[Correlation of morphological criteria with the rate of growth in cancer of the breast].

Prognosis of carcinoma of the breast depends on a number of factors. Besides tumour staging, these parameters include the number of axillary lymph nodes with metastatic growths, the status of the hormonal receptors, and the histological type of the tumour, especially the tumour grading and the rate of growth correlated therewith. The first few of these criteria are relatively easy to determine. The tumour duplication time has so far been determined only by means of serial mammographies. Only few studies have been conducted on the correlation of the morphological parameters connected with the d

[Cytological characteristics of severe dysplasia, intraepithelial cancer and stage IA cancer of the cervix uteri based on multivariate analysis (joint study)].

The investigation was concerned with a computer statistical analysis of 40 cytological indexes of severe dysplasia, intraepithelial cancer and stage IA carcinoma of cervix uteri. It was found that, irrespective of stage, of major importance are such factors as atypia of cells and nuclei, cell division rate, keratinization involving the formation of specific structures, increasing atypia of cells accompanied by high-rate division and reduction in variety of cell functions.

Efferent vascular invasion and the mean nuclear area of axillary nodal tumour cells in breast cancer.

The presence of tumour cells of high mean nuclear area (MNA) in axillary nodal metastases from breast carcinoma is shown to be related to the finding of tumour cells in the efferent nodal vessels. In cases without efferent vascular invasion (EVI) the MNA was on average lower. EVI positivity combined with a high MNA is associated with a poor prognosis. However, a subgroup was identified, i.e. the MNA 1, with the smallest nuclei, in which prognosis approached that in the EVI negative. In the latter the differences related to MNA groups were not statistically significant.

CEA positivity in sera and breast tumor tissues obtained from the same patients.

It is well known that the concentration of serum CEA correlates best with colorectal carcinomas but less well with other solid tumors. The aim of the present study was to elucidate further the poor relationship between confirmed primary mammary carcinomas and CEA serum levels, 108 of these tumors have hence been studied for their tissular CEA positivity and the results obtained were compared with the CEA serum values found preoperatively in the same patients. Techniques employed were the indirect immunoperoxydase method for the histologic studies and the enzymoimmuno-assay for the serum measur

[Bronchus cancer - surgery].

Of 9,000 patients with bronchus carcinoma observed during 1958-1980, 3.041 (33%) underwent resection. Although in principle the standard operations are lobectomy for the peripheral and bilobectomy or pneumonectomy for the central carcinoma, parenchyma-saving operations such as clamping or segmental resection or main bronchus resection are justified under certain conditions; however, here all regional lymph nodes have to be removed again. We consider the surgical indication of small-celled carcinoma like any other form of bronchus carcinoma. For stage I, the 5-year survival chance is 40% - 50%,

[Aspects for hormone therapy in prostate cancer].

At present the antiandrogenic hormone therapy is a main form of the treatment of the carcinoma of the prostate. It is a palliative treatment. With reference to the testosterone metabolism the extra- and intraprostatic effect is explained. The present state of the hormone receptor research is critically explained, and by reason of the still uncertain prognosis of the effectiveness of the hormone treatment the necessity of a curative therapy (radical operation, radiotherapy with curative aim) is evident.

Carcinoma of the hypopharynx--a five year follow-up.

This is a study of 339 patients with carcinoma of the hypopharynx, seen in Toronto from 1960-72. Patients were grouped according to the U.I.C.C., T.M.N. classification but a modified staging method was employed since there is no generally accepted procedure for stage-grouping at the present time. Patients treated by primary radiation were compared to a group treated by combined therapy (radiation followed by surgery). The results show that the overall crude survival of all hypopharyngeal lesions was approximately 20 per cent. A high percentage of patients had advanced lesions at first presenta

Recurrent Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma: Two Cases Emphasizing the Role of Follow-Up and Staging in Surgical Planning.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, benign but locally aggressive vascular tumor affecting adolescent males. While endoscopic resection with preoperative embolization remains the treatment of choice, recurrence remains a challenge, often driven by incomplete excision or poor follow-up adherence. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of recurrent JNA in adolescent males, each highlighting a different modifiable risk factor for recurrence. Case 1 involved a 21-year-old with prior resection and poor postoperative follow-up, who re-presented with Radkowski Stage III

The clinical utility of molecular residual disease testing in early-stage breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the most commonly-diagnosed malignancy among women. Currently, radiologic imaging is indicated for defined surveillance periods and to assess or corroborate patient symptomatology. More recently, the advent of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) assays has conferred a potential enhancement in disease monitoring via the evaluation of molecular residual disease (MRD). AREAS COVERED: Studies have shown that MRD testing reportedly eventuates in a lead-time predictive benefit in diagnosing progressive disease compared to traditional assessment. In particular, the Signatera

Landscape of Allele-Specific Expression in Prostate Cancer Reveals Recurrent, Stage-Specific Events in AR Signaling and Resistance Pathways.

