Incidences of Helicobacter infection in pigs and tracing occupational hazard in pig farmers.

Helicobacter species (spp.) is a gram-negative spiral-shaped motile bacterium that causes gastritis in pigs and also colonizes in the human stomach. The present study assessed the prevalence of Helicobacter spp. in pig gastric mucosa and the stool of pig farmers in Assam, India. A total of 403 stomach samples from pig slaughter points, 74 necropsy samples of pigs from pig farms, and 97 stool samples from pig farmers were collected. Among the pig stomach samples, 43 (20.09%) of those with gastritis showed the presence of Gram-negative, spiral-shaped organisms, while only 3.04% of stomach sample

Antibacterial Activity against Clinical Isolates and In Vivo Efficacy of Coralmycins.

Coralmycins, such as coralmycin A and DH-coralmycin A, have novel molecular skeletons and have been reported to exhibit potent antibacterial activity against standard Gram-positive bacterial strains. Here, the in vitro antibacterial activity against an extensive clinical isolate collection, time-kill kinetics, pharmacokinetics (PK), and in vivo efficacy of coralmycins were studied. Coralmycin A showed potent antibacterial activity with an MIC90 of 1 mg/L against 73 clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci isolates, which was 2-8 times higher tha…

KDP, a Lactobacilli Product from Kimchi, Enhances Mucosal Immunity by Increasing Secretory IgA in Mice and Exhibits Antimicrobial Activity.

The potential of KDP, a lactic acid bacterial strain of Lactobacillus sakei, to enhance the production of mucosal specific immunoglobulin A … ial activity as evidenced by a significant decrease in the growth of 7 samples of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans. KDP's adjuvant effect is shown to be comparable to that of cholera toxin. We conclude that KDP can significantly enhance the intestine's secretory immunity to OVA, as well as act as a potent antioxidant and antimicrobial agent. …

Progress toward the Development of a NEAT Protein Vaccine for Anthrax Disease.

Bacillus anthracis is a sporulating Gram-positive bacterium that is the causative agent of anthrax and a potential weapon of bioterrorism. The U.S.-licensed anthrax vaccine is made from an incompletely characterized culture supernatant of a nonencapsulated, toxigenic strain (anthrax vaccine absorbed [AVA]) whose primary protective component is thought to be protective antigen (PA). AVA is effective in protecting animals and elicits toxin-neutralizing antibodies in humans, but enthusiasm is dampened by its undefined composition, multishot regimen, recommended boosters, and potential for adverse

Structure and heme-binding properties of HemQ (chlorite dismutase-like protein) from Listeria monocytogenes.

Chlorite dismutase-like proteins are structurally closely related to functional chlorite dismutases which are heme b-dependent oxidoreductases capable of reducing chlorite to chloride with simultaneous production of dioxygen. Chlorite dismutase-like proteins are incapable of performing this reaction and their biological role is still under discussion. Recently, members of this large protein family were shown to be involved in heme biosynthesis in Gram-positive bacteria, and thus the protein was renamed HemQ in these organisms. In the present work the structural and heme binding properties of t…

Actinomycosis: etiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and management.

Actinomycosis is a rare chronic disease caused by Actinomyces spp., anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria that normally colonize the human mouth and digestive and genital tracts. Physicians must be aware of typical clinical presentations (such as cervicofacial actinomycosis following dental focus of infection, pelvic actinomycosis in women with an intrauterine device, and pulmonary actinomycosis in smokers with poor dental hygiene), but also that actinomycosis may mimic the malignancy process in various anatomical sites. Bacterial cultures and pathology are the cornerstone of diagnosis, but particu…

Prevalence of CTX-M beta-lactamases in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

CTX-M beta-lactamases were thought to be rare in the United States, but a recent study in Texas showed that up to 70% of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-containing members of the Enterobacteriaceae family were CTX-M positive (J. S. Lewis, M. Herrera, B. Wickes, J. E. Patterson, and J. H. Jorgensen, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 51:4015-4021, 2007). We used PCR to detect CTX-M in all 291 extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant gram-negative bacteria isolated in our laboratory during 2007. Thirty (48%) Escherichia coli isolates, 6 (3%) Klebsiella sp. isolates, and 7 (100%) Proteus mira

Endodontic infections: concepts, paradigms, and perspectives.

Overwhelming evidence indicates that periradicular diseases are infectious disorders. The question now is no longer whether microorganisms are involved in the pathogenesis of such diseases, but which specific microbial species are. The list of microorganisms involved in periradicular diseases keeps expanding and has the potential to become increasingly more accurate during the next few years. Molecular methods have contributed significantly to the knowledge about the microbial species involved. Undoubtedly, a great deal of additional research is needed to define the specific role played by sus

Diabetes mellitus is an independent risk factor for surgical site infection after orthopedic Class I incision surgery: a retrospective cohort study.

Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most devastating complications following orthopedic Class I incision surgery. Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been implicated as an important potential risk factor, but previous studies have yielded conflicting results, largely due to the widespread use of traditional logistic regression for rare event analysis and inadequate control for confounding by surgical procedure type. This retrospective cohort study included 5,845 consecutive patients who underwent orthopedic Class I incision surgery at a tertiary hospital in Nanjing between January 2021 and Dece

Molecular Mechanism of Uptake of Cationic Photoantimicrobial Phthalocyanine across Bacterial Membranes Revealed by Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

Phthalocyanines are aromatic macrocyclic compounds, which are structurally related to porphyrins. In clinical practice, phthalocyanines are used in fluorescence imaging and photodynamic therapy of cancer and noncancer lesions. Certain forms of the substituted polycationic metallophthalocyanines have been previously shown to be active in photodynamic inactivation of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria; one of them is zinc octakis(cholinyl)phthalocyanine (ZnPcChol8+). However, the molecular details of how these compounds translocate across bacterial membranes still remain unclear. In t…

Costs and length of stay associated with antimicrobial resistance in acute kidney injury patients with bloodstream infection.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance negatively impacts on prognosis. Intensive care unit (ICU) patients, and particularly those with acute kidney injury (AKI), are at high risk for developing nosocomial bloodstream infections (BSI) due to multi-drug-resistant strains. Economic implications in terms of costs and length of stay (LOS) attributable to antimicrobial resistance are underevaluated. This study aimed to assess whether microbial susceptibility patterns affect costs and LOS in a well-defined cohort of ICU patients with AKI undergoing renal replacement therapy (RRT) who developed nosoc
