Folacin deficiency in malaria endemic areas is not reported other than in severely malnourished children. This is surprising in view of the high incidence in these areas of malaria in pregnancy, with its complications of prematurity and low birth weight, all of which can predispose to folacin deficiency. This paper reports results of folacin and cobalamin activities of blood samples collected from women at parturition and their newborns in a holoendemic area in West Kenya. Evidence is given that Plasmodium falciparum infection has little influence on cord plasma or red cell folacin activities.

Studies of red cell metabolism, erythropoeitin concentration, iron and folate status were made in 48 children with protein-energy malnutrition in Johannesburg (altitude 1800 m). The haematological aspects of life with an ileostomy have been studies in 51 patients, of whom 39 had had ulcerative colitis and 12 had Crohn's disease. So as to assess the effects of lithium carbonate on peripheral leucocyte levels of hepatic cirrhosis patients, 10 cirrhotic patients were studied with less than 4,500 leukocytes per cubic ml and without contraindications for lithium salts that were administered for three weeks at a dose of 90 mg daily. The nutritional status of 82 marihuana-smoking students from two establishments of tertiary education was studied and compared with 63 controls. There was little difference between these two groups of students.
