analysis was based on inverse-variance weighting using a fixed-effects model
