Plasma kallikrein activation and inhibition during typhoid fever.

As an ancillary part of a typhoid fever vaccine study, 10 healthy adult male volunteers (nonimmunized controls) were serially bled 6 days before to 30 days after ingesting 10(5)Salmonella typhi organisms. Five persons developed typhoid fever 6-10 days after challenge, while five remained well. During the febrile illness, significant changes (P < 0.05) in the following hematological parameters were measured: a rise in alpha(1)-antitrypsin antigen concentration and high molecular weight kininogen clotting activity; a progressive decrease of platelet count (to 60% of the predisease state), functi…

Typhoid fever manifesting with haematemesis, hepatitis and haemolysis.

A patient with documented typhoid fever had several uncommon manifestations. These included (1) haematemesis as the presenting feature, (2) hepatocellular jaundice with hepatic encephalopathy, (3) acute intravascular haemolysis and (4) probable disseminated intravascular coagulation. Haematemesis as the presenting feature in typhoid fever has not been reported previously.

Long-term colchicine therapy of familial Mediterranean fever.

Familial Mediterranean fever is a disorder characterized by recurrent fever and polyserositis. Continuous prophylactic colchicine therapy has been effective in suppressing attacks in affected adults. From 30 children with FMF, 14 were selected for colchicine therapy. Eight children continued prophylactic colchicine therapy for 29 months (mean) and experienced a marked decrease in the frequency of attacks. Six other children did not comply with the treatment regimen. Although no deleterious side effects were noted, the safety of long-term colchicine administration in childhood is unknown.

Enteric fever: a clinicopathologic study of 104 cases.

The records of 104 patients with culture-proven enteric fever were reviewed and evaluated as to the clinical signs, laboratory findings, pathologic features and complications of the disease. One patient with fatal disseminated intravascular coagulation and enteric fever is also presented. Fever and bradycardia were the leading clinical signs followed by splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and rose spots. The principal complications of enteric fever included anemia, typhoid hepatitis, relapse and bleeding. Evidence of typhoid hepatitis was present in 30% of the patients tested. The pathology consisted o…

Rocky mountain spotted fever caused by blood transfusion.

Transfusion of 500 ml of blood, contributed by a donor three days before the onset of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and refrigerated for nine days, caused this disease in the recipient. The blood donor died of Rocky Mountain spotted fever after six days; rickettsia were identified in various tissues by immunofluorescence techniques. The recipient of the blood became mildly ill and recovered fully; specific antibiotic treatment was initiated on the fourth day of illness. Diagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever was confirmed in the recipient by positive serologic reactions and isolation of Rick…

[Current biological aspects of typhoid fever (author's transl)].

The biological signs of typhoid fever are studied on the basis of 90 cases collected over a period of 5 years. Average neutrophil granulocyte count before treatment was 5000 with extremes ranging from 1400 to 12180. The development of granulocytopaenia during treatment may be seen not only in patients treated with phenicols but also in those treated with ampicillin or the combination trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole. It was possible to isolate the organism in 88 per cent of cases, either by blood culture (79%) or by stool culture (23%). Antibodies (O and H agglutinins) were found in only 86 per …

Immunological injury in "shipping fever" pneumonia of cattle.

Electron opaque deposits were found on the alveolar capillary walls, luminia of alveolar capillaries, subendothelium and interstitium of four out of 10 Holstein dairy cattle with past shipping histories. The deposits were positive for anti-IgG bovine immunoglobulin by fluorescent antibody technique. Evidence is presented that antigen antibody complexes may play an important role in bovine respiratory diseases.
