BACKGROUND: Information on breast and colorectal cancer risk factors is widely available to women and the physicians who provide their healthcare; however, many women are unable to identify the major risk factors, continue to misperceive their personal risk of developing these cancers, and do not engage in routine early detection.
METHODS: Qualitative methods were used to investigate breast and colorectal cancer risk knowledge, perceptions, behaviors, and risk communication formats with low-income African-American and Hispanic study participants in Harlem, NY, aged 40-60 years.

PURPOSE: To review literature specific to the use of AAC with adults who have severe aphasia.
METHOD: The authors reviewed studies involving AAC interventions for adults with severe aphasia.
RESULTS: Published data support the use of aided and unaided AAC with adults with severe aphasia in controlled treatment contexts. Reported gains in communication typically have not generalized to everyday settings.
CONCLUSIONS: The application of AAC with persons with severe aphasia must address factors potentially limiting treatment success outside of training environments.

INTRODUCTION: Significant problems in clinician-patient communication have been described in the oncology literatures. Advanced stage non-small lung cancer a devastating disease, can cause the communication between survivors, significant others, and clinicians to falter. To date, however, no studies have used qualitative methods to examine experiential aspects of living with non-small cell lung cancer. Nor have any studies evaluated the tools survivors might use to repair some of the damage caused by living with this disease.

A residual hepatic vein to left atrial communication may result in progressive cyanosis after the Fontan procedure. This problem has usually been treated surgically by ligation or re-inclusion of the residual hepatic vein in the Fontan circulation. Previous attempts at transcatheter closure of such veins have been unsuccessful. An Amplatzer septal occluder was successfully used for transcatheter closure of a post-Fontan hepatic vein to pulmonary venous atrium fistula in an 8 year old boy.

Between 1983-1991 we have studied 5,221 two-dimensional echocardiography in patients suffering cardiopathies. Twelve (0.22%) had an aneurysm of the atrial septum associated with atrial septal defect. Eight patients had other cardiac anomalies. A 16-year-old Japanese girl with a persistent left superior vena cava draining into the coronary sinus was surgically treated. Both coronary sinus and left superior vena cava were totally unroofed in the posterior wall of the left atrium, but the routes were recognized as a deep ditch. Both preoperative diagnosis and the ensuing successful correction were performed only after the third cardiac catheterization and the third operation, respectively. The importance of preoperative diagnosis and the surgical procedures to correct this anomaly were discussed.

In 1,491 autopsy cases with CNS tumors observed at the Pathological Institute of the Medical Academy of Erfurt in the period from 1953 to 1976 (54,946 autopsies) 72 cases (4.8%) with neurinomas were found. They comprise 67 solitary neurinomas, 1 bilateral acoustic neurinoma without other signs of neurofibromatosis, and 4 cases of neurofibromatosis with neurinomas of the CNS. Among the 68 cases with CNS neurinomas (neurofibromatoses excluded) 87% were acoustic neurinomas, 12% spinal tumors, and 1 case was located in the trigeminal nerve.
