Pulmonary Paragonimiasis Mimicking Tuberculous Pleuritis: A Case Report.

Pulmonary paragonimiasis is a food-borne zoonosis with a wide variety of radiologic findings, which sometimes can be confused with tuberculosis and carcinoma. Therefore, differential diagnosis is always warranted. A 43-year-old male farmer, with productive cough, blood-tinged sputum and chest pain, as well as patchy consolidation and pleural effusions in chest computer tomography, was misdiagnosed of community-acquired pneumonia and tuberculosis. Complete blood cell count, sputum smear and culture, chest computer tomography, thoracoscopy, and biopsy. The diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis w

Diapause in ticks of the medically important Ixodes ricinus species complex.

Four members of the Ixodes ricinus species complex, Ixodes pacificus, Ixodes persulcatus, Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes scapularis, have, between them, a worldwide distribution within the northern hemisphere. They are responsible for the transmission of several animal and human pathogens, including the causal agents of Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis and human babesiosis. Despite the importance of these ticks as vectors, the knowledge and understanding of the role that diapause plays in their complex life cycles are confused and incomplete. In view of the

[PRECHORDAL AND MYOEPICARDIAL PLATES: TERMINOLOGICAL ASPECTS, THE PROBLEMS OF DEFINITION].

Most accurately, the prechordal plate (PCP) can be defined as the zone of close contact of cells of endodermal epithelium and mesenchyme in the region between the oropharyngeal membrane and the notochord. This structure is involved in the induction of the anterior parts of the brain and, in particular, the pituitary gland, as well as in the formation of some of eye muscles and bones of the skull base (chordal chondrocranium). Further studies are needed to clarify PCP involvement in the development of pharynx, esophagus, and their derivatives, as well as to determine the source and the mechanis

Intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma: a case report from an unusual site.

Intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma is a rare lymph node benign tumor, of unknown pathogenesis. Although benign, this lesion is frequently confused with metastatic lesions, especially in atypical sites. We report a 39-year-old man with a history of testicular malignant mixed germ cell tumor, presented with abdominal painless mass. The computed tomography of the abdomen confirmed the presence of 180 × 140 mm2 mass in the retroperitoneum with lympadenopathy on the right measuring 20 x 15 mm. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy, and a surgical exerese of the retroperitoneeum lymph node

Intracranial giant tuberculoma mimicking brain tumor: a case report.

Tuberculomas are small tumor-like lumps that can be seen, usually in large numbers, in central nervous system involvement of tuberculosis. Giant tuberculomas that are big enough to cause symptoms of compression are also encountered, though rarely. When they are really large, tuberculomas may result in increased intracranial compression, neurologic deficits, or epileptic attacks. Giant tuberculomas may be confused with brain tumors on cranial magnetic resonance imaging. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging and histopathology examinations are used for diagnosis. Although magnetic resonance imaging

Sex reassignment technology: the dilemma of transsexuals in Islam and Christianity.

The birth of people with confused or ambiguous sex makeup as a biological fact since the annals of history has posed the challenge of accommodating them within the binary gender of sociocultural systems. In this process, the role of religion as a defining factor in social engineering has been paramount. Major religions, such as Islam and Christianity, have addressed this issue within the frame of their God-ordained laws by devising a set of moral and legal imperatives specific to the "third gender." Modern developments in medicine and biology, however, have made sex reassignment possible for t

Extragnathic sino-orbital myxoma: an extremely rare tumor at an even rarer site.

Myxomas are rare benign tumors of primitive mesenchymal origin that usually arise from the soft tissues and occasionally from the bones. Bony myxomas predominantly arise from the jaw bone and hence are also known as gnathic myxomas. Any other bony myxomas are termed as extragnathic. In view of rarity, uncertain histogenesis, nonspecific clinical features, confusing terminology, and unclear management protocols, the backbone of diagnosis is a thorough histopathologic examination. Only 2 reports on myxomas arising from the frontal sinus have been documented previously. A young man presented with

Diagnosing pseudobulbar affect in traumatic brain injury.

Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is defined by episodes of involuntary crying and/or laughing as a result of brain injury or other neurological disease. Epidemiology studies show that 5.3%-48.2% of people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) may have symptoms consistent with (or suggestive of) PBA. Yet it is a difficult and often overlooked condition in individuals with TBI, and is easily confused with depression or other mood disorders. As a result, it may be undertreated and persist for longer than it should. This review presents the signs and symptoms of PBA in patients with existing TBI and outlines

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of floor of mouth: A case report with cytological, histological and immunohistochemical correlation.

A 61-year-old female presented with a 3-year-old swelling in the right floor of mouth. Clinical examination and fine needle aspiration cytology suggested a benign lesion. The mass was excised locally along with the involved sublingual and deep part of submandibular gland and duct. Post-operative histopathological examination revealed features of pleomorphic adenoma. However, on revision of histological sections, features were predominantly of a rare malignancy of the salivary glands, epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC), along with focal areas of adenoid cystic carcinoma (Ad CC). The tumor

Massive ovarian edema associated with a broad ligament leiomyoma: a case report and review.

Massive ovarian edema is a rare disorder in which there is marked accumulation of interstitial fluid in the stroma of the ovary. Grossly, the involved ovary is an enlarged solid mass with a smooth tan-white surface, easily confused with a neoplasm. Microscopically, it features diffuse interstitial edema sparing follicles and outer cortex, dilated lymphatic vessels, thick-walled veins, fibromatosis, and luteinized stromal cells. It is believed that massive ovarian edema arises from interference in lymphatic drainage and venous return of the ovary secondary to partial torsion among other etiolog

Reversible splenial lesion on the corpus callosum in nonfulminant hepatitis A presenting as encephalopathy.

