Preferred musical attribute dimensions underlie individual differences in music-induced analgesia.

Music-induced analgesia (MIA) is a phenomenon that describes a situation in which listening to music influences pain perception. The heterogeneity of music used in MIA studies leads to a problem of a specific effect for an unspecified stimulus. To address this, we use a previously established model of musical preferences that categorizes the multidimensional sonic space of music into three basic dimensions: arousal, valence and depth. Participants entered an experimental pain stimulation while listening to compilations of short musical excerpts characteristic of each of the three attribute dim

Measuring the Feasibility and Effectiveness of an Individualized Exercise Program Delivered Virtually to Cancer Survivors.

In the spring of 2020, we faced a global pandemic that resulted in social distancing limitations not previously experienced, forcing practitioners to adapt exercise programming to a virtual model. The purpose of this investigation was to measure the effectiveness of a virtual exercise oncology program in 491 participants undergoing antineoplastic therapy between March and June 2020. Each session was completed virtually with a certified exercise oncology trainer. Fitness and psychological parameters were measured preexercise and postexercise intervention. Overall, participants completed 4949 of

Back to the future: optimised microwell culture of individual human preimplantation stage embryos.

Although in vitro culture of human embryos is a crucial step in assisted reproduction, the lack of focused research hampers worldwide standardisation and consistent outcomes. Only 1.2% of research papers published in five leading journals in human reproduction in 2019 focused on in vitro culture conditions, creating the impression that the optimisation process has approached its limits. On the other hand, in vitro culture of mammalian embryos is based on old principles, while there is no consensus on basic issues as density, time, medium change, gas atmosphere and small technical details inclu

Ten golden rules for individualized mechanical ventilation in acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Considerable progress has been made over the last decades in the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Mechanical ventilation(MV) remains the cornerstone of supportive therapy for ARDS. Lung-protective MV minimizes the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) and improves survival. Several parameters contribute to the risk of VILI and require careful setting including tidal volume (VT), plateau pressure (Pplat), driving pressure (ΔP), positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), and respiratory rate. Measurement of energy and mechanical power allows quantification of the r

The limited effect of neural stimulation on visual attention and social cognition in individuals with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Research demonstrates a relationship between faulty visual attention and poorer social cognition in schizophrenia. One potential explanatory model suggests abnormal neuromodulation in specific neural networks may result in reduced attention to socially important cues, leading to poorer understanding of another's emotional state or intentions. OBJECTIVE: The current study experimentally manipulated neural networks using tDCS to examine this potential causal mechanism. The primary aim was to determine whether stimulation to the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) improves visual a

Individual and environmental factors associated with defecation while lying down in dairy cows.

Cows typically defecate while standing. Freestalls are designed to position standing cows such that their feces fall into the alley. Cows sometimes defecate while lying down, increasing the risk that feces contaminate the stall surface. We conducted 2 studies investigating cow-level and environmental factors associated with defecating while recumbent. In experiment 1, we hypothesized that conditions making it more difficult for cows to stand up (including greater age, high body weight, pregnancy, and lameness) would increase the risk of this behavior. We followed 92 cows for 12 d, scanning sta

Childhood trauma and cognitive functioning in individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis.

Evidence suggests that early trauma may have a negative effect on cognitive functioning in individuals with psychosis, yet the relationship between childhood trauma and cognition among those at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis remains unexplored. Our sample consisted of 626 CHR children and 279 healthy controls who were recruited as part of the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study 2. Childhood trauma up to the age of 16 (psychological, physical, and sexual abuse, emotional neglect, and bullying) was assessed by using the Childhood Trauma and Abuse Scale. Multiple domains of cogniti

Thermal dependence and individual variation in tonic immobility varies between sympatric amphibians.

Tonic immobility (TI) is an important antipredator response employed by prey in the last stages of a predation sequence. Evolution by natural selection assumes consistent individual variation (repeatability) in this trait. In ectotherms, which experience variable body temperatures, TI should be repeatable over a thermal gradient to be targeted by natural selection; however, information on thermal repeatability of this trait is missing. We examined thermal repeatability of TI in juveniles of two sympatric amphibians, smooth (Lissotriton vulgaris) and alpine (Ichthyosaura alpestris) newts. Both

Corneal sub-basal nerve plexus microneuromas in individuals with and without dry eye.

