Snapping of the medial head of the triceps and recurrent dislocation of the ulnar nerve. Anatomical and dynamic factors.

We describe seventeen patients (twenty-two limbs) who had snapping (dislocation) of both the ulnar nerve and the medial head of the triceps over the medial epicondyle. Two patients (two limbs) were seen because of painless snapping, four patients (five limbs) had snapping and pain in the medial aspect of the elbow, three patients (three limbs) had symptoms related to the ulnar nerve only, and six patients (seven limbs) had snapping and symptoms related to the ulnar nerve. In addition, snapping was identified incidentally on routine screening in five asymptomatic limbs in four patients, one of …

Long-Term Patient Reported Outcomes of Surgical Versus Nonsurgical Management of Pediatric Medial Epicondyle Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Indications for surgical fixation of medial epicondyle fractures have been debated for over 4 decades, with no clear consensus supporting operative versus nonoperative management. Medial epicondyle fractures account for ∼11% to 20% of pediatric elbow fractures and are associated with posterior elbow dislocation in up to 60% of cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate long-term outcomes of surgical versus nonsurgical management of medial epicondyle fractures with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. METHODS: Pediatric patients evaluated for a medial epicondyle fracture at a tert…

Osteosynthesis versus arthroplasty in the management of radial head fractures: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Radial head fractures are among the most common elbow injuries in adults. The choice between osteosynthesis and radial head arthroplasty (RHA) remains controversial, particularly in comminuted or unstable fracture patterns. This study aims to compare functional and radiographic outcomes, complication rates, and patient satisfaction following osteosynthesis or arthroplasty in the surgical management of radial head fractures. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 35 patients treated surgically for radial head fractures between 2018 and 2022 was analyzed. Fractures were classified using…

Open reduction can be a reasonable, safe and effective choice in complex paediatric supracondylar humeral fractures operative treatment.

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humeral fractures are among the most common paediatric injuries. Displacement and consequent need for reduction impose operative treatment. Restoration of the anatomy of the distal part of the humerus prevents deformities and functional disorders of the elbow and upper limb. Stable K-wire fixation can be succeeded either by closed or open reduction method. AIM: To investigate the safety and efficacy of open reduction method in the operative treatment of Gartland type III and IV supracondylar humeral fractures in children. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 131 case…

Distal humeral fractures treated with ORIF or hemiarthroplasty: A matched-pair analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the distal humerus are common in older patients with osteoporotic bone, often presenting as complex, multi-fragmentary injuries involving the articular surface. This complexity complicates the decision between open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and total elbow arthroplasty (TEA), as both procedures carry specific risks. Hemiarthroplasty (HA) may be a viable alternative, yet few studies have compared its outcomes with those of ORIF. In this retrospective matched-pair study, we aimed to compare primary HA versus ORIF for complex distal humerus fractures. Our h…

Effect of Postoperative Immobilization Method on Outcomes Following Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Transosseous Foveal Repair: Long-Arm Cast Versus Muenster Brace.

BACKGROUD: The optimal postoperative immobilization method following triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) foveal repair remains debated. While long-arm casting effectively restricts wrist rotation, it also limits elbow movement and may cause discomfort. The Muenster brace, which allows partial elbow flexion while restricting wrist rotation, has been proposed as an alternative. This study compared clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and complication rates between long-arm cast (LAC) and Muenster brace immobilization. METHODS: A retrospective comparative study was conducted on 40 cases…
