Depression and Suicidal Ideation among Patients Receiving Opioid Maintenance Treatments Considering Cognitive Flexibility.

Objective: Cognitive flexibility is associated with psychiatric disorders. Drug addicts experience more psychiatric disorders. This research aimed to examine depression and suicidal ideation among those receiving opioid maintenance treatment (OMT), taking into account the mediating role of cognitive flexibility. Method : This cross-sectional research was conducted on patients who were enrolled in the OMT program in Semnan in 2021 and abstained from opioid use for at least one year. 126 participants (115 males and 11 females) were randomly selected from among patients in three therapeutic group

Chronic escitalopram in healthy volunteers has specific effects on reinforcement sensitivity: a double-blind, placebo-controlled semi-randomised study.

Several studies of the effects on cognition of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), administered either acutely or sub-chronically in healthy volunteers, have found changes in learning and reinforcement outcomes. In contrast, to our knowledge, there have been no studies of chronic effects of escitalopram on cognition in healthy volunteers. This is important in view of its clinical use in major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Consequently, we aimed to investigate the chronic effect of the SSRI, escitalopram, on measures of 'cold' cognition (includin

Cognitive and Physical Intervention in Metals' Dysfunction and Neurodegeneration.

Metals-especially iron, copper and manganese-are important elements of brain functions and development. Metal-dysregulation homeostasis is associated with brain-structure damage to the motor, cognitive and emotional systems, and leads to neurodegenerative processes. There is more and more evidence that specialized cognitive and motor exercises can enhance brain function and attenuate neurodegeneration in mechanisms, such as improving neuroplasticity by altering the synaptic structure and function in many brain regions. Psychological and physical methods of rehabilitation are now becoming incre

A Pilot Study of Cognitive Impairment in Longstanding Electroconvulsive Therapy-treated Schizophrenia Patients Versus Controls.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), though reliable and effective, is controversial due to its media portrayal as a treatment with severe side effects. Electroconvulsive therapy is mainly given to patients suffering from affective disorders and treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Although past research assessed the amount and duration of memory loss due to ECT, little is known about its influence on cognition for patients suffering from schizophrenia, whose cognitive decline is an inherent part of their illness. We aimed to test whether maintenance ECT causes cognitive decline among el

Is the Discrimination of Subjective Cognitive Decline from Cognitively Healthy Adulthood and Mild Cognitive Impairment Possible? A Pilot Study Utilizing the R4Alz Battery.

BACKGROUND: The early diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders before the symptoms' onset is the ultimate goal of the scientific community. REMEDES for Alzheimer (R4Alz) is a battery, designed for assessing cognitive control abilities in people with minor and major neurocognitive disorders. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the R4Alz battery's tasks differentiate subjective cognitive decline (SCD) from cognitively healthy adults (CHA) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: The R4Alz battery was administered to 175 Greek adults, categorized in five groups a) healthy young adults (HYA; n =

Psychological and Cognitive Markers of Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia-A Clinical Neuropsychologist's View on Diagnostic Criteria and Beyond.

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is the second leading cognitive disorder caused by neurodegeneration in patients under 65 years of age. Characterized by frontal, insular, and/or temporal brain atrophy, patients present with heterogeneous constellations of behavioral and psychological symptoms among which progressive changes in social conduct, lack of empathy, apathy, disinhibited behaviors, and cognitive impairments are frequently observed. Since the histopathology of the disease is heterogeneous and identified genetic mutations only account for ~30% of cases, there are no r

Widespread Volumetric Reductions in Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Patients Displaying Compromised Cognitive Abilities.

OBJECTIVE: Progress toward understanding brain mechanisms in psychosis is hampered by failures to account for within-group heterogeneity that exists across neuropsychological domains. We recently identified distinct cognitive subgroups that might assist in identifying more biologically meaningful subtypes of psychosis. In the present study, we examined whether underlying structural brain abnormalities differentiate these cognitively derived subgroups. METHOD: 1.5T T1 weighted structural scans were acquired for 168 healthy controls and 220 patients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder phenotype and intellectual disability in females with epilepsy and PCDH-19 mutations.

INTRODUCTION: Autism features and various degrees of cognitive deficit are reported in patients with PCDH-19 mutations and epilepsy. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and, often, cognitive profile are usually assessed clinically. We studied autism phenotype and cognitive outcome in a series of patients using standardized tools for development and ASD. We aimed to describe the phenotype of ASD in this series and to understand whether ASD is strictly linked to intellectual disability (ID) or is present as a comorbidity. METHODS: Eight females aged 5 to 17years old with PCDH-19 mutations and epilep

Everolimus improves memory and learning while worsening depressive- and anxiety-like behavior in an animal model of depression.

Everolimus (EVR) is an orally-administered rapamycin analog that selectively inhibits the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) kinase (mainly mTORC1 and likely mTORC2) and the related signaling pathway. mTOR is a serine/threonine protein kinase regulating multiple important cellular functions; dysfunction of mTOR signaling has also been implicated in the pathophysiology of several neurological, neurodegenerative, developmental and cognitive disorders. EVR is widely used as an anti-neoplastic therapy and more recently in children with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). However, no clear correlat

Motor phenotype of decline in cognitive performance among community-dwellers without dementia: population-based study and meta-analysis.

