Affect Variability in Relation to Alcohol Use Frequency, Intensity, and Concurrent Cannabis Use Among College Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Although alcohol use is related to daily affect, findings regarding affect variability-the degree to which individuals exhibit day-to-day fluctuations in affect-and alcohol use have been mixed. The present study assessed whether individuals who use alcohol tend to have higher positive and negative affect variability than individuals who do not, as well as whether higher affect variability is related to more frequent and intense alcohol use among individuals who use alcohol. We also explored whether affect variability differed between individuals who use alcohol and those who concurrently use a

The effect of alcohol intake on the disposition of diphenhydramine in man.

The disposition of diphenhydramine (DPHA) and its principal metabolites was investigated in two subjects after i.v. and oral dosing. Based on these parameters the results of a multiple oral dose regimen were predicted and compared to the results obtained in these volunteers. During one dose interval of the multiple oral dose regimen, the volunteers indulged in social drinking. Comparison of this interval with a control period showed no differences in disposition. Alcohol therefore, would appear to have no effect on the disposition of DPHA.

Utilization of biomarkers for alcohol use in candidates for liver transplantation with alcohol-associated liver disease.

Although a set period of abstinence is no longer a requirement for transplant consideration in many liver transplantation programs, it is imperative to use valid monitoring tools to detect ongoing alcohol use in candidates for transplant. Urinary ethyl glucuronide (EtG) is an objective measure of alcohol use. This single-center retrospective study aims to describe the psychosocial characteristics of patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) who provided positive EtG tests in the pretransplant phase. Data were collected between May 1, 2018, and November 30, 2021, for all patients wit

Pervasive, hard-wired and male: Qualitative study of how UK adolescents view alcohol-related aggression.

Laboratory studies of alcohol-inexperienced adolescents show that aggression can be primed by alcohol-related stimuli, suggesting that alcohol-related aggression is partly socially learned. Script theory proposes that alcohol-related aggression 'scripts' for social behaviors are culturally-available and learned by individuals. The purpose of the study was to understand the content and origins of alcohol-related aggression scripts learned by adolescents. This qualitative focus group study of 40 adolescents (ages 14-16 years) examined alcohol-related aggression scripts. Participants believed agg

Epidemiology and factors associated with amoebic liver abscess in northern Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Clinically diagnosed amoebic liver abscess (ALA) caused by Entamoeba histolytica has been an important public health problem in Jaffna district, northern Sri Lanka for last three decades. In order to draw up a control strategy for elimination of this condition, knowledge of its epidemiology and factors associated with this condition in the local context is vital. METHODS: All clinically diagnosed ALA patients admitted to the Teaching Hospital, Jaffna during the study period were included in the study and the data were collected using an interviewer administered questionnaire. A Hematological Travesty in the Setting of Alcohol Use Disorder and Liver Cirrhosis.

Excessive ethanol consumption is associated with an increased risk of developing health complications, especially in individuals with pre-existing thrombocytopenia and cirrhosis. Here, we describe a case of a patient with a history of alcoholic cirrhosis, hypertension, and thrombocytopenia, presenting with significant decline following an incidence of binge drinking. Radiography identified a large non-lobar intraparenchymal hemorrhage. However, due to severe thrombocytopenia that was unresponsive to platelet therapy, the possibility of pursuing any form of surgical intervention was negated. Su

Utility of smart watch in expediting diagnosis of cold drink-triggered atrial fibrillation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting to the emergency department with recent palpitations are a diagnostic challenge when the arrhythmia and its symptoms have resolved prior to arrival. Newer smart watch technology, adept at detecting atrial fibrillation, can assist in the diagnostic evaluation of transitory palpitations. We report a case of cold drink-triggered atrial fibrillation whose diagnosis would not have been possible without the assistance of the patient's smart watch. CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-aged man without cardiac history developed sudden rapid, irregular palpitations with shortnes

[National survey of alcoholic liver disease in Japan].

