Chronic partial bladder outlet obstruction was created in mini-pigs by implanting a 6-7 mm ring around the proximal urethra. After a median obstruction period of 63 days, the ring was removed and after a median recovery period of 60 days the animals were sacrificed. At each occasion stepwise cystometry, measurement of residual urine, muscle strips studies with electrical and carbachol stimulation, and stereological estimations of length density and total length of acetylcholinesterase positive nerves were performed. The results can be summarized as follows: (1) unchanged sensitivity of muscle

Electrical stimulation of paralyzed laryngeal muscles implanted with nerve-muscle pedicles (NMP) has resulted in documented return of motion. No study, however, has yet determined how NMP excitability correlates with that of normal muscle or nerve. In six anesthetized dogs, one hemilarynx was denervated and the paralyzed thyroarytenoid, cricothyroid, and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles were reinnervated via NMPs originating from the ansa hypoglossi nerve. After 4.6 to 5.7 months, an electric stimulator delivering biphasic pulses of variable amplitude and widths was used to test thresholds for

The best approach to management of bilateral vocal cord paralysis, with its resultant airway compromise, has not yet been universally agreed upon. Recently proposed methods have included direct stimulation of the laryngeal dilators by the modulation of rhythmic information from the chest wall, diaphragm, phrenic nerve, or accessory muscles of respiration. In such an approach, the information obtained is not necessarily related to inspiration only, and direct implantation of a stimulating electrode into the laryngeal musculature may not be fully efficient and tolerated over time. To obviate suc

The eye has a dual vascular supply. The uveal vessels are distributed within the choroid, the ciliary body, and the iris; and the retinal vessels within the inner parts of the retina. The vascularization of the uvea is very rich and the blood flow is high, which stabilizes the temperature of the eye. The vascularization of the retina is relatively sparse, which is an obvious advantage for the optics. The perfusion pressure in the eye can be defined as the local arterial blood pressure minus the intraocular pressure. Reductions in perfusion pressure, caused by increments in intraocular pressure

Electrical stimulation of Nucleus Ambiguus (NA) and of Lateral Hypothalamus (LH) produces a sympathetic response that partly inhibits insulin secretion in anesthetized rats in vivo. This inhibitory component is accompanied by a stimulatory one that can, in both cases, be revealed by the infusion of an alpha-blocker to the rats. The analogy between the stimulatory effect on insulin secretion due to NA or LH electrical stimulation is only partial. Indeed the NA-induced insulin secretion is abolished by vagotomy, while that induced by LH stimulation appears to be mediated by possible release of h

Radioautographs of (45)Ca-labeled frog skeletal muscles have been prepared using freeze-dry and vapor fixation techniques to avoid displacement of the isotope during the preparation of the radioautographs. (45)Ca has been localized in resting muscles exposed to (45)Ca Ringer's for 5 min or 5 hr and in isotopically labeled muscles recovering from tetanic stimulation at room temperature or at 4 degrees C. In muscles soaked at rest for 5 min (45)Ca was present almost exclusively in the terminal cisternae. In all other muscles there were three sites at which the isotope was concentrated: (a) the t

In recent years, the ongoing development of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has demonstrated significant potential in the treatment and rehabilitation of various brain diseases. In particular, the combined application of TES and TMS has shown considerable clinical value due to their potential synergistic effects. This paper first systematically reviews the mechanisms underlying TES and TMS, highlighting their respective advantages and limitations. Subsequently, the potential mechanisms of transcranial electromagnetic combined stimulation ar

Thirty-five patients with chronic pain were treated by electrical stimulation of the dorsal columns through implanted epidural electrodes. In 5, such stimulation had minimal pain-reducing effect during an immediate postoperative trial period, and the electrodes were removed. In the remaining 30, an electrode system for chronic stimulation was implanted. Four of these died of related or unrelated causes. The electrode system was removed in 2 patients due to infections, and in 1 due to mechanical discomfort. The remaining 23 patients answered a questionnaire concerning the pain reducing effect o

The inflammatory foreign body response (FBR) following cochlear implantation (CI) can negatively impact CI outcomes, including increased electrode impedances. This study aims to investigate the long-term efficacy of dexamethasone eluting cochlear implant and locally delivered dexamethasone, a potent anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid on the intracochlear FBR and electrical impedance post-implantation in a murine model and human subjects. The left ears of CX3CR1 +/GFP Thy1 +/YFP (macrophage-neuron dual reporter) mice were implanted with dexamethasone-eluting cochlear implants (Dex-CI) or standard

The early development of nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) was linked to the discovery of electricity. This relationship had been concluded by observing the effect of applying electricity to the body of an animal and discovering that nerves and muscles themselves could produce electricity. We attempt to review the historical evolution of NCS and EMG over the last three centuries by reviewing the landmark publications of Galvani, Adrian, Denny-Brown, Larrabee, and Lambert. In 1771, Galvani showed that electrical stimulation of animal muscle tissue produced contraction an

