A Systematic Review of Vertigo: Negligence in Pregnancy.

From conception to childbirth, there are many physical, hormonal, and psychological changes that a woman undergoes during pregnancy. During this time, balance is also affected, resulting in symptoms like vertigo and unsteadiness. These symptoms can lead to physical impairment and disability and can develop at any time. Vertigo in pregnancy has not been extensively written about. The subject of a narrative review is vertigo in pregnant patients. In pregnant women, hormonal alterations in the peripheral tissues and inner ear organs may contribute to vertigo. Meniere's disease, mild convulsive po

[The academic sources of You Ke Tie Jing].

You Ke Tie Jing, as the most widely published Chinese pediatric work, first published in 1695. Its writing style was influenced by You Ke Bai Xiao Quan Shu in the Ming Dynasty. Its section of the Pediatric Tuina was related to You Ke Bai Xiao Quan Shu, Xiao Er An Mo Jing, Xiao Er Tuina Mi Zhi, and Xiao Er Tuina Mi Jue. The section of Pediatric Disease was based on You Ke Bai Xiao Quan Shu and the author's own identification of symptoms, such as febrile convulsion, fever, and umbilical wind. It documented seventy-five prescriptions of which 70 were the same as You Ke Bai Xiao Quan Shu. It can b

Fenfluramine for treatment-resistant epilepsy in Dravet syndrome and other genetically mediated epilepsies.

Fenfluramine hydrochloride, initially utilized as a weight loss drug in the 1970s and later removed from the market for adverse cardiopulmonary side effects, has since been repurposed as an antiseizure medicine (ASM). The potential antiseizure effects of fenfluramine were first identified in patients with photosensitive epilepsy in the 1980s but it was not rigorously explored as a treatment option until 30 years later. Compared with other ASMs, fenfluramine offers a novel mechanism by acting on serotonin and σ1 receptors, demonstrated in vitro and in vivo in animal models of Dravet syndrome. R

[Identification of a novel mutation of MBD5 gene in a pedigree affected with autosomal dominant mental retardation type 1].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic basis for a child with mental and motor retardation, language impairment, facial dysmorphism and epilepsy. METHODS: Whole exome sequencing was carried out to detect pathogenic variant in the proband, and candidate variant was selected based on his phenotype. Sanger sequencing was used to verify the variant in the proband, his parents and other family members. RESULTS: The proband was found to carry a frameshifting mutation of MBD5 gene, namely c.2217delT (p.F739Lfs*6), which was inherited from his mother and unreported previously. Sanger sequencing confirmed

A fatal case of traumatic brain injury with severe coagulopathy due to Rhabdophis tigrinus (yamakagashi) bites: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Yamakagashi venom is a prothrombin activator, leading to disseminated intravascular coagulation. We report a fatal case of severe coagulopathy from head trauma assumed to be caused by a yamakagashi bite. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old man fell and developed systemic tonic-clonic convulsions. Head computed tomography revealed brain contusion and acute subdural hematoma. Physical examination revealed two bite marks with persistent bleeding on the right lower leg. The patient stated that he had been bitten by some creature 3 days prior, but the bite was left untreated. Laboratory

[Diagnosing Status Epilepticus].

Both diffusion-weighted MRI(DWI)modalities and continuous electroencephalography(cEEG)are useful for diagnosing status epilepticus. In case 1, DWI showed hyperintense regions in the right-sided parieto-occipital cortex during peri-ictal status. Intensity of the regions normalized after left hemiparesis improved. In status epilepticus , DWI usually depicts some hyperintense regions, such as the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and thalamic pulvinar, where ictal brain activity and its propagation are likely occur the seizure. In case 2, cEEG led to an accurate diagnosis of non-convulsive status epi

A Chinese patient with epilepsy and WWOX compound heterozygous mutations.

Early infantile epileptic encephalopathy type 28 is a refractory epilepsy with early onset, poor prognosis, and hereditary causes. WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX) gene mutation can result in epileptic encephalopathy, but the mechanism remains unclear. We present the case of a patient with epilepsy and WWOX compound heterozygous mutations. The seizures manifested as tonic-clonic, convulsive and were refractory to drugs. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a widened subarachnoid space and thin corpus callosum. The patient died from asphyxia at the age of one year and 23 days. Peripheral

Tb1, a Neurotoxin from Tityus bahiensis Scorpion Venom, Induces Epileptic Seizures by Increasing Glutamate Release.

