BACKGROUND: Gene therapy is currently being used in clinical trials to treat a variety of diseases. In keratinocyte gene therapy, the gene that will correct the disease by expressing the normal protein or enzyme is inserted and expressed in keratinocytes. Keratinocytes have significant potential, as a target cell of gene therapy, in the treatment of both systemic diseases as well as skin diseases caused by a genetic defect in keratinocytes.

Fourteen new cases of cinnamon-induced stomatitis are reported. Ten of these fourteen cases were first detected on the basis of histopathologic changes, which included hyperkeratosis, chronic lichenoid mucositis with plasmacytic infiltration, and marked chronic perivasculitis. Six cases of false-positive histopathologic findings are presented for comparison. It is recommended that when the histopathologic features described are recognized, cinnamon stomatitis should be considered.

Using the tandem scanning microscope, in vivo confocal microscopic images of living eyes were compared to images obtained from ex vivo, freshly enucleated or fixed tissue in the rabbit. Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita is an acquired subepidermal blistering disease with variable clinical, pathologic, and immunologic features. The disease has been reported infrequently in adults and only rarely in children. A patient has an acquired, scarring, bullous eruption. The severity of the cutaneous, ocular, esophageal, and laryngeal scarring was suggestive of cicatricial pemphigoid or the severely dystrophic forms of epidermolysis bullosa. Clinical features and histologic and immunofluorescence and electron microscopic study led to the diagnosis of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita. The spectrum of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita includes cases that closely approximate the severity of disease previously recognized only for the recessive form of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica.

Detailed immunopathologic studies of early or silent renal alterations in systemic lupus erythematosus have been sparse. By in vitro complement immunofluorescent staining methods, 46 serum samples from bullous pemphigoid patients with titers of antibasement-membrane-zone antibodies of 320 or greater were tested for their ability to fix C1q, C4, and C3.