BACKGROUND/AIM: An objective marker is needed to detect when corneal nerve abnormalities underlie neuropathic corneal pain (NCP), as symptoms often overlap with those of dry eye (DE). This study evaluated microneuroma (MN) frequency in various populations and investigated relationships between MN presence and DE clinical features in individuals with DE symptoms but without a history of refractive surgery, in order to eliminate refractive surgery as a potential confounder of nerve abnormalities. METHODS: This was a retrospective study that included individuals with and without DE symptoms who

Sleep-Related Problems in Night Shift Nurses: Towards an Individualized Interventional Practice.

Rotating shifts (mostly 8- or 12-h) are common among nurses to ensure continuity of care. This scheduling system encompasses several adverse health and performance consequences. One of the most injurious effects of night-time shift work is the deterioration of sleep patterns due to both circadian rhythm disruption and increased sleep homeostatic pressure. Sleep problems lead to secondary effects on other aspects of wellbeing and cognitive functioning, increasing the risk of errors and workplace accidents. A wide range of interventions has been proposed to improve the sleep quality of nurses an

Neighborhood and Individual Socioeconomic Disadvantage and Survival Among Patients With Nonmetastatic Common Cancers.

IMPORTANCE: Disadvantaged neighborhood-level and individual-level socioeconomic status (SES) have each been associated with suboptimal cancer care and inferior outcomes. However, independent or synergistic associations between neighborhood and individual socioeconomic disadvantage have not been fully examined, and prior studies using simplistic neighborhood SES measures may not comprehensively assess multiple aspects of neighborhood SES. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations of neighborhood SES (using a validated comprehensive composite measure) and individual SES with survival among pat

Speech discrimination in infants at family risk of dyslexia: Group and individual-based analyses.

Deficiencies in discriminating and identifying speech sounds have been widely attested in individuals with dyslexia as well as in young children at family risk (FR) of dyslexia. A speech perception deficit has been hypothesized to be causally related to reading and spelling difficulties. So far, however, early speech perception of FR infants has not been assessed at different ages within a single experimental design. Furthermore, a combination of group- and individual-based analyses has not been made. In this cross-sectional study, vowel discrimination of 6-, 8-, and 10-month-old Dutch FR infa

Is orthographic knowledge a strength or a weakness in individuals with dyslexia? Evidence from a meta-analysis.

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine if individuals with dyslexia (DYS) have a deficit in orthographic knowledge. We reviewed a total of 68 studies published between January 1990 and December 2019, representing a total of 7215 participants. There were 80 independent samples in the chronological-age (CA)-DYS comparison and 33 independent samples in the comparison between DYS and reading-level (RL) controls. A random-effects model analysis revealed a large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.17) for the CA-DYS comparison and a small effect size (Cohen's d = 0.18) for the RL-DYS comparison. In

Factors influencing the protective behavior of individuals during COVID-19: a transnational survey.

To slow the spread of infectious disease, it is crucial to understand the engagement of protective behavior among individuals. The purpose of this study was to systematically examine individuals' protective behaviors and the associated factors across countries during COVID-19. This causal-comparative study used a self-developed online survey to assess individuals' level of engagement with six protective behaviors. Analysis of variance and McNemar's test were employed for data analysis. Three hundred and eighty-four responses were analyzed. The majority of participants lived in three areas: Tai

Reading Specific Small Saccades Predict Individual Phonemic Awareness and Reading Speed.

Small fixational eye-movements are a fundamental aspect of vision and thought to reflect fine shifts in covert attention during active viewing. While the perceptual benefits of these small eye movements have been demonstrated during a wide range of experimental tasks including during free viewing, their function during reading remains surprisingly unclear. Previous research demonstrated that readers with increased microsaccade rates displayed longer reading speeds. To what extent increased fixational eye movements are, however, specific to reading and might be indicative of reading skill defic
