In a remote area of Rhodesia, 4051 rural Africans were examined. Emphasis was placed on examination of the eye although attention was also devoted to any other complaints. The main finding was of a follicular conjunctivitis, two-thirds of these cases being judged to be due to trachoma. Pathology was found more frequently in the younger patients, in whom there was a high incidence of acute purulent conjunctivitis. In older patients cataract and conjunctival growths were found to be common. Many patients had multiple disorders. Malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies were also seen and treated, an

BACKGROUND: While survival rates following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) have improved, long-term psychiatric sequelae-particularly mood disorders and suicidality remain underexplored, especially across demographic subgroups and during periods of heightened societal stress, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
OBJECTIVE: To assess decade-long trends (2013-2024) in the incidence of suicide attempts, depression, and bipolar disorder following AMI, and to examine demographic disparities and the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on these outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was cond

During recent decades, the increasing use of opioids for chronic non-cancer pain has raised concerns regarding tolerance, addiction, and importantly cognitive dysfunction. Current research suggests that the somatotrophic axis could play an important role in cognitive function. Administration of growth hormone (GH) to GH-deficient humans and experimental animals has been shown to result in significant improvements in cognitive capacity. In this report, a patient with cognitive disabilities resulting from chronic treatment with opioids for neuropathic pain received recombinant human growth hormo

The effect of HT042, a blend of three herbal extracts, on longitudinal bone growth was investigated in short- and long-term rat models. In the short-term model, we divided female Sprague-Dawley rats (3 weeks old) into six groups, according to treatment: vehicle, HT042 (100 mg/kg), Phlomis umbrosa (100 mg/kg), Astragalus membranaceus (100 mg/kg), and Eleutherococcus senticosus (100 mg/kg) were administered twice daily, and recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) (1 IU) was subcutaneously injected once daily. Treatments were maintained for 4 days in each case. On day 3, tetracycline (20 mg/kg) w

Brain growth retardation is a major feature of the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) have been shown to exert significant metabolic and growth-promoting effects. Previously, we showed that circulating levels of IGF-I as well as hepatic gene expression of both IGFs were decreased in newborn offspring of rats fed ethanol during pregnancy. This study investigated the effects of maternal ethanol ingestion on fetal rat brain growth and on levels of IGF-I and IGF-II, as well as their mRNAs, in fetal brain. IGF-binding protein (IGFBP) levels also were determ

Substance use disorder and opioid use disorder in pregnancy have serious maternal and neonatal sequelae, including neonatal abstinence syndrome, preterm labor, and intrauterine growth restriction. Despite this, there are limited resources and guidelines to help clinicians support these mothers in all practice settings. The primary aim of this review will be to provide evidence-based clinical, practitioner, and sociopolitical recommendations for obstetric teams to implement. A holistic approach that includes multidisciplinary team-based care, a stepwise approach to chronic pain management, trea

BACKGROUND: Sotos syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder, whereas attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition. This report aimed to summarize the clinical and genetic features of a pediatric case of Soros syndrome and ADHD in a child exhibiting precocious puberty.
CASE SUMMARY: The patient presented with accelerated growth and advanced skeletal maturation; however, she lacked any distinct facial characteristics related to specific genetic disorders. Genetic analyses revealed a paternally inherited heterozygous synonymous mutation [c.4605C>T (p.Arg1535

Trichothiodystrophy (TTD) is a rare genetic disorder with a high mortality rate among pediatric patients, primarily as a result of related infections. Its defining clinical feature is brittle, dry hair, with broken hair shafts revealing "tiger-tail banding". Other common characteristics include photosensitivity, scaly skin and stunted growth. The disorder's rarity and variety of symptoms pose diagnostic challenges, yet early diagnosis and treatment can improve a patient's overall health and quality of life. The purpose of this report is to describe the case of an underweight five-year-old boy

The proposed symptoms for Neurobehavioral Disorder Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE) were evaluated in children who participated in the Collaboration on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Prevalence study. Children "at-risk" for ND-PAE (n = 204) were contrasted to children with no prenatal alcohol exposure, alcohol-related dysmorphia or growth deficits (n = 908). Symptoms were defined based on neuropsychological testing using two diagnostic threshold levels (1.0 and 1.5 STD). Individuals at risk for ND-PAE had higher endorsement rates of the self-regulation and adaptive impairme

