Association of Skull Type, Diet, and Chronic Gingivostomatitis with Tooth Resorption in Cats Receiving Dental Treatment.

Tooth resorption (TR) is a common and painful dental disease in cats. The contributions of skull type, diet, and chronic gingivostomatitis (CGS) to its development remain unclear. We retrospectively reviewed 166 cats with TR confirmed radiographically to evaluate these associations. Brachycephalic cats (N = 33) were significantly younger than non-brachycephalic cats (7.1 ± 2.6 vs. 8.7 ± 3.8 years, p = 0.026) and had a higher prevalence of advanced Stage 4 TR lesions (p = 0.018). There was no significant difference between two groups of cats in sex distribution, diet type or wet food consumptio…

A qualitative study of factors that shape owners' attitudes towards the vaccination of dogs and cats.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is crucial for mitigating disease outbreaks in companion animals, yet recent reports indicate a decline in vaccination rates among cats and dogs in the UK. Furthermore, there are indications of an emergence of hesitancy towards vaccinating dogs and cats in a contingent of owners. METHODS: To provide deeper insights into these trends, qualitative methods were employed through in-depth interviews with eighteen dog and/or cat owners. Interviews were analysed using a grounded theory approach, which allowed for development of theories directly derived from the data. RESULT…

Stability of Cerebrospinal Fluid Proteins in Dogs and Cats: Effects of Refrigeration and Freezing Over Time.

BACKGROUND: The quantification of protein levels is an important part of standard cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. However, delays in processing due to shipment and/or laboratory opening schedules, combined with the need to preserve sample stability during storage, pose critical challenges to ensuring accurate diagnoses. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to assess the stability of CSF proteins in canine and feline samples refrigerated and subsequently frozen. METHODS: CSF samples were prospectively collected from dogs and cats. CSF protein levels were measured: immediately after collection; after r…

Shoulder arthrodesis as a treatment for severe shoulder deformity secondary to septic arthritis in two cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Two rescued juvenile cats with unilateral severe shoulder deformities (SDs) suspected to be secondary to septic arthritis were referred for further management. Comprehensive diagnostic evaluations confirmed SD with suspected septic arthritis in both cases. Because of the poor prognosis for preserving shoulder joint function, shoulder arthrodesis was performed to relieve pain and restore forelimb weightbearing ability. At 6 and 8 years postoperatively, both cats exhibited normal motor function in the affected limbs, no signs of lameness and maintained a good quality of life…

PCR detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in fecal samples from stray cats in Bangkok Metropolitan, Thailand.

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally important zoonotic parasite, with domestic cats serving as the definitive host by shedding oocysts into the environment, where they undergo sporulation, a process that increases the resistance of the oocyst wall and facilitates long-term environmental persistence. In densely populated urban environments, free-roaming cat populations may contribute to environmental contamination and pose a potential public health risk. Here, we assessed the presence of T. gondii DNA in fecal samples from stray cats residing in temple communities across Bangkok, Thailand, using mo…

Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) in domestic cats: epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and One Health implication.

Historically considered accidental hosts of influenza A viruses, domestic cats (Felis catus) have gained attention during the global expansion of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b. In addition to traditional exposure via predation on infected wild birds, recent outbreaks have highlighted novel transmission routes, including contaminated commercial raw poultry products and unpasteurised milk. The susceptibility of cats has been linked to the abundant distribution of α-2,3-linked sialic acid receptors in both the respiratory tract and the central nervous system, while …
