BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis affects almost 6% of the world population. Topical azoles and systemic antifungal agents are of low efficacy and can have undesirable side effects. An effective, non-invasive therapy for onychomycosis is an unmet clinical need.
OBJECTIVE: Determine the efficacy threshold of non-thermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) to treat onychomycosis in an in vitro model.
METHODS: A novel toe/nail-plate model using cadaver nails and agarose media inoculated with Candida albicans was exposed to a range of NTAP doses.
RESULTS: Direct exposure of C albicans and Trichophyton mentagroph

Because of their similar clinical presentation, discrimination between nail psoriasis and onychomycosis often is difficult. We aim to investigate the actual frequency of onychomycosis in psoriatic patients and to compare it between psoriatic and non-psoriatic patients. This retrospective study included a total of 9281 patients, referring to our Mycology Laboratory from September 2003 to May 2018. The patients are divided into two groups: PsoGroup (patients with psoriasis) and non-PsoGroup (non-psoriatic patient). Direct microscopic examination with 20% KOH and culture was carried out in both g

BACKGROUND: Lanoconazole (LCZ) is a topical antifungal agent clinically used to treat fungal infections such as tinea pedis. LCZ has not only antifungal effects but also anti-inflammatory effects, which have the potential to provide additional clinical benefits. However, the characteristic features of the inhibitory effects of LCZ on skin inflammation remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the inhibitory effects of topical application of LCZ, and compared the effects of LCZ with those of other antifungal agents including liranaftate, terbinafine and amorolfine.
METHODS: Each antifungal agen

OBJECTIVE: Tinea manuum is considered in Italy as an uncommon infection, although no recent epidemiological data are available.
METHODS: In the period 2000-2018, we observed in the metropolitan area of Milan 18 patients with mycologically tinea manuum.
RESULTS: The infection was monolateral in all patients and characterised by erythema and scaling; in two patients, each vesicles and pustules were present. Two patients had also onychomycosis of one fingernail. No cases of simultaneous tinea pedis were observed. As far as the job of these patients is concerned, seven of them were masseurs, thr

Cryptococcus neoformans causes life-threatening meningoencephalitis, particularly in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive individuals with low CD4 levels (<100 cells/μL). Although the burden of cryptococcal meningoencephalitis (CM) in Turkey is low (0.13 cases per 100 000 persons), asymptomatic individuals at risk of cryptococcosis should be screened for antigenemia to prevent the disease and/or promote early CM diagnosis. A lateral flow assay (LFA) is used to detect Cryptococcus antigen (CrAg) in cerebrospinal fluid and serum. We determined Cryptococcus antigenemia prevalence in serum

Aspergillosis in falcons may be associated with high mortality and difficulties in clinical and laboratory diagnosis. We previously cloned an immunogenic protein, Afmp1p, in Aspergillus fumigatus and showed that anti-Afmp1p antibodies were present in human patients with A. fumigatus infections. In this study, we hypothesise that a similar Afmp1p-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) could be applied to serodiagnose falcon aspergillosis. A specific polyclonal antibody was first generated to detect falcon serum IgY. Horseradish peroxidase-conjugate of this antibody was then used to mea

The discipline of medical mycology has become increasingly relevant in the face of the rising incidence of invasive fungal infections (IFI), which pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for contemporary medical practice. While firmly established in developed countries, medical mycology remains obscure in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). With a teeming vulnerable populace and an incidence rate of 11.8%, Nigeria has one of the highest estimated burdens of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in the world. Regardless, the scourge of IFIs has remained silent due to a combination of

BACKGROUND: The incidence of fungal keratitis has increased in recent years. While the epidemiology and clinical roles of various Candida and Fusarium species have been relatively well-identified in infections of the eye, data regarding keratitis caused by Aspergillus species are scant. Accurate and rapid diagnosis is important for successful management of this infection.
OBJECTIVES: To present the first molecular epidemiological data from Mexico during a 4-year period of cases admitted with Aspergillus keratitis to a tertiary care eye institution in Mexico City.

Isavuconazole is a novel antifungal drug approved for the treatment of adults with invasive aspergillosis and mucormycosis. While azoles as a class effect are known to prolong QTc interval, clinical trials have shown that isavuconazole administration may cause shortening in a dose-related manner. Here, we assessed the effects of isavuconazole on the length of QTc interval. The objective of the study was to describe changes in the QTc interval induced by isavuconazole treatment. A total of 26 adult patients from 7 hospitals were included. Patients received isavuconazole for the treatment of inv

Vitamin D deficiency is believed to be a pathogenetic factor in patients with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and cystic fibrosis. Whether vitamin D deficiency is also prevalent in ABPA complicating asthma, remains unknown. Herein, we evaluated vitamin D levels in asthmatic patients with and without ABPA. In a prospective study, plasma vitamin D (25[OH]D) levels were measured in consecutive subjects with asthma (n = 75), ABPA (n = 158) and healthy volunteers (n = 50). Vitamin D levels <20 ng/mL were considered as vitamin D deficiency. There was no difference in mean (95% CI) vit

The optimal approach to treat invasive fungal disease (IFD) caused by more than one fungal species is unknown. We documented the efficacy and safety of isavuconazole for treatment of IFDs caused by more than one fungal species. VITAL was a single-arm, international, open-label study evaluating the efficacy and safety of isavuconazole (200 mg orally or intravenously every 8 hours for 48 hours, then once daily) for treatment of rare IFDs. The primary outcome was the overall response at Day 42; key secondary outcomes were overall responses at Day 84 and end of treatment (EOT), mortality at Days 4
