Energy conservation education intervention for people with end-stage kidney disease receiving haemodialysis (EVEREST): A two-arm parallel group study.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common symptom in kidney failure and impacts on health-related quality of life. Educational interventions involving energy conservation strategies have effectively reduced fatigue in people with other chronic diseases. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of an energy conservation education intervention for people with kidney failure receiving haemodialysis (EVEREST). DESIGN: A two-arm parallel group study with haemodialysis shift randomisation. METHODS: Recruitment commenced in April 2022 and included 126 participants receiving haemodialysis who met the eligibi

Eosinophilic meningitis epidemiological data from a national database in Thailand's Department of Disease Control: a pragmatic, retrospective analytical study.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic meningitis (EOM) is a rare neurological disease that can be misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. Based on reported cases in the literature, there have been 2,827 cases worldwide since 1945. There are limited data on the prevalence and trends of EOM in a real-world setting, even in Thailand, the country with the highest prevalence of EOM. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of EOM and EOM epidemiological data in a real-world setting. METHODS: This was a pragmatic, retrospective analytical study using a national database. We retrieved EOM epidemiological d

"I must be in control!": the role of irrational beliefs, challenge and threat, and self-control, in the mental health of employees.

INTRODUCTION: In the working population, the prevalence of poor mental health continues to increase. Employees are often confronted by workplace stressors, but it is not the experience of stressors alone which determines poor mental health. There are various psychological factors which may increase risks to mental health. The present study investigates how specific psychological factors, namely irrational beliefs, challenge and threat evaluations and self-control, may interact to influence employee mental health indicated by symptoms of anxiety, depression, and anger. METHODS: Three hundred a

Housing and health--current issues and implications for research and programs.

This article provides an overview of the ways in which the home environment can affect human health, describes how specific health hazards in housing are related, and considers implications of these concerns for research and programs to address the health-housing connection. The widespread availability of decent housing has contributed greatly to improvements in health status in developed countries through, for example, provision of safe drinking water, proper sewage disposal, and protection from the elements. However, a lack of decent housing and homelessness among a significant number of Ame

Infection control measures on ships and in ports during the early stage of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009.

Shipping companies were surveyed to evaluate the effect of public health measures during the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic of 2009 on ship and port operations. Of 31 companies that operated 960 cruise, cargo, and other ships, 32% experienced health-screening measures by port health authorities. Approximately a quarter of ports (26%) performed screening at embarkation and 77% of shipping companies changed procedures during the early stage of the pandemic. Four companies reported outbreaks of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 on ships, which were ultimately stopped through infection control practic

Type of Refugee Accommodation and Health of Residents: A Cross-Sectional, Population-Based Cluster Analysis in South-West Germany.

Objectives: Few studies have assessed whether refugees' health is associated with accommodation characteristics. We aimed to devise a typology of refugee accommodation based on variables on the accommodation and its physical context before assessing its association with health in multivariate analyses. Methods: We performed a cluster analysis based on a hierarchal, agglomerative clustering algorithm using Euclidean Distance and Ward's method. We analysed accommodation clusters based on number of inhabitants, degree of housing deterioration, urbanity of location (urban/rural distinction), and r

Resistance exercise snacks improve muscle mass in female university employees: a prospective, controlled, intervention pilot-study.

BACKGROUND: Although resistance training (RT) is essential to preserve musculoskeletal fitness and maintain a healthy, independent life into old age, few women perform RT. We investigated whether resistance exercise snacking (RES) could be an efficient training approach for the workplace health promotion (WHP) to minimize barriers for participation and facilitate RT in women in order to improve musculoskeletal fitness. METHODS: This pilot-study followed a prospective, controlled intervention design. Female employees with sedentary occupations doing RT on less than 2 days/week before study par

Nasal carriage of MRSA among clinically affiliated undergraduate students at the College of Health and Medical Sciences, Haramaya University, Ethiopia.

Medical and health science students are among the demographics most at risk from Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is a serious hazard to public health. The main reservoir for MRSA is the nasal cavity, and colonization of this area can raise the risk of infection and transmission in healthcare settings. This study aimed to assess the nasal carriage rate of MRSA among clinically affiliated students at Haramaya University, College of Health and Medicine Sciences, Ethiopia, from July to August 2022. An institution-based cross-sectional study of 250 study participants was c

Exercise capacity, cardiovascular and metabolic risk of the sample of German police officers in a descriptive international comparison.