Here, we report the neurotoxic effects aroused by the intracerebral injection (in rats) of Tb1, which is a neurotoxin isolated from Tityus bahiensis scorpion venom. Biochemical analyses have demonstrated that this toxin is similar to the gamma toxin from T. serrulatus, which is a β-scorpion toxin that acts on sodium channels, causing the activation process to occur at more hyperpolarized membrane voltages. Male Wistar rats were stereotaxically implanted with intrahippocampal electrodes and cannulas for electroencephalographic recording and the evaluation of amino acid neurotransmitters levels.

[Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura during pregnancy refractory to plasma exchange and rituximab].

A 30-year-old woman who was 14 weeks pregnant was admitted to our hospital due to purpura, nasal bleeding, and abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) based on the presence of hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, decreased ADAMTS 13 activity (<0.01 IU/ml), and high ADAMTS 13 inhibitor levels (4.8 BU/ml). Plasma exchange (PE) and steroid therapy were immediately administered. However, because she did not respond to these therapeutic approaches, rituximab was additionally administered on the sixth day of treatment. The level of ADAMTS 13 inhibitor

Discovery of Benzenesulfonamide Derivatives as Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors with Effective Anticonvulsant Action: Design, Synthesis, and Pharmacological Evaluation.

Two series of novel benzenesulfonamide derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their human carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) inhibitory activity against four isoforms, hCA I, hCA II, hCA VII, and hCA IX. It was found that compounds of both series showed low to medium nanomolar inhibitory potential against all isoforms. Some of these derivatives displayed selective inhibition against the epileptogenesis related isoforms hCA II and VII, within the nanomolar range. These potent hCA II and VII inhibitors were evaluated as anticonvulsant agents against MES and sc-PTZ induced convulsions. T

The Epidemiology of Emergency In-Patient Hospitalisations Among Those with 'No Fixed Abode' (Homeless) 2005-2014: What Lessons Can Be Learnt.

Estimates show that homelessness is increasing in Ireland. This study analysed the epidemiology of emergency hospitalisations among those experiencing homelessness between 2005-2014. All in-patient admissions to acute hospitals classified with 'no fixed abode' were extracted from the Hospital In-patient Enquiry System. Data were analysed using JMP. There were 2,051 in-patient emergency admissions of people classified with 'no fixed abode' during the study period, an increase of 406% since 2005 (78 in 2005 vs. 395 in 2014). The mean age was 40.6 (S.D. 13.2). The majority of patients (1,176 /2,0

Ictal sinus pause and myoclonic seizure in a child.

Ictal tachycardia and bradycardia are common arrhythmias; however, ictal sinus pause and asystole are rare. Ictal arrhythmia is mostly reported in adults with temporal lobe epilepsy. Recently, ictal arrhythmia was recognized as a major warning sign of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. We present an interesting case of a child with ictal sinus pause and asystole. A 27-month-old girl was hospitalized due to 5 episodes of convulsions during the past 2 days. Results of routine electroencephalography (EEG) were normal, but she experienced brief generalized tonic seizure for 3 days. During video-

Surgical Treatment Alone of Cerebral Aspergillosis in Immunocompetent Patient.

Aspergillosis is a disease that predominantly affects immunocompromised patients. The incidence in immunocompetents is rare, and manifestation is generally pulmonary. Few reports in the literature refer to isolated cerebral aspergillosis in individuals with no chronic comorbidities. We describe a case of a 59-year-old rural worker without previous pathologies who had a partial convulsive crisis in a subtle form, with self-limiting and nonrecurrent secondary generalization. Diagnostic investigation demonstrated a subcortical tumorlike lesion in the right precentral gyrus by nuclear magnetic res

Exome sequencing identifies SUCO mutations in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) is the main type and most common medically intractable form of epilepsy. Severity of disease-based stratified samples may help identify new disease-associated mutant genes. We analyzed mRNA expression profiles from patient hippocampal tissue. Three of the seven patients had severe mTLE with generalized-onset convulsions and consciousness loss that occurred over many years. We found that compared with other groups, patients with severe mTLE were classified into a distinct group. Whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing validation in all seven patients id
