Biofilm-producing bacteria associated with wound infections exhibit exceptional drug resistance, leading to an escalation in morbidity, worse clinical outcomes (including delay in the healing process), and an increase in health care cost, burdening the whole system. This study is an attempt to estimate the prevalence and the relationship between the biofilm-forming capacity and multi-drug resistance of wound bacterial isolates. The findings intended to help clinicians, healthcare providers and program planners and to formulate an evidence-based decision-making process, especially in resource-l

Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogen that causes health care-related and community-associated infections. In this study, we provide a novel system that can recognize and kill S. aureus bacteria. The system is specifically based on a combination of the phage display library technique and yeast vacuoles. A phage clone displaying a peptide capable of specific binding to a whole S. aureus cell was selected from a 12-mer phage peptide library. The peptide sequence was SVPLNSWSIFPR. The selected phage's ability to bind specifically with S. aureus was confirmed using an enzyme-linked immunosorb

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is an etiologic agent of nosocomial infections of various localizations. The frequency of infections is a consequence of an increased number of immunocompromised patients, large surgical interventions, long-term hospital care and virulence factors of the bacterium. The use of carbapenems in the treatment of infections caused by P. aeruginosa and other gram-negative bacteria entail an unfortunate consequence of creating resistance to carbapenems. P. aeruginosa exhibits numerous mechanisms of resistance and is singularly problematic for combining intrinsic …

Ticks are obligate hematophagous arthropods that transmit a wide range of pathogens to humans as well as wild and domestic animals. They also harbor a non-pathogenic microbiota, although our previous study has shown that the diverse bacterial microbiome in the midgut of Ixodes ricinus is quantitatively poor and lacks a core. In artificial infections by capillary feeding of ticks with two model bacteria (Gram-positive Micrococcus luteus and Gram-negative Pantoea sp.), rapid clearance of these microbes from the midgut was observed, indicating the presence of active immune mechanisms in this orga

The following results were obtained from the bacteriological evaluations of netilmicin (NTL), a newly developed antibiotic agent, with gentamicin (GM), dibekacin (DKB) and amikacin (AMK) as the controls. (1) NTL demonstrated broad antibacterial spectra against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, but its antibacterial potency against streptococci was not very strong among other Gram-positive bacteria. (2) In terms of distribution of sensitivity of clinically isolated bacterial strains, NTL proved to have antibacterial potency comparable to that of GM and higher potency than that of D…

Eravacycline has been shown to have broad-spectrum activity against Gram-negative bacteria, including carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). We compared the activity of eravacycline with that of tigecycline in CRE isolates cultured from patients at an academic medical centre. Eravacycline was more potent than tigecycline [mean minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratio = 0.76, 95% confidence interval 0.66-0.87]; however, the MIC90 observed for eravacycline was higher than previously reported at 4 μg/mL. Future studies are necessary to elucidate the mechanism driving this difference.

Donovanosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by the Gram-negative bacteria Klebsiella granulomatis, which mainly affects the skin and mucous membranes of the genital, perigenital, and inguinal regions. Also known as venereal granuloma or granuloma inguinale, it is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of the globe and often associated with sexual transmission. We report the case of an 11-year-old female victim of chronic sexual abuse, who was diagnosed with donovanosis and presented a good therapeutic response to doxycycline.

Furbenicillin is a broad-spectrum semisynthetic penicillin with strong antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, three impurities in furbenicillin, including an unknown epimer, were determined. On the basis of a complete analysis of the spectrum (MS, (1)H,(13)C, 2D NMR and CD) and the results of chemical methods, the unknown epimer impurity was identified as 10-epi-furbenicillin (impurity 1). Isolation and structure elucidation of impurity 1 was also reported here for the first time.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a gram-negative bacteria infecting more than 50% of human population. H. pylori selectively colonizes gastric mucosa and represents the major cause of gastroduodenal pathologies, such as gastric ulcer, autoimmune gastritis, gastric cancer and B cell lymphoma of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). In this review interplay between H. pylori and both innate and adaptive immune responses is discussed. The second part of this article presents current knowledge about the relationship between H. pylori infection and neoplasia.
