A postal questionnaire was sent to 307 people, during July 1987. The questionnaire examined public knowledge, attitudes and strategies for education for future planning by the Southern Region Health Services Association. According to the age group those respondents aged 45-59 years scored best in the knowledge section. The younger ages (18-29) years and 30-44 years scored closely, while the elderly scored least. Sputum cultures are not helpful in the immediate management of patients with bacterial pneumonia. Sputum Gram stains may provide a presumptive identification of an etiologic agent; this procedure, however, is insensitive (approximately 50%). Consequently, during the last decade, other more sensitive and specific methods of providing a rapid etiologic diagnosis have been sought. This article discusses data on antigen detection in various body fluids by counterimmunoelectrophoresis and agglutination tests. Results from our own laboratory as well as those reported in the literature are presented.

One hundred seventy-eight previously untreated children with biopsy-proven Hodgkin's disease of clinical Stages I and II were treated and followed between 1965 and 1978. Staging laparotomy was performed in 30 patients. Ninety-four percent of the patients obtained a complete remission; 24 patients have died. Recurrent vomiting in adults is characterized by episodes of forceful vomiting which last several hours and recur at inconstant intervals; patients are free from symptoms between episodes. The series comprised 17 male and 14 female patients whose ages ranged from 14 to 69 years. In 10 patients, the vomiting attacks were accompanied by diarrhoea, and in 10 by abdominal pain. Eight patients suffered from bilious vomiting in childhood, and 11 patients had migraine. Five patients gave a family history of recurrent vomiting. Management necessitated a sympathetic approach and balanced investigation.

Seven different limb malformations types were defined in 544 affected newborns, apparently free from other anomalies, obtained from a series of 297,299 livebirths. These seven malformation types were: polydactyly, limb reduction, brachydactyly, symphalangy, syndactyly and split hand/foot. Chemotherapeutic agents are widely used to combat breast cancer. However, due to their non-selective biodistribution, their usage is associated with severe adverse effects on healthy tissues. In this study, a chitosan-stabilized nanoemulsion (CSNE) was prepared for the codelivery of curcumin (CUR) and methotrexate (MTX).