BackgroundDecline in cognitive performance is associated with gait deterioration. Our objectives were: 1) to determine, from an original study in older community-dwellers without diagnosis of dementia, which gait parameters, among slower gait speed, higher stride time variability (STV) and Timed Up & Go test (TUG) delta time, were most strongly associated with lower performance in two cognitive domains (i.e., episodic memory and executive function); and 2) to quantitatively synthesize, with a systematic review and meta-analysis, the association between gait performance and cognitive decline (i

Effectiveness of brief group transdiagnostic therapy for emotional disorders in primary care: A randomized controlled trial identifying predictors of outcome.

AbstractBrief transdiagnostic psychotherapy is a possible approach for emotional disorders in primary care. The objective of the present randomized controlled trial was to determine its effectiveness compared with the treatment as usual based on pharmacological interventions in patients with mild/moderate symptoms. In addition, emotional regulation strategies and cognitive factors were studied as potential predictors. Participants (N = 105) were assigned to brief group therapy based on the Unified Protocol (n = 53) or treatment as usual (n = 52). They were assessed before and after the interve

Emotion regulation as a transdiagnostic process.

The current article addresses the consequences of emotion regulation (ER) for mental health. A large body of research has shown that alterations in ER are related to psychological disorders across different diagnostic categories. Because of the apparent ubiquity of ER difficulties in psychopathology, several authors have proposed that ER should be regarded as a transdiagnostic process. This article critically examines evidence regarding alterations in the use of cognitive ER strategies as a transdiagnostic process. Cognitive ER strategies are examined as 1 example of several possible ER-relate

Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome-A Disorder of Action-Perception Integration.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a multifaceted and complex neuropsychiatric disorder. Given that tics as motor phenomena are the defining and cardinal feature of Tourette syndrome, it has long been conceptualized as a motor/movement disorder. However, considering premonitory urges preceding tics, hypersensitivity to external stimuli and abnormalities in sensorimotor integration perceptual processes also seem to be relevant in the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome. In addition, tic expression depends on attention and tics can, at least partly and transiently, be controlled, so that cogniti

Low doses of methylmercury intoxication solely or associated to ethanol binge drinking induce psychiatric-like disorders in adolescent female rats.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is an environmental contaminant that provokes damage to developing brain. Simultaneously, the consumption of ethanol among adolescents has increased. Evidence concerning the effects of MeHg low doses per se or associated with ethanol during adolescence are scarce. Thus, we investigate behavioral disorders resulted from exposure to MeHg low doses and co-intoxicated with ethanol in adolescent rats. Wistar rats received chronic exposure to low doses of MeHg (40 μg/kg/day for 5 weeks) and/or ethanol binge drinking (3 g/kg/day at 3 days per week for 5 weeks). Animals were submi

A further assessment of decision-making in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) may be associated with impaired decision-making. Cognitive processes underlying this impairment remain unclear, mainly because previous assessments of this complex cognitive function were completed with a single test. Furthermore, clinical features such as mood status may impact this association. We aim to further explore the hypothesis of altered decision-making in AN. METHOD: Sixty-three adult women with AN and 49 female controls completed a clinical assessment and were assessed by three tasks related to decision-making [Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), Balloon Ana

Considering the Impact and Treatment of Sleep and Sleep Disorders in Eating Disorder Interventions.

Although research suggests that sleep problems are common among people with eating disorders, many eating disorder clinicians are less familiar with diagnosing and treating these conditions. The literature on sleep and eating disorders is relatively new, and there are few controlled trials testing if sleep disorder interventions work in populations with eating disorders. Furthermore, it is unknown how sleep disorder interventions can be adapted for clients with eating disorders. In this article, we provide an overview of sleep disorders that clinicians may encounter and an overview of evidence

Non-pharmacological mental health interventions for law enforcement officers: A systematic review.

There is a high incidence of law enforcement officers that suffer from mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression; however, specific interventions for law enforcement officers are rare. The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize current literature that investigated non-pharmacological mental health interventions for law enforcement officers. The systematic review was conducted following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar were searched from 1 Janu

Neurodiversity in surgery: Embracing cognitive difference in a demanding profession.

BACKGROUND: Neurodiversity encompasses natural variations in cognitive functioning, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and specific learning difficulties. While the concept is increasingly recognised in education and general workplaces, its relevance in medicine and particularly in surgery, remains underexplored. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with PRISMA 2020. Searches of PubMed, Embase, Medline, Global Health and PsycINFO databases up to July 2025 identified studies on neurodivergence among surgeons and healthcare professionals. Insights and considerations on predicting cognitive and behavioral disturbances in MND with pure motor onset.

This commentary discusses the study by Bicaj et al., which examines baseline predictors of cognitive and behavioral disturbances (C/BI) in motor neuron diseases (MNDs) with pure motor onset. The study's longitudinal design and use of the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral ALS Screen (ECAS) provide valuable insights into extramotor progression in MNDs. While the study offers important findings, including potential predictors such as age at onset and specific ECAS scores, it is limited by sample size and potential biases. Suggestions for future research include larger multicenter studies, incorp

Collaborative assessment as an intervention in the treatment of mental Illness: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Three meta-analyses suggested that the psychological assessment as a therapeutic intervention approach might have therapeutic effects but had unspecific inclusion criteria. METHODS: We searched four databases for RCTs that reported on the use of psychological assessment as an intervention. Two reviewers independently selected papers, extracted data, and assessed study quality. We conducted and reported the systematic review following the PRISMA statement. We assessed the Risk of bias in included studies using the Risk of Bias tool and graded the strength of the evidence with GRADE.
