Non-obscene complex socially inappropriate behavior in Tourette's syndrome.

The authors surveyed 87 adolescent or adult patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) regarding the presence, characteristics, and functional impact of non-obscene socially inappropriate (SI) behavior. Reported behaviors included insulting others (22%), other SI comments (5%), and SI actions (14%). More often, subjects described having an urge to carry out these behaviors (30%, 26%, 22%, respectively), which they often attempted to suppress. Non-obscene SI behavior was usually directed at a family member or familiar person, at home or in a familiar setting. Social difficulties commonly resulted.

Gender and social structure in the demand/withdraw pattern of marital conflict.

This study examined the effects of gender and social structure on the demand/withdraw pattern of marital conflict. In this pattern, the demander, usually the woman, pressures the other through emotional requests, criticism, and complaints, and the withdrawer, usually the man, retreats through defensiveness and passive inaction. In this study, 31 couples were assessed in 2 conflict situations: 1 in which husband wanted a change in wife and 1 in which wife wanted a change in husband. Data from husbands, wives, and observers consistently revealed a significant main effect of gender (wife-demand/h

The diagnostic value of cerebellar-vestibular tests in detecting learning disabilities, dyslexia, and attention deficit disorder.

Neurological and optokinetic measures of cerebellar-vestibular (CV) dysfunctioning were shown to be of significant diagnostic value in differentiating between learning disabled subjects and controls matched for chronological age, sex, handedness, IQ, and background (ns = 35). Although traditionally used electronystagmographic positional and caloric parameters were not similarly discriminating, quantitative measures of vertical nystagmus in various eyes-closed positions appeared to have diagnostic potential and were related significantly to such CV-determined neurological signs as positive mono

[Dubowitz syndrome: a dysmorphism syndrome with developmental delay, transitory short stature, hyperactive behavior and atopic dermatitis].

The Dubowitz-syndrome, a rare, autosomal-recessive condition, was seen in a 6-year-old female patient. Verbal, fine motor, and social development were severely retarded. Behavioral disturbances, predominantly hyperactivity were apparent. Short stature of unknown origin became evident during infancy and early childhood. Atopic dermatitis and specific sensitivity to inhalant and nutritive allergens was found. A pattern of minor anomalies included inner epicanthic folds, hypertelorism, flat nasal bridge, globular nasal tip, coarse lips, and retrogenia as well as pes planovalgus, and a sacral dimp

Hyperactive boys almost grown up. III. Methylphenidate effects on ultimate height.

The height of young adults who were treated with methylphenidate hydrochloride in childhood because of hyperactivity (average daily dose, 45 mg; duration of treatment, six months to five years) was studied. There was no significant difference in height between the treated patients (n = 61) and controls (n = 99); both groups were at the national US norm in stature. The findings indicated that methylphenidate therapy does not compromise final height, even when it has an adverse impact on children's growth rate during the active treatment phase. A compensatory growth rate, or growth rebound, appe

Precocious Puberty and Risk of Psychiatric Disorders: A Nationwide Cohort Study Using Prospective Registry Data.

CONTEXT: Early menarche within the general population has previously been linked to increased risk of mental health disorders, and such associations are likely to be even stronger in children diagnosed with extremely early puberty (precocious puberty); however, information is sparse. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the association between precocious puberty and psychiatric disorders. DESIGN: A large cohort study included individuals in the National Danish Patient Registry with a diagnosis of precocious puberty from January 1, 1995, to December 31, 2020 (n = 9315, 11% boys), comprising patients regist

Attachment Style and Family Functioning as Predictors of Trauma Symptoms in Children With ADHD After a Major Disaster.

BACKGROUND: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are vulnerable to the psychological impact of traumatic events due to inherent difficulties in emotion regulation and executive functioning. This study examines the predictive roles of attachment styles and family functioning on depressive, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in children with ADHD following the 2023 Türkiye earthquakes. METHODS: A longitudinal design was employed with 124 children diagnosed with ADHD, assessed at 3 months (T1) and 12 months (T2) after the earthquakes. Attachment s

Improving Children's Social Skills With Virtual Reality: A Tailored Single-Session Training in Special Education.

This within-child study examined whether a tailored, single-session virtual reality (VR) training can enhance social skills among children enrolled in special education programs for behavior problems. Forty-nine children (ages 7-13; 85.7% boys; 57.1% ASD, 20.4% ADHD) completed one 20-min VR session. For each child, teachers selected one skill for children to practice with: staying calm (anger regulation), asking to join a group (peer entry), or saying no (assertiveness). Relative to baseline, in-VR observations showed substantial immediate improvements of the targeted skill (η2p = .35), but te

Association of morning plasma melatonin levels with chronotype, sleep disturbance, anxiety, and depression symptoms in adolescents with ADHD.

AIMS: The primary aim of this study was to compare plasma melatonin levels, chronotypes, sleep disturbances, and symptoms of anxiety and depression between adolescents diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a healthy control group. The secondary objective was to investigate the correlation between melatonin levels and these clinical parameters within the ADHD group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample included 41 adolescents (aged 10-18 years) who were either treatment-naïve or had not received pharmacological treatment for ADHD in the past six months. Maternal Diabetes Mellitus and Child Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Rethinking Causality in Light of Environmental Pollutants.