SUMMARY: Cantu syndrome, or hypertrichotic osteochondrodysplasia, is a rare, autosomal dominant genetically heterogeneous disorder. It is characterized by hypertrichosis, cardiac and skeletal anomalies and distinctive coarse facial features. We report a case where slowed growth velocity at 13 years led to identification of multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies. This adds to other reports of pituitary abnormalities in this condition and supports inclusion of endocrine monitoring in the clinical surveillance of patients with Cantu syndrome.
LEARNING POINTS: Cantu syndrome is a rare genetic di

OBJECTIVE: A finding consistent with the transdiagnostic approach to eating disorders is that about half of those with restricting anorexia nervosa (AN) eventually undergo a transition to the binge/purge (BP) subtype or to bulimia nervosa. Given evidence that individuals with bulimic symptoms exhibit elevated weights premorbidly, we tested the hypothesis that among those with AN, highest premorbid BMI would predict which individuals with AN would develop AN-BP.
METHOD: The current study used longitudinal data from a community sample of adolescents with AN in Sweden. Premorbid weights were obt

BACKGROUND: Maternal uniparental disomy 14 is a rare genetic disorder in which both chromosomes 14 are maternally inherited. The disorder is characterised by neonatal hypotonia and feeding difficulties, intrauterine or later growth retardation, truncal obesity and precocious puberty. During the neonatal period its clinical phenotype shows great similarities with that of Prader-Willi syndrome.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe two patients with dysmaturity, neonatal hypotonia and feeding difficulties who initially showed clinical signs of Prader-Willi syndrome. However, molecular testing for this

Alagille syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with characteristic findings of paucity of intrahepatic bile ducts, congenital heart disease, and vertebral, ocular, and renal abnormalities. We present a unique autopsy case of an 18-year-old female with Alagille syndrome and splenic hamartomas. Autopsy findings included growth restriction, Tetralogy of Fallot, paucity of intrahepatic bile ducts, end-stage renal disease with mesangiolipidosis, and splenomegaly with two well-circumscribed, splenic tumors. Histologic findings of the splenic tumors revealed disorganized vascular channels li

The size of an infant at birth, a measure of gestational growth, has been recognized for many years as a biomarker of future risk of morbidity. Both being born small for gestational age (SGA) and being born large for gestational age (LGA), are associated with increased rates of obesity and metabolic disorder, as well as a number of mental disorders including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism, anxiety, and depression. The common risks raise the question of what neurobiological mechanisms are altered in SGA and LGA offspring. Here we review recent findings allowing for direct comp

Enchondromas are common intraosseous usually benign cartilaginous tumors that develop in close proximity to growth plate cartilage. Genochondromatosis is a familial skeletal condition with autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. Genochondromatosis type I is a skeletal disorder characterized by symmetrical chondromatosis with characteristic localization: clavicle, upper end of humerus, and lower end of femur. The condition shows a benign course and is clearly different from metachondromatosis, generalized enchondromatosis, and spondyloenchondrodysplasia. In contrast, genochondromatosis type II

Preeclampsia is a disorder that continues to exact a significant toll with respect to maternal morbidity and mortality as well as fetal wastage. Furthermore, the treatment of this disorder has not changed significantly in 50 years and is unsatisfactory. The use of diuretics in this syndrome is controversial because there is a concern related to potential baleful effects of volume contraction leading to a possible further decrement in the perfusion of the maternal-fetal unit. Metolazone is a diuretic/antihypertensive agent, which has a therapeutic effect on blood pressure (BP) in human essentia

BACKGROUND: Isolated growth hormone deficiency type II (IGHD II) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by a GH1 gene variant resulting in a significant reduction in growth hormone (GH) secretion and a subsequent decrease of plasma insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels and eventual growth impairment.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify causative variants in six Chinese families with IGHD II, exploring both clinical and genetic characteristics.
METHODS: Detailed clinical data, including clinical presentations, physical charateristics, medical and family histories, as well a

BACKGROUND: Since the end of 2019, Corona Virus Disease 2019, also known as COVID-19, has broken out in various countries. However, the change of China's COVID-19 prevention and control policy and the sharp increase in the number of infected people are making the teenagers have post-traumatic reactions. Negative post-traumatic reactions include: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety. Positive post-traumatic reaction mainly refers to post-traumatic growth (PTG). The purpose of this study is to explore the post-traumatic reaction, which refers to PTSD, depression, anxiety an
