Muscle strength is associated with fracture risk obtained by fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) in women with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Women with breast cancer are at risk for the development of sarcopenia and occurrence of fractures. The initial and periodic screening of these conditions can prevent the risks of disability, poor quality of life, and death. The present study investigated the association between sarcopenia phenotypes and fracture risk, assessed by the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) in women with breast cancer. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. It included women aged between 40 and 80 years, diagnosed with Luminal subtype breast cancer, with time of diagnosis ≤ 12 months, who had not started en

Irreducible dislocation of the thumb interphalangeal joint due to displaced flexor pollicis longus tendon: case report and new reduction technique.

Dislocation of the thumb interphalangeal (IP) joint is uncommon because of the inherent stability of the joint. Cases in which reduction was blocked by the volar plate, the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon, the sesamoid bone, and an osteochondral fragment have been described in the literature. This article reports a case of closed thumb IP joint dislocation caused by the displacement of the FPL tendon. A new percutaneous reduction technique for this injury will also be presented. A 63-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with an obvious thumb deformity. Radiographs confirmed dorsa

An incompletely penetrant novel MAFB (p.Ser56Phe) variant in autosomal dominant multicentric carpotarsal osteolysis syndrome.

Multicentric carpotarsal osteolysis syndrome (MCTO) is a rare autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia usually presenting in early childhood with variable phenotypic features and course. Clinical manifestations comprise aggressive osteolysis of the carpal and tarsal bones in particular, an often progressive nephropathy leading to end-stage renal disease, craniofacial anomalies and mental impairment. Recently, heterozygous missense mutations in the V-maf musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene homolog B (avian) (MAFB) gene have been causally related to MCTO patients in 13 unrelated families inves

Age-related hyperkyphosis, independent of spinal osteoporosis, is associated with impaired mobility in older community-dwelling women.

UNLABELLED: While many assume hyperkyphosis reflects underlying spinal osteoporosis and vertebral fractures, our results suggest hyperkyphosis is independently associated with decreased mobility. Hyperyphosis is associated with slower Timed Up and Go performance times and may be a useful clinical marker signaling the need for evaluation of vertebral fracture and falling risk. INTRODUCTION: While multiple studies have demonstrated negative effects of hyperkyphosis on physical function, none have disentangled the relationship between hyperkyphosis, impaired function, and underlying spinal osteo

Forensic age estimation of living individuals: a retrospective analysis.

In recent years, skeletal age determination has become increasingly important in criminal investigations for determining the age of living individuals. To increase diagnostic accuracy, a physical examination, an X-ray examination of the left hand, as well as a dental examination including the determination of the dental status and an X-ray of the dentition should always be performed. In this work, the authors analyze a sample of 52 illegal immigrants who came under their observation in the period from May 1989 to September 2007. A statistical analysis of the results of dental and skeletal age

Outcome of distal radius fractures in relation to bone mineral density.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether osteoporosis influenced the clinical results of distal radius fractures in women above the age of 40 years. Forty patients underwent bone mineral densitometry of the distal forearm, hip and lumbar spine. Radiographs of both wrists were taken at the time of fracture healing and the difference in ulnar variance, palmar tilt and radial inclination with the contralateral wrist was measured. Wrist mobility, grip strength and pain relief were determined in 35 patients with a follow-up of more than one year. We found that the clinical results correla

Auxology is a valuable instrument for the clinical diagnosis of SHOX haploinsufficiency in school-age children with unexplained short stature.

SHOX (short stature homeobox-containing gene) mutations causing haploinsufficiency have been reported in some individuals with idiopathic short stature and in many patients with Leri-Weill-dyschondrosteosis. Around 80% of SHOX mutations are complete gene deletions, whereas diverse point mutations account for the rest. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of SHOX mutations in children with idiopathic short stature and to give an unbiased characterization of the haploinsufficiency phenotype of such children. We recruited 140 children (61 girls), in our clinic, with idiopathic sho

Low bone mass in glycogen storage disease type 1 is associated with reduced muscle force and poor metabolic control.

OBJECTIVE: To study the relation between muscle force, bone mass, and metabolic control in patients with glycogen storage disease type (GSD 1). STUDY DESIGN: Distal radius bone mass and density were evaluated in 19 patients with GSD 1 (15 GSD 1a, 4 GSD 1b) by means of peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Grip force was quantified with a dynamometer. RESULTS: Height, weight, bone mass, and grip force were significantly decreased in the patients with GSD 1a, mainly as the result of low values in the poorly controlled subgroup. Boys had lower bone mass than girls. Patients with GSD 1b h

Does direct measurement of forearm mixed nerve conduction velocity reflect actual nerve conduction velocity through the carpal tunnel?

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether forearm (wrist-elbow) mixed nerve conduction velocity (W-Emix) represents the actual nerve conduction velocity (CV) of nerve fibers passing through the carpal tunnel. BACKGROUND: W-Emix is presumed to reflect the actual forearm CV through the carpal tunnel. However, it has been argued that W-Emix chiefly originates from the nerve fibers passing outside the carpal tunnel. Therefore, the direct measurement of W-Emix cannot be used to assess retrograde axonal atrophy in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty pati
