Racial disparities in the association of foetal growth retardation to childhood blood pressure.

BACKGROUND: Foetal growth retardation (FGR), defined as less than the 10th percentile of birth weight for gestational age, is reported to be an important contributor to hypertension and cardiovascular disease in children and adults, but findings are not consistent. For this reason we re-examined the role of FGR in childhood blood pressure. METHODS: We performed univariate and multivariate analyses on data gathered from 262 children, age 5 years, born to mothers at risk for pre-term delivery or FGR infant. The characteristics of the mothers and the children were evaluated using Student's t-tes

A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of sibutramine for olanzapine-associated weight gain.

OBJECTIVE: Weight gain is commonly observed with olanzapine treatment and can increase the risk for obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. This study examined the effectiveness of sibutramine, an approved weight loss agent, in overweight and obese subjects taking olanzapine for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. METHOD: Each subject had a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, had been taking a stable dose of olanzapine for at least 4 months, and had a body mass index of >/=30 kg/m(2) or >/=27 kg/m(2) plus at least one cardiovascu

Eating disorders. A review and update.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are prevalent illnesses affecting between 1% and 10% of adolescent and college age women. Developmental, family dynamic, and biologic factors are all important in the cause of this disorder. Anorexia nervosa is diagnosed when a person refuses to maintain his or her body weight over a minimal normal weight for age and height, such as 15% below that expected, has an intense fear of gaining weight, has a disturbed body image, and, in women, has primary or secondary amenorrhea. A diagnosis of bulimia nervosa is made when a person has recurrent episodes of binge…

Abnormal thymus development and impaired function of the immune system in rats after prenatal exposure to aciclovir.

Aciclovir (synonym: acyclovir) causes abnormal thymus development in rats. After treatment on day 10 of gestation a weight reduction of the organ is obvious in 21-day-old fetuses which persists postnatally. Adult male rats exposed in utero to one or three injections of 100 mg aciclovir/kg body wt given to the dam on day 10 of pregnancy showed a reduction of the thymus weight to 333 +/- 158 mg and 276 +/- 61 mg (control: 428 +/- 92 mg; n = 10). Corresponding alterations were detectable in female offspring. Liver weight was also decreased and spleen weight (in relation to body wt) was significan

Ultrasound-assessed changes in abdominal fat and subcutaneous fat over the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius after a partial meal-replacement program in adults with obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is characterized not only by excess body weight, but also by abnormal regional adipose tissue distribution, which contributes to insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome (MS). Ultrasound may provide a practical method for monitoring changes in abdominal and peripheral adipose depots during nutritional treatment. The objective of the study was to evaluate changes in ultrasound-assessed abdominal and limb subcutaneous fat depots after a partial meal-replacement (pMR) program in adults with obesity METHODS: This prospective, single-arm, before-after interventio…

Effect of a 5:2 intermittent fasting diet on obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that affects fertility and metabolism. Obesity, present in a significant proportion of PCOS patients, exacerbates insulin resistance (IR) and worsens reproductive outcomes. This study explores the effects of a 12-week 5:2 intermittent fasting diet with meal replacement (MR) on body weight, metabolic, and endocrine markers in obese women with PCOS. METHODS: A non-randomized, single-arm interventional study was conducted with 90 obese women diagnosed with PCOS. Participants were assigned to three groups: 5:2 intermitt…

Correlation of Body Mass Index with Pelvis and Lumbar Spine Alignment in Sagittal Plane in Hemophilia Patients.

Introduction: Concern about weight gain among people has been high due to negative health consequences in addition to the increasing prevalence of the problem. Overweight and obesity also occur in patients with hemophilia. Analysis of literature shows that increased body weight might have a biomechanical effect on the spatial orientation of the pelvis and the lumbar spine. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and the parameters characterizing the alignment of the sacrum (SS, sacral slope), the pelvis (PT, pelvic tilt; PI, pelvic incidence) and th…

Transient Adipose Inflammatory Remodeling during High-Dose Semaglutide-Induced Weight Loss and Regain.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss improves obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction, yet resolution of adipose inflammation may be incomplete and can reappear during weight regain. Whether high-dose semaglutide induces sustained immunological remodeling of adipose and hepatic tissues during weight cycling remains unclear. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice with diet-induced obesity were treated with semaglutide (60 nmol/kg, intraperitoneally, every 3 days) or vehicle for 3 weeks, followed by drug withdrawal under continued high-fat diet feeding. Body weight, body composition, and glucose homeostasis were asses…

Lack of Substantial Post-Cessation Weight Increase in Electronic Cigarettes Users.

Minimization of post-cessation weight gain in quitters is important, but existing approaches (e.g., antismoking medications) shows only limited success. We investigated changes in body weight in smokers who quit or reduced substantially their cigarette consumption by switching to electronic cigarettes (ECs) use. Body weight and smoking/vaping history were extracted from medical records of smokers and ex-smokers to match three study groups: (1) regular EC users on at least two consecutive follow-up visits; (2) regular smokers (and not using ECs); (3) subjects who reported sustained smoking abst…

Small-for-gestational-age preterm-born infants already have lower bone mass during early infancy.

BACKGROUND: In preterm-born infants, low birth weight and diminished bone accretion deteriorate peak bone mass. Whether low birth weight is already associated with decreased bone mass during infancy is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of birth weight on bone accretion between term age (40 weeks postmenstrual age) and six months post-term in preterm-born infants. DESIGN: In 139 preterm-born infants (51% male, gestational age 30.3±1.5 weeks, birth weight 1341±288g) weight and whole-body bone mineral content (BMC, gram) were measured at term age and six months post-term. Graphical exploration of dimensions of preterm infant growth in weight in association with biological, nutritional, and energy expenditure conditions.

The small sample sizes of studies involving preterm infants limit the use of statistics for examination of multivariate conditions contributing to clinically important growth dimensions of weight: rate of weight gain, body composition (fat-free and fat mass), and weight relative to reference infants (z score). The authors used graphical analyses, including multivariate proportional matrix, parallel coordinates, and bivariate plots with regression lines and splines, to explore specific variables derived from a theoretical model of biological, nutritional intake, and energy expenditure condition

Selection of SUV normalization and reference tissue for quantitative [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT analysis.

BACKGROUND: [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT enables visualization of C-X-C chemokine receptor 4 expression, but quantitative accuracy depends on standardized uptake value (SUV) normalization and reference tissue selection. Body composition and variability across candidate organs may confound SUV interpretation. We retrospectively analyzed [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT scans from 40 patients without malignancy. Regions of interest were placed in the blood pool, liver, spleen, bone marrow, and muscle. Three SUV were calculated: SUV normalized by body weight (SUVbw) and SUV normalized by lean body mass (S…

Ventromedial and dorsomedial hypothalamic syndromes in the weanling rat: is the "center" concept really outmoded?

This report juxtaposes findings from weanling rats with precise lesions in the ventromedial (VMNL rats) to data of weanling rats with lesions in the dorsomedial (DMNL) hypothalamic nuclei. Despite the proximity of the two nuclei their destruction produces opposite effects in most cases but similar responses in other parameters. Absolute and relative food intake are normal in VMNL rats yet they become obese in the face of normal body weight gains. DMNL rats show both reduced absolute food intake and body weight but normal relative food intake and body composition. Both VMNL and DMNL cause reduc…