Numerous epidemiological studies have linked maternal diabetes mellitus (DM) to neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring, such as autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, recent evidence challenges a direct causal relationship: sibling-matched analyses show similar risks regardless of gestational DM status, and glycemic control during pregnancy does not consistently predict neurodevelopmental outcomes. We propose that exposure to environmental pollutants-rather than DM itself-may underlie these associations. Although usually examined separately, many pol

Polygenic and developmental profiles of autism differ by age at diagnosis.

Although autism has historically been conceptualized as a condition that emerges in early childhood1,2, many autistic people are diagnosed later in life3-5. It is unknown whether earlier- and later-diagnosed autism have different developmental trajectories and genetic profiles. Using longitudinal data from four independent birth cohorts, we demonstrate that two different socioemotional and behavioural trajectories are associated with age at diagnosis. In independent cohorts of autistic individuals, common genetic variants account for approximately 11% of the variance in age at autism diagnosis

Antidepressant pharmacotherapy in childhood PTSD with and without comorbid ADHD: a nationwide retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are prevalent in youth, with psychotherapy as the first-line PTSD treatment and stimulants as the primary ADHD treatment. However, antidepressants are commonly prescribed to manage comorbid internalizing (depression, anxiety, and irritability) symptoms seen in patients with both disorders. Despite the high occurrence and complexity of comorbid PTSD with ADHD, little empirical data exist on antidepressant use in youth with PTSD, and particularly in youth with co-occurring externalizing disorder

[Overlap between PTSD, ADHD, and narcolepsy].

This case report describes the diagnosis of ADHD in a 29-year-old woman suffering from psychiatric and metabolic conditions and type 2 diabetes, receiving treatment for severe PTSD. She developed excessive daytime sleepiness, which, due to diagnostic overshadowing, initially was attributed to her psychiatric illness, delaying diagnosis and treatment. This jeopardized her daily life due to incidents of sudden sleep attacks and much longer sleeping times. The diagnosis of narcolepsy type 2 was given based on polysomnography, multiple sleep latency tests, and examination of the cerebrospinal flui

Validation of the Mentalization Scale (MentS) in francophone control and clinical samples.

AIMS: The Mentalization Scale (MentS) is a self-report measure for the assessment of mentalizing capacities, consisting of 28 items, yielding a three-factor structure: self-mentalizing, mentalizing others and motivation to mentalize. Its anglophone version has been validated for usage in both research and clinical contexts. The present study explores the psychometric properties of the francophone translation of the MentS, in both control and clinical samples. METHOD: A total of 711 participants were enrolled in this study. The MentS was administered to a community sample (N = 302, 161 females

Childhood and adolescence outcomes in offspring to parents with bipolar disorder: the impact of lifetime parental comorbidity, parental sex, and bipolar subtype.

BACKGROUND: Offspring of parents with bipolar disorder have increased risks of their own psychopathology. However, a large-scale survey of psychiatric, somatic, and adverse social outcomes up to adulthood, which could aid in prioritizing and tailoring prevention, is lacking. It also remains to clarify how risks are modified by other parental factors. METHODS: Swedish population registers were linked to compare offspring having (N = 24,788) and not having (N = 247,880) a parent with bipolar disorder with respect to psychiatric diagnoses and psychotropic medication, birth-related and somatic co

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet during pregnancy and behavioural problems at 4 years of age.

There is an increasing prevalence of psychological issues in childhood. Lifestyle factors during pregnancy, including maternal nutrition, have been linked to children's behavioural development. This study aims to assess the impact of adherence to the Mediterranean diet during pregnancy on the behavioural problems of children at the age of 4. A total of 231 mother-child pairs were assessed. Maternal adherence to the Mediterranean diet during pregnancy was estimated using a relative Mediterranean Diet Score (rMED). Behavioural outcomes were evaluated through the Child Behaviour Checklist 1½--5,

Do maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms predict anxiety in children with and without ADHD at 8 years?

Maternal anxiety and depression during pregnancy and early childhood have been associated with child anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, previous studies are limited by their short follow-up, few assessments of maternal symptoms, and by not including maternal and child ADHD. The present study aimed to fill these gaps by investigating whether maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms from pregnancy to child age 5 years increase the risk of child anxiety disorders at age 8 years. This study is part of the population-based Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohor

The moderating role of sex and self-, teacher-, and father-reported ADHD hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms, on the association between early adolescent internalizing symptoms and substance use.

AIMS: Internalizing symptoms are theorized to lead to substance use (SU) via a tendency to use substances to cope with or self-medicate negative feelings and emotions; however, empirically, this association is mixed, pointing to the existence of moderating factors. The present study aimed to examine how self-, teacher-, and father-reported attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms (ADHD-HI) and sex, moderated the association between self-reported internalizing symptoms and SU, in early adolescence. METHODS: Cross-sectional data obtained at 13 years of age, dr
