Dexamethasone suppresses T cell-mediated immunity and enhances disease susceptibility to Eimeria mivati infection.

The effect of dexamethasone (DEX) on Eimeria mivati infection in chickens was examined. Chickens given an extended DEX treatment produced significantly higher numbers of total oocysts following primary and secondary infections with E. mivati. Chickens treated with DEX intramuscularly or orally showed lower body weight gain in E. mivati infected or uninfected chickens as compared with the untreated group. Chickens given DEX intramuscularly showed a lower number of splenic lymphocytes. Flow cytometric analysis of lymphocyte composition revealed that the percentages of splenic lymphocytes bearing…

Vaccination for fowl plague.

Influenza A/turkey/Oregon/71 virus has antigenic characteristics of fowl plague virus but is avirulent for chickens. The virus was inoculated intratracheally in chickens at several dosage levels and resulted in the formation of antibody and immunity against fowl plague. The avirulent virus replicated in chickens and was recoverable by tracheal swab specimens up to 4 days after inoculation. Although the virus was transmitted to contact controls at the time when their cagemates were inoculated, it was not transmitted to contact controls placed with chickens inoculated 24 hours earlier. After 10 …

Cannabidiol and nano-selenium mediate intestinal barrier function by affecting mucosal microstructures, and gut-associated immunological and oxidative stress response in the gut of chickens infected with C. perfringens.

Nutritional additives with biological activity, such as cannabidiol (CBD) and nano-selenium (nano-Se), are viable to prevent bacterial diseases such as necrotic enteritis in chickens. The present study hypothesized that CBD and nano-Se mediate epigenetic and oxidative DNA changes in blood and intestinal epithelial cells and can affect intestinal development and functionality in broiler chickens at an early stage of infection with C. perfringens. This study revealed that both compounds, in combination under physiological or pathophysiological conditions, can act synergistically, improving the i…

Dietary supplementation with farnesol confers a protective effect on the intestine of broiler chickens challenged with lipopolysaccharide by reshaping intestinal flora structure and regulating TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Farnesol (FAN), one of plant essential oils, is widely found in a variety of natural plants. Studies demonstrated that FAN contributed to the antioxidant and immune function as well as improving the intestinal flora, however effects of it on the broiler chickens has not been fully characterized. In the present study, we present an undated report of its effects on growth performance, antioxidant and immune functions of broiler chickens challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). One hundred healthy male AA+ broiler chickens with uniform body weight were divided into control and FAN groups, there …

A newly developed temperature-sensitive Mycoplasma synoviae live attenuated strain prevents pathological lesions of the respiratory and reproductive tracts in chickens caused by a wild-type M. synoviae strain.

A field isolate of Mycoplasma synoviae, designated D14-383, caused pathogenic lesions in the air sac, trachea, lung, and ovary and induced a decline or stop in egg production and eggshell apex abnormalities in chickens after intratracheal inoculation. A live M. synoviae vaccine candidate was developed after in vitro passaging at 32°C from a wild-type M. synoviae strain originally isolated from the trachea of a 5-month-old asymptomatic layer chicken. In this study, the vaccine efficacy of the attenuated vaccine candidate strain against M. synoviae infection caused by the D14-383 strain was inve…

Comprehensive transcriptomic analysis of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis reveals the role of Aurora Kinase B in regulating follicular granulosa cell development and steroid hormone synthesis in Wuding chickens.

Wuding chicken, an indigenous avian breed native to China, is known for its high-quality meat and eggs. However, it has a low egg production rate, poor reproductive traits, and strong broody behavior. Ovarian follicle development is essential for egg production and reproduction, being regulated by the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary (HPO) axis. Despite its significance, the molecular mechanism of this process in Wuding chicken is still unclear. In this study, the expression profiles of the hypothalamus, pituitary and ovary of Wuding chickens during laying and brooding periods were sequenced and a…

Interaction between Enrofloxacin and Three Essential Oils (Cinnamon Bark, Clove Bud and Lavender Flower)-A Study on Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli Strains Isolated from 1-Day-Old Broiler Chickens.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) causes a variety of infections outside the intestine. The treatment of these infections is becoming increasingly difficult due to the emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains, which can also be a direct or indirect threat to humans as consumers of poultry products. Therefore, alternative antimicrobial agents are being sought, which could be essential oils, either administered individually or in interaction with antibiotics. Sixteen field isolates of E. coli (originating from 1-day-old broilers) and the ATCC 25922 reference strain were tested. Com
