Versatile Exoskeleton Control Supports Elderly Joint Energetics During Hip-Intensive Tasks.

Age-related mobility decline is frequently accompanied by a redistribution of joint kinetics, where older adults compensate for reduced ankle function by increasing demand on the hip. Paradoxically, this compensatory shift typically coincides with age-related reductions in maximal hip power. Although robotic exoskeletons can provide immediate energetic benefits, conventional control strategies have limited previous studies in this population to specific tasks such as steady-state walking, which do not fully reflect mobility demands in the home and community. Here, we implement a task-agnostic

Chip electrophoresis titration biosensors: Recent developments for biomedical targets.

Chip Electrophoresis Titration (ET) is an alternative distance-based measurement approach for Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) where the idea of acid-base titration is applied in a microchannel to detect chemical and biological targets through a visual signal analysis. ET principle was initially established utilizing large scale capillary-based Equipment's, where bulky devices were used to access an extensive range of targets analytes, which including disease-related metabolites, metal ions, food contaminants, and proteins. However, regardless of the fast development in miniaturization and the gro

Comparative numerical and experimental evaluation of 3D-printed micromixers for biotechnological applications.

Micromixers are essential in microfluidic-based biotechnology and diagnostics, where reproducible reactions and rapid mass transfer are crucial. Although many geometries exist, consistent comparison across dimensions, fabrication methods, and evaluation techniques remains challenging. In this study, we present a comparative analysis of six micromixer designs, focusing on mixing efficiency, pressure drop, shear stress, and the energy-dissipation rate. The devices were fabricated using high-definition 3D printing and studied experimentally and with high-resolution computational fluid dynamics (C

Design and simulation-based evaluation of a novel tracheostomy high-flow therapy device interface: a preclinical study.

BACKGROUND: High-flow tracheal oxygen (HFTO) does not generate significant positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), which may limit its clinical applicability. We designed a novel high-flow tracheal interface (nHFTI) and compared the PEEP and other respiratory parameters it generated with those of the traditional high-flow tracheal interface (tHFTI) across a range of flow rates. METHODS: We conducted a randomized crossover bench study. A size 8 cuffed tracheostomy tube was connected to the high-flow therapy (HFT) device using two different interfaces. A high-fidelity lung simulator was used t

Learning curve estimation and insertion depth in Veress needle insertion using a conventional Veress needle and the VeressPlus™ needle.

BACKGROUND: The Veress Needle (VN) is commonly used in establishing pneumoperitoneum in laparoscopic surgery. However, severe vascular and/or visceral complications can occur due to overshoot at the insertion of the VN in the abdominal cavity. In order to investigate whether the new VeressPLUS needle (VN+) could improve safety, the learning curve of this needle was compared to that of a conventional VN, under standardized conditions. METHODS: In total, 26 residents and med students, without prior Veress needle experience, were recruited and randomly assigned to VN or the VN+ group. A learning

Development of a high-performance sliding microneedle-lateral flow immunoassay strip device for ultra-rapid point-of-care diagnosis.

Interstitial fluid (ISF) is a promising biofluid for non-invasive diagnostics, but its clinical application is limited by slow extraction rates and small sample volumes. To address these challenges, we developed the high-performance sliding microneedle-lateral flow immunoassay (HP-SML) device, an improved microneedle (MN)-based platform for rapid ISF extraction and on-site biomarker detection. The device incorporates extended MNs (1400 μm), a 3D-printed insertion case, and a lateral flow assay (LFA), enabling efficient ISF collection and immediate visual confirmation of test results. The HP-SM

Optimization and fabrication of a novel 3D-printed variable density range modulation device for proton FLASH beams.

BACKGROUND: For proton FLASH therapy, range-modulating devices are inserted in the beam path to create a spread-out-Bragg-peak (SOBP) for ultrafast delivery using a single energy pencil beam scanning technique. Current design typically consists of uniform density spikes with range modulation achieved by changing the area and height of the spikes, which has limited structural stability and modulation flexibility. PURPOSE: We present a new class of 3D-printed range-modulating devices for particle therapy with spatially modulated density. METHODS: PixelPrint technology (Laboratory for Advanced

A patient-specific, 3D printed neurostimulator enabling focal transcranial electrical stimulation and EEG at home.

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic potential of non-invasive transcranial electric stimulation (tES) is growing, but challenges in tailoring treatments to individual patients persist. We demonstrated that personalized montages, informed by biophysical modeling, can reduce dose variability and improve target engagement. However, traditional setups are prone to electrode placement errors, leading to inconsistent dosage, localization and potential off-target engagement. METHODS: We developed a pipeline for creating patient-specific 3D-printed caps based on individual MRI scans to allow custom placement

An auxetic insole design with reverse graded-stiffness to relieve detrimental tissue stresses under bony prominence of calcaneus in diabetic foot.

To effectively mitigate detrimental tissue stresses of the diabetic foot for preventing ulceration, contemporary strategies frequently utilize pressure-relief insoles. In this study, we have developed an innovative enhanced pressure-relief insole that integrate auxetic structures with a reverse graded-stiffness property. We introduce a novel modification to the insole internal structure, exhibiting untraditional regional stiffness from the center to the periphery. We utilize a validated finite element (FE) heel model of a diabetic patient to evaluate the effectiveness of the insole, computing

Valve-controlled needle-type "mix and detect" integrated distance-based sensor with visual color zoning for point-of-care testing of tacrolimus.

The concentration of tacrolimus (TAC) must be controlled within a certain range for homebound patients on long-term TAC after organ transplantation to avoid acute rejection risk. Routine clinical TAC detections suffer from expensive instruments and the lag time between sampling and results, making it difficult to apply in resource-limited environment. Rapid and user-friendly point-of-care testing biosensors significantly benefit homebound transplantation patients by avoiding the need for frequent medical visits and reducing meaningless healthcare expenditures. In this study, a simple and porta