Reversible focal lesions on the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) have been reported in patients with mild encephalitis/encephalopathy caused by various infectious agents, such as influenza, mumps, adenovirus, Varicella zoster, Escherichia coli, Legionella pneumophila, and Staphylococcus aureus. We report a case of a reversible SCC lesion causing reversible encephalopathy in nonfulminant hepatitis A. A 30-year-old healthy male with dysarthria and fever was admitted to our hospital. After admission his mental status became confused, and so we performed electroencephalography (EEG) and magne

Lucio's phenomenon: report of five cases.

The different clinical forms of leprosy are mainly related to the variety of immunological responses to the infection. Several forms of lepromatous leprosy are recognized, including macular, nodular, and diffuse. Lucio's phenomenon is a rare but distinctive skin eruption seen in patients with diffuse lepromatous leprosy. The diffuse lesions of Lucio's phenomenon have a predilection for the extremities, can include nodules, and heal with atrophic stellate scars; histologically, a necrotizing vasculitis accompanied by a nonspecific inflammatory reaction may be seen. Because of its rarity and sim

A short history of parathyroid hormone, its biological role, and pathophysiology of hormone excess.

Research on parathyroid hormone (PTH) over the preceding century was an exciting but sometimes confusing tale, with steady advances yet long periods of stalled progress, angry debates, and missed opportunities. There were sometimes fierce debates about the function of the parathyroids. These were finally resolved by 1925 when a potent biologic extract useful for testing in animals was finally made by Collip, and the role of PTH in calcium metabolism was established unequivocally. In the decades that followed, the pathophysiology of hormone excess (severe bone loss and other symptoms) was eluci

A fibromatosis case mimicking abdominal aorta aneurysm.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare fibrosing reactive process that may be confused with mesenteric fibromatosis. Abdominal aorta aneurysm is rare too and mostly develops secondary to Behcet's disease, trauma, and infection or connective tissue diseases. Incidence of aneurysms occurring as a result of atherosclerotic changes increases in postmenopausal period. Diagnosis can be established with arteriography, tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging associated with clinical findings. Tumors and cysts should be considered in differential diagnosis. Abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced comp

Dynamic 320-slice CT larynx for detection and management of idiopathic bilateral vocal cord paralysis.

Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord paralysis (VCP) is a rare and difficult condition often undiagnosed and frequently confused with asthma and other respiratory conditions. Accurate diagnosis is crucial since 80% of cases patients require surgical intervention, such as tracheostomy or laser surgery, to relieve symptoms. The "gold standard" for diagnosing VCP has been laryngoscopy. In this case study, we demonstrate for the first time that idiopathic bilateral VCP can be accurately diagnosed by means of a novel noninvasive methodology: dynamic volume 320-slice computed tomography larynx. Three-dim

Allergic reactions following contrast material administration: nomenclature, classification, and mechanisms.

In forensic pathology routine, fatal cases of contrast agent exposure can be occasionally encountered. In such situations, beyond the difficulties inherent in establishing the cause of death due to nonspecific or absent autopsy and histology findings as well as limited laboratory investigations, pathologists may face other problems in formulating exhaustive, complete reports, and conclusions that are scientifically accurate. Indeed, terminology concerning adverse drug reactions and allergy nomenclature is confusing. Some terms, still utilized in forensic and radiological reports, are outdated

Lumbar epidural varix mimicking perineural cyst.

Lumbar epidural varices are rare and usually mimick lumbar disc herniations. Back pain and radiculopathy are the main symptoms of lumbar epidural varices. Perineural cysts are radiologically different lesions and should not be confused with epidural varix. A 36-year-old male patient presented to us with right leg pain. The magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic lesion at S1 level that was compressing the right root, and was interpreted as a perineural cyst. The patient underwent surgery via right L5 and S1 hemilaminectomy, and the lesion was coagulated and removed. The histopathological

Angiomatous leiomyoma of the urachus: A rare entity masquerading as extraluminal gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

The urachus is a vestigial structure located between the dome of the bladder and the umbilicus, which results from the involution of the allantoic duct and the cloaca. Persistence of an embryonic urachal remnant can cause various problems during childhood and young adulthood. Urachal leiomyoma is a rare entity with very few cases being reported in literature. It can be misdiagnosed and confused with a wide spectrum of intra-abdominal or pelvic disorders. We hereby report a case of angiomatous leiomyoma originating from the urachal remnant in a 45-year-old lady, masquerading as extraluminal gas

[Pituitary pituicytoma].

Pituicytomas are rare entities which develop in the neurohypophysis. They were included in the last World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Central Nervous System Tumours in 2007, but for many years they have been confused with other pituitary tumours. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman who was diagnosed of a tumour in the suprasellar region during an infertility study due to hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and slight hyperprolactinemia. A standard pterional approach was performed, achieving total tumour excision. After the surgery the patient suffered bitemporal hemianopsia, di

Pseudotumoral hydatid cyst of chest wall.

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection caused by Echinoccosis granulosus and our country was an endemic area. Osseous localization is uncommon and can be confused with tumor. We present a case of a hydatid cyst with rib involvement in a 57-year-old man presented with thoracic pain and swelling mimicking chest wall tumor. We confirmed diagnosis only by surgical exploration and histopathology exam because radiology is not conclusive. Surgery remains the first choice for treatment in hydatid cyst disease that can remove the parasite radically. However, in osseous localization pre and postoperati
