In view of the established potential of reagent sticks for detecting haematuria, a pilot survey to validate their use in the diagnosis of urinary schistosomiasis in an urban setting was done at Kinyerezi primary school of Ilala district in Dar es salaam. From 404 pupils screened for the disease, 273 were positive for the eggs by microscopy (filtration method), giving a prevalence of 67.6% and 253 (92.6%) of those who were positive by microscopy were also positive for haematuria by reagent sticks. We have ascertained the extent to which risk factors for HIV infection may escape detection by standard history-taking procedures in an antenatal clinic. This study was based on 1264 women from a multi-ethnic population in an inner London health district (City and Hackney). BACKGROUND: Mammographic images from women with a high proportion of epithelial and stromal breast tissues are described as showing high-density parenchymal patterns. Most past studies that noted an increase in breast cancer risk associated with mammographic parenchymal patterns showing high density either 1) lacked information on other breast cancer risk factors, 2) were too small, or 3) included insufficient follow-up time to adequately resolve persisting doubts whether mammographic features are "independent" measures of breast cancer risk and not a detection artifact.

Research on the genetic, molecular genetic, clinical features, and natural history of HNPCC has shown tremendous progress and evolution during the past 25 years. Specifically, HNPCC's autosomal dominant mode of genetic transmission has now been documented through linkage studies of the gene at 2p (MSH2) and at 3p (MLH1) with the cloning of these genes. Also, the tumor spectrum has increased, which now, in addition to carcinoma of the colon, endometrium, stomach, and ovary, includes transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter and renal pelvis, and adenocarcinomas of the small bowel and pancreas.

This is a retrospective review of 185 short children who were tested for growth hormone (GH) secretion using the L-dopa-propranolol provocative test. One hundred and thirty-three children were deemed to have passed the screening test when a GH concentration of greater than 15 miu/L was elicited after stimulation. All blood donors in Scotland who were found to be infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the first 6 months of routine testing of all donations for anti-HCV were contacted. Maternal serum unconjugated oestriol (uE3) was measured in 15,375 pregnancies during 2 years of second-trimester risk assessment for Down syndrome using biochemical markers. Very low levels of uE3 (< 0.1 MOM) were detected in 22 serum samples (0.14 per cent).