BACKGROUND: Recently, the incidence of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) has been increasing in Japan in association with increased alcoholic beverage consumption. The objectives of this study were 1) to investigate the incidence of ALD in Japan from 1998 to 2002, and 2) to determine whether hepatitis virus affects its prevalence. METHODS: A nation-wide survey of hospitals qualified by the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology was conducted to determine the status of ALD in-patients since 1998. The prevalence of hepatitis virus infection in each kind of ALD patient was also investigated. RESULTS:

Chronic alcoholism in the absence of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and cirrhosis does not result in the loss of serotonergic neurons from the median raphe nucleus.

Previous studies have identified alcohol, thiamine deficiency and liver disease as contributing to the neuropathology of alcohol-related brain damage. In order to examine the effects of alcohol toxicity and thiamine deficiency on serotonergic neurons in the median raphe nucleus (MnR), alcoholic and previously published Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) cases without liver disease, were compared with age-matched non-alcoholic controls. While there was no difference between the estimated number of serotonergic neurons in either controls or alcoholics without WKS (means of 63,010 +/- 8,900 and 59

Early-onset alcoholics have lower cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels than late-onset alcoholics.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the interrelationships of age at onset of excessive alcohol consumption, family history of alcoholism, psychiatric comorbidity, and cerebrospinal fluid monoamine metabolite concentrations in abstinent, treatment-seeking alcoholics. METHODS: We studied 131 recently abstinent alcoholics. Supervised abstinence was maintained on a research ward at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center for a minimum of 3 weeks. All alcoholics received a low-monoamine diet for a minimum of 3 days before lumbar puncture. Lumbar punctures were performed in the morning after an

Opioid antagonists for pharmacological treatment of alcohol dependence - a critical review.

Alcohol dependence is a widespread psychiatric disorder. While relapse prevention therapy in alcoholism was exclusively dominated by social and psychological treatments for many years, in the last decades the benefits of pharmacological agents for the rehabilitation treatment in alcoholism have become increasingly evident. Naltrexone, an opiate receptor antagonist, blocks the pleasant and reinforcing effects of alcohol by preventing the stimulation of opioid receptors and the reduction of dopamine release in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Clinical evidence about the effectiveness of the sub

A survey of obstetrician-gynecologists on their patients' alcohol use during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine knowledge, attitudes, current clinical practices, and educational needs of obstetrician-gynecologists regarding patients' alcohol use during pregnancy. METHODS: A 20-item, self-administered questionnaire on patients' prenatal alcohol use was sent to 1000 active ACOG fellows. Responses were analyzed using univariate and multivariate statistical techniques. RESULTS: Of the 60% of the obstetrician-gynecologists who responded to the survey, 97% reported asking their pregnant patients about alcohol use. When a patient reports alcohol use, most respondents reported that they

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: Zebrafish in the analysis of the milder and more prevalent form of the disease.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) represent a large unmet medical need. Exposure of the developing human embryo to alcohol can lead to life-long suffering. Despite the well documented deleterious effects of alcohol on the developing fetus, pregnant women continue to drink alcohol, and FASD remains the leading cause of preventable mental retardation and other behavioral abnormalities. Particularly prevalent are the milder forms of the disease cluster, representing children who do not show obvious physical signs and who may be undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The pervading influence of alcoholic liver disease in hepatology.

Rising levels of alcohol consumption in the UK are leading to substantial increases in morbidity and mortality from liver disease. Drinking is starting at an earlier age with binging an increasing common pattern, and women are overtaking men in the consumption. Manifestations of liver damage range from fatty liver to end-stage cirrhosis, but it is the increasing number of cases presenting with an acute alcoholic hepatitis (AAH) that are the cause for greatest concern. Development of well-validated prognostic scoring systems (Maddrey Modified Discriminant Function, Glasgow Alcohol Score) makes
