[Immune system of the blowworm Calliphora vicina (diptera, calliphoridae) as a source of medicines].

Study of mechanisms of cellular and humoral immunity of larvae of the blowworm Calliphora vicina has revealed three groups of pharmacologically active substances perspective for use in medicine--alloferons, allostatins, and antimicrobial peptides. Alloferons--the family of peptides of C. vicina stimulating selectively the cytotoxic activity of natural killers of the evolutionary ancient group of immunocompetent cells playing the key role in the system of mammalian antiviral and antitumor immunity. Alloferons are used in medicine for treatment of herpes-viral infections and viral hepatitis B. A

[Eating behavior, eating disorders and obesity].

Over the last 50 years, the nutritional and socioeconomic conditions have dramatically changed in all industrialized countries. As a consequence, there has been a sharp rise in the prevalence of obesity. Simultaneously, social and cultural pressures to maintain a thin body shape have significantly increased. This untoward situation is largely responsible for the steady increase of eating disorders, especially bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder, which are common disorders among normal or overweight individuals. Although the criteria for bulimia nervosa were first described in the DSM-III

Dietary fat and obesity: an epidemiologic perspective.

The observation that dietary fat has an effect on weight gain and the development of obesity that is larger than would be expected on the basis of fat's energy value is mainly experimental. Several methodologic problems limit the interpretation of epidemiologic studies of the association between dietary fat intake and obesity. Among the issues relevant in this context are underreporting of energy and fat intakes, dieting behavior, inadequate control for variables such as energy expenditure, and limited between-subject variation in fat intake in developed countries. Different types of epidemiol

Growth, health, and blood glucose concentrations of calves fed high-glucose or high-fat milk replacers.

The influence of age, carbohydrate-fat ratios of milk replacers, and development of ruminal function on growth, health, and blood glucose concentrations were evaluated in calves. Colostrum-fed, 3-day-old Holstein bull calves were fed to 12 wk on one of three dietary treatments: 1) a high carbohydrate, low fat (60.5% glucose, 9.5% lactose, and 3% lard) milk replacer; 2) a low carbohydrate, high fat (23% glucose, 12.5% lactose, and 30% lard) milk replacer; and 3) weaning at 6 wk of age from high-fat replacer to a standard calf starter. The high fat milk replacer was superior to low fat milk repl

Effect of early nutrition on serum cholesterol levels in adult rats challenged with high fat diet.

Early exposure to cholesterol-enriched, high fat diets has been reported to affect serum cholesterol levels in adult rats. In this study, we investigated the role of dietary fat alone, without cholesterol, by feeding to pregnant rats (from day 18 of gestation) experimental diets containing either high fat (corn oil), low sucrose (HF) or low fat, high sucrose (HS). After birth, mothers and pups were fed the diets until weaning (30 days), when serum cholesterol levels were the same in both groups of pups. Animals were fed stock diet until 7 months. At that time, half the animals from each origin

Inhibition of the pathogenesis of spontaneous hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats by feeding a high fat diet.

Spontaneously hypertensive (Okamoto-Aoki) rats (SHR) and normotensive (Wistar-Kyoto) rats (WKY) were fed a regular or a high fat diet when they were weaned; animals from each group were autopsied at 60, 90, 230, 250, and 180 days of age. SHR fed the high fat diet were cachectic, their pituitary glands were abnormally small, and despite severe hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, and adequate corticosterone levels, their zona glomerulosae were completely depleted of lipid, and they did not develop hypertension (110-115 mm Hg) or any manifestation of atheromatous changes. WKY fed the high fat diet bec

Common questions and misconceptions about diets: what does the scientific evidence really show?

The study of diet and nutrition is often filled with numerous myths and misconceptions. A Google Scholar search of "diets health" yields over 4 million results. This review examines frequently asked questions about diets and dietary habits. These questions include the following: 1) Is a caloric surplus necessary for building skeletal muscle? 2) Is it possible to lose body mass or fat mass without caloric restriction? 3) Is intermittent fasting better than chronic caloric restriction for weight loss? 4) Are there sex differences in the response to fasting? 5) Can diet alone fulfill the macro an

Impact of captivity on gut microbiota, tracheal microbiota and metabolic pathways in wild chipmunks.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the effects of captivity on wild animals is essential, as it helps to improve the physical health and welfare of captive wild animals. The changes in environment, diet and other factors during the captivity may reshape their internal microbiota and affect the body’s metabolism. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we analyzed gut and tracheal microbiota from wild and captive chipmunks, and examined differences in serology, histopathology, fat metabolism, and muscle quality. RESULTS: The dominant bacterial phyla in the gut and tracheal microbiota of chipmunks are Firmicutes

Computational detection, characterization, and clustering of microglial cells in a mouse model of fat-induced postprandial hypothalamic inflammation.

Obesity is associated with brain inflammation, glial reactivity, and immune cells infiltration. Studies in rodents have shown that glial reactivity occurs within 24 h of high-fat diet (HFD) consumption, long before obesity development, and takes place mainly in the hypothalamus (HT), a crucial brain structure for controlling body weight. Understanding more precisely the kinetics of glial activation of two major brain cells (astrocytes and microglia) and their impact on eating behavior could prevent obesity and offer new prospects for therapeutic treatments. To understand the mechanisms pertain

Anti-Obesity Effects and Changes of Fecal Microbiome by Lactic Acid Bacteria from Grains in a High-Fat Diet Mouse Model.