BACKGROUND: Camphor-induced and pentylenetetrazol-induced brain seizures were first used to relieve psychiatric illnesses in 1934. Electrical inductions (electroconvulsive therapy, ECT) followed in 1938. These were easier and less expensive to administer and quickly became the main treatment method. In 1957, seizure induction with the inhalant anesthetic flurothyl was tested and found to be clinically effective. For many decades, complaints of memory loss have stigmatized and inhibited ECT use. Many variations of electricity in form, electrode placement, dosing, and stimulation method offered s

In absence of acoustic stimulation, the auditory nerve generates electrical noise with a spectral peak between 300 and 3000 Hz (Dolan et al., 1990). This electrical noise is eliminated when the dendrites of auditory nerve fibers are damaged by kainic acid (KA). We hypothesized that the KA-induced damage to the afferent dendrites might alter cochlear micromechanics or modify outer hair cell (OHC) electromotility. The KA-induced decrease in spontaneous electrical noise from the auditory nerve could conceivably reduce the spontaneous sounds recorded in the ear canal and the postulated change in c

Electricity has been used in medicine for almost two millenniums beginning with electrical chocks from the torpedo fish and ending with the implantation of neuromodulators and neuroprostheses. These implantable stimulators aim to improve functional independence and quality of life in various groups of disabled people. New indications for neuromodulation are still evolving and the field is rapidly advancing. Thanks to modern science and computer technology, electrotherapy has reached a degree of sophistication where it can be applied relatively safely and effectively in a variety of nervous sys

Persistent atrial standstill is an uncommon clinical finding, this condition has no atrial electrical activity and do not respond to electrical stimulation. Electrophysiologic mapping of the heart, demonstrates two types of standstill: total and partial. There are three types of patients with this condition: patients with chronic cardiopathy, patients with muscular dystrophy and the third idiopathic group. In this article, we present two clinical cases, the fist one with dilated cardiomiopathy, in which we demonstrated total atrial standstill. The second patient with rheumatic heart disease, i

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the retina in health and disease is a key issue for neuroscience and neuroengineering applications such as retinal prostheses. During degeneration, the retinal network undergoes complex and multi-stage neuroanatomical alterations, which drastically impact the retinal ganglion cell (RGC) response and are of clinical importance. Here we present a biophysically detailed in silico model of the cone pathway in the retina that simulates the network-level response to both light and electrical stimulation.
METHODS: The model included 11, 138 cells belonging to nine differe

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) include a group of musculoskeletal disorders that may involve increased responsiveness of nociceptive neurons in the central nervous system (ie, central sensitization). To test this hypothesis further, this study examined whether, as compared with healthy subjects, patients with chronic TMD have a greater propensity to develop secondary mechanical hyperalgesia-a phenomenon that can be confidently attributed to central sensitization. In this case-control study, we assessed the area of secondary mechanical hyperalgesia induced experimentally by delivering high-f

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence regarding the reliability of CPT and PT measurements to gauge mandibular perception. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the test-retest reliability of CPT and PT values obtained from the mandibular oral mucosa and to test the bilateral differences in CPT and PT values obtained from the mental foramen region and buccal shelf region by a single operator.
METHODS: CPT and PT values were obtained from the mental foramen and buccal shelf regions of 20 volunteers (10 males and 10 females; average age: 26.4 ± 2.6 years) by using the Neurometer CPT/C® device to de

A wealth of evidence suggests a role for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) in the aetiology of depression and in the mode of action of antidepressant drugs. Less clear is the involvement of this neurotrophin in other stress-related pathologies such as anxiety disorders. The dorsal periaqueductal grey matter (DPAG), a midbrain area rich in BDNF and TrkB receptor mRNAs and proteins, has been considered a key structure in the pathophysiology of panic disorder. In this study we investigated the effect of intra-DPAG injection of BDNF in a

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is widely used for the treatment of movement disorders including Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia and, to a lesser extent, certain treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder. Rather than a single unifying mechanism, DBS likely acts via several, nonexclusive mechanisms including local and network-wide electrical and neurochemical effects of stimulation, modulation of oscillatory activity, synaptic plasticity, and, potentially, neuroprotection and neurogenesis. These different mechanisms vary in importanc

Refractory angina pectoris is defined as angina refractory to optimal medical treatment and standard coronary revascularization procedures. Despite recent therapeutic advances, patients with refractory angina pectoris are not adequately treated. Spinal cord stimulation is a minimally invasive and reversible technique which utilizes electrical neuromodulation by means of an electrode implanted in the epidural space. It has been reported to be an effective and safe treatment for refractory angina pectoris. We report a case of spinal cord stimulation which has effectively relieved chest pain due