UNLABELLED: The effects of cis-regulatory alterations in prostate cancer are insufficiently characterized, presenting an opportunity to discover driver genes and therapeutic targets. To comprehensively study these effects, we identify genes undergoing allele-specific expression (ASE) in localized prostate cancer and metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) samples. By defining recurrent ASE events across prostate tissue and tumor-enriched ASE, we develop CASEDI, a computational framework for prioritizing cancer drivers by integrating ASE and clinical data. CASEDI reveals genes s

Neoadjuvant Chemohormonal Therapy for Patients With Very-high Risk Localized Prostate Cancer in Clinical Stages T2 and T3a.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The impact of neoadjuvant chemohormonal therapy (NCHT) on biochemical recurrence-free survival (BRFS) in patients with very-high risk localized prostate cancer remains uncertain, particularly because previous studies have included heterogeneous populations with locally advanced disease. This retrospective study evaluated the clinical significance of NCHT in patients with strictly defined T2-T3a very-high risk disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 49 patients treated between 2017 and 2024 were analyzed; 25 received NCHT consisting of androgen deprivation therapy and estramu

Circulating tumor DNA in urothelial cancer as an intermediate disease state between localized and advanced stages: Moving from risk factors to micrometastatic disease in the perioperative setting.

Urothelial carcinoma, especially muscle-invasive bladder cancer, presents a high risk of recurrence despite curative-intent surgery and perioperative therapies. A major clinical challenge remains the early identification of micrometastatic disease, undetectable with conventional imaging. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), a minimally invasive biomarker, is emerging as a transformative tool for detecting minimal residual disease, allowing for earlier intervention and more tailored and efficacious treatment strategies. This review explores the evolving role of ctDNA in urothelial carcinoma, particul

Evolution of stage at diagnosis of breast cancer over three consecutive 5-year periods in Guinea: Experience from a tertiary center.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. This study aimed to analyze changes in the stage at diagnosis of breast cancer across three five-year periods in a tertiary center in Guinea. METHODS: A retrospective observational descriptive and analytical study was conducted at Donka University Hospital between January 2009 and December 2023. Bivariate and multivariable analyses (Firth penalized logistic regression) were performed to identify factors associated with advanced-

Comparisons of Novel Risk Stratification Models to the Current cT1a/b Staging in Incidental Prostate Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Incidental prostate cancer (PCa) patients are currently stratified to either cT1a vs. cT1b stage, depending on tumor volume (< 5% vs. > 5%) in the resected tissue. We tested for other models that could improve cancer-specific survival (CSS) predictions. METHODS: Incidental (cT1a/cT1b) PCa patients were retrospectively identified within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2004-2015). Kaplan-Meier plots illustrated CSS at 5 years of follow-up. Combination of variables resulted in three distinct stratification models based on cT1a vs. cT1b and Gleason scor

Surgical Outcomes of Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomies Based on Uterine Cancer Staging.

OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive surgery is effective for early-stage uterine cancer due to its confinement to the corpus uteri. Stage 1 endometrial cancer has two subgroups: stage 1A (<50% myometrium invasion) and stage 1B (≥50% myometrium invasion). We compared outcomes of total laparoscopic hysterectomies (TLHs) based on these distinct stages. METHODS: We analyzed TLHs using the 2021 American College of Surgeons National Surgery Quality Improvement Program targeted hysterectomy database, including only stage 1A and stage 1B corpus uteri cancer cases. RESULTS: From the database, 1287 patient

Integrating systemic therapy in the earlier stages of liver cancer.

The treatment of advanced primary liver cancer has seen major improvement in recent years. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), immunotherapy has improved both survival and quality of life. In biliary tract cancers (BTC), immunotherapy has shown modest benefits, while molecular targeted therapies have had a major impact in selected populations defined by molecular alterations. These advances are now being tested at earlier disease stages. In this review, we first discuss the challenges in designing trials that combine local and systemic treatment at earlier stages, and the different endpoints th

Emergency Surgery Independently Predicts Postoperative Recurrence in Patients with Pathologic T3N0M0 Colon Cancer: A Retrospective Single-Center Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pathologic stage IIA (T3N0M0) colon cancer represents a heterogeneous subgroup of stage II disease with variable recurrence risk despite similar TNM staging. Although several clinicopathological high-risk features are incorporated into current treatment guidelines, the independent prognostic significance of emergency surgery remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to identify clinicopathological predictors of postoperative recurrence, with particular emphasis on the prognostic impact of emergency surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-ce