Background: The police force has the mandate to protect citizens and enforce the law for public safety. Employment in the police force is recognized as a dangerous occupation and characterized by job-related physical hazards. Therefore, good health and adequate physical condition are necessary. This study aimed to determine cardiovascular, cardiorespiratory, and metabolic risk parameters of German police officers (POs) in comparison to POs from other nations. Methods: 55 male police officers from Germany participated in the survey. We examined anthropometric measurements, cardiovascular/metabo

Seroepidemiology of toxoplasmosis in rural and urban communities from Los Rios Region, Chile.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is a prevalent protozoan infection with a complex lifecycle and wide profile of risk factors. The impact of congenital infection is well documented; however, there is increasing evidence of a much broader range of potential health outcomes and the need to improve our understanding of the transmission patterns and infection sources in the overall population. This study examined the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis in distinct community types from a highly endemic area of Chile. METHODS: A cross-sectional serosurvey was carried out in households from urban slums, rural vi

[Organization of work, hardship at work, mobbing: new problem areas that must be considered by the competent doctor in formulating fitness evaluation].

In recent years, in addition to the more common occupational-health risks (chemical, physical, biological), increasing importance is given to psychological and psychosomatic illness as a result of malfunction in the organization of work: burn-out, mobbing, maladjustment at work. In order to be able to evaluate the influence of such phenomenon whilst judging fitness in some working realities in Sicily, 18 small, medium and large dimension companies with a total of 1413 employees were examined. The typology of the work embraced the industrial, health, information-technology, construction and tel

Alcohol, stress-related factors, and short-term absenteeism among urban transit operators.

Transit operators, relative to workers in many other occupations, experience high levels of work-related stress, as documented through neuroendocrine elevations on the job vis-a-vis resting states (J Occup Health Psychol. 1998;3:122-129). Previous research suggests that self-reported job stress is associated with higher levels of alcohol consumption among transit operators (Alcohol Clin Exp Res. 2000;24:1011-1019) and with absenteeism (Working Environment for Local Public Transport Personnel, Stockholm: Swedish Work Environmental Fund, 1982; Work Stress. 1990;4:83-89). Predictors of elevated blood lead levels among 3-year-old Ukrainian children: a nested case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Lead is common in the general population. However, data are lacking for the Ukraine and many other countries from the former Soviet Union (FSU). In this study we evaluate the level of blood lead among 212 Ukrainian children and determine predictors of elevated lead levels. We also describe the health effects associated with elevated blood lead. METHODS: A nested case-control study from a prospective cohort of Ukrainian 3-year-old children was conducted in March 1998. Blood assays were analyzed for lead by labs at the Centers for Disease Control and using portable examination kits.

Kidney health among adolescents living in a high-risk region for CKDu.

BACKGROUND: An epidemic of chronic kidney disease of uncertain origin (CKDu) imposes devastating mortality and morbidity in Central America, where the disease is termed Mesoamerican Nephropathy (MeN). MeN typically presents in young men working in heat-intensive manual jobs, notably agriculture, although the full disease etiology is unclear. Kidney health among young people in the region, particularly among females and those not employed in agriculture, is poorly characterized, limiting prevention efforts. METHODS: We analyzed questionnaire and biospecimen data collected in 2023 from adolesce

Presenteeism Among Health Care Personnel With COVID-19.

IMPORTANCE: Presenteeism-defined as continuing to work during an illness-poses a public health risk in the workplace and is especially hazardous within health care institutions where vulnerable patients may be exposed to nosocomial infections. Understanding the frequency and characteristics of health care personnel (HCP) who report presenteeism while ill with COVID-19 may help mitigate SARS-CoV-2 spread in hospitals and other health care institutions. OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of presenteeism among HCP with symptomatic COVID-19, and to evaluate the demographic, occupational, and

Effects of the combined exposure to chemicals and unusual working hours.

OBJECTIVE: Both exposure to occupational chemicals and to unusual working hours have well documented effects on health. Determination of occupational exposure limits is, however, usually based on chemical-only exposure and assumes an 8-h workday, 5 days/week and a 40-h work week. A significant proportion of the workforce is exposed to chemicals while working in other work schedules. This review thus aimed to synthesize and evaluate the scientific support for a combined effect of unusual working hours and chemical exposure and, if possible, give recommendations for OEL adjustments to account fo