Single three-lactic acid bacterial strains with anti-adipogenic effects in C3H10T1/2 cells and possessing beneficial probiotic properties were administered to mice fed a high-fat diet. Of the three strains, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RP12, which had the lowest weight gain, was utilized for further studies, including a second mouse experiment lasting 10 weeks. Oral administration of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RP12 resulted in reduced body weight gain and epididymal fat mass. Significant reductions in serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose were observed in the group trea

The Checkpoints of Intestinal Fat Absorption in Obesity.

In this chapter, intestinal lipid transport, which plays a central role in fat homeostasis and the development of obesity in addition to the mechanisms of fatty acids and monoacylglycerol absorption in the intestinal lumen and reassembly of these within the enterocyte was described. A part of the resynthesized triglycerides (triacylglycerols; TAG) is repackaged in the intestine to form the hydrophobic core of chylomicrons (CMs). These are delivered as metabolic fuels, essential fatty acids, and other lipid-soluble nutrients, from enterocytes to the peripheral tissues following detachment from

Hypercaloric Diet Promotes Metabolic Disorders and Impaired Kidney Function.

Poor dietary habits such as overconsumption of hypercaloric diets characterized by a high content of fructose and fat are related to metabolic abnormalities development such as obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Accumulating evidence supports the hypothesis that if energy intake gradually exceeds the body's ability to store fat in adipose tissue, the prolonged metabolic imbalance of circulating lipids from endogenous and exogenous sources leads to ectopic fat distribution in the peripheral organs, especially in the heart, liver, and kidney. The kidney is easily affected by dyslipidemia, whic

Childhood dietary intake: Comparison between anorexia nervosa and healthy leanness.

BACKGROUND: The number of adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa is increasing. In addition, an increase in pre-adolescent patients with premenarchal onset has also been recognized. Detection of the disease in childhood and adolescence, however, is not always easy because the symptoms are not characteristic during this period. This study was performed to investigate detection of anorexia nervosa in children/adolescents by comparing energy and nutrient intake between patients with anorexia nervosa and healthy thin persons. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 13 girls aged 14.4 ± 3.5 years wi

Food insecurity as a driver of obesity in humans: The insurance hypothesis.

Integrative explanations of why obesity is more prevalent in some sectors of the human population than others are lacking. Here, we outline and evaluate one candidate explanation, the insurance hypothesis (IH). The IH is rooted in adaptive evolutionary thinking: The function of storing fat is to provide a buffer against shortfall in the food supply. Thus, individuals should store more fat when they receive cues that access to food is uncertain. Applied to humans, this implies that an important proximate driver of obesity should be food insecurity rather than food abundance per se. We integrate

Ritonavir-induced lipoatrophy and dyslipidaemia is reversed by the anti-inflammatory drug leflunomide in a PPAR-γ-dependent manner.

BACKGROUND: The complex interplay between viral infection and virus-activated inflammatory pathways with protease inhibitors (PIs) contributes to the increased risk of developing atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease in HIV-infected patients. Leflunomide is an antirheumatic drug whose administration to HIV-1-infected persons effectively decreases T-cell turnover and activation. In this study we have investigated the effects of leflunomide on dyslipidaemia and lipodistrophy induced by ritonavir in rodents. METHODS: Mice were administered ritonavir (5 mg/kg/day) alone or in combination wi

Anorexia nervosa patients display a deficit in membrane long chain poly-unsaturated fatty acids.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The energy deficit in anorexia nervosa (AN) results from a low energy and fat intake. Data from the literature are at odds about a deficiency in essential fatty acids (EFA), linoleic (LA) and alpha-linolenic (ALA) acid. The aim of the present study was to determine RBC phospholipid FA composition in AN patients, and to relate this FA profile to fat mass and BMI. We postulated that there should not be a deficit in EFA, because AN patients are in negative energy balance, and a significant supply of EFA arises from the lipolysis of AT triglycerides. METHODS: Twenty-two AN wome

Metabolic adaptations to interrupted glycosaminoglycan recycling.

Lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) are metabolic disorders characterized by accumulation of undegraded material. The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are LSDs defined by the storage of glycosaminoglycans. Previously, we hypothesized that cells affected with LSD have increased energy expenditure for biosynthesis because of deficiencies of raw materials sequestered within the lysosome. Thus, LSDs can be characterized as diseases of deficiency as well as overabundance (lysosomal storage). In this study, metabolite analysis identified deficiencies in simple sugars, nucleotides, and lipids in the livers o

Cellulite: a new treatment approach combining subdermal Nd: YAG laser lipolysis and autologous fat transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Cellulite is an alteration of the topography of the skin that occurs in body areas where fat deposition seems to be under the influence of estrogen: mainly the hips, buttocks, thighs, and abdomen. The presence of cellulite is a significant source of patient dissatisfaction. There is currently no cure or consistently effective treatment for cellulite. OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to show that the subdermal application of the neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser combined with autologous fat transplantation is a safe and effective treatment for cellulite. Absence of hypersensitivity to glucocorticoids in antiretroviral-associated lipodystrophy.

OBJECTIVE: The lipodystrophy syndrome, which is associated with the use of antiretroviral drugs in some human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals, bears a striking similarity to the fat redistribution observed in Cushing's disease. Although urinary free cortisol excretion and glucocorticoid receptor binding affinity are not elevated in subjects with lipodystrophy, glucocorticoid action at the cellular level has not been examined in affected individuals. The objective of this study was to determine whether tissue sensitivity to glucocorticoids is increased in subjects with lipodys
