This study examines whether the presence of state residence restrictions resulted in changes in statewide rates of forcible rape. It builds on the limited geographic coverage of prior studies by including state-level Uniform Crime Report (UCR) data across 19 years for 49 states and the District of Columbia. It uses a quasi-experimental research method based on a longitudinal fixed-effects panel model design, which can help control for relatively static differences between states. Results indicate that when a state residence restriction was present, regardless of how it was measured, rates of U

Primary microcephaly is a genetically heterogeneous condition characterized by reduced head circumference (-3 SDS or more) and mild-to-moderate learning disability. Here, we describe clinical and molecular investigations of a microcephalic child with sensorineural hearing loss. Although consanguinity was unreported initially, detection of 13.7 Mb of copy neutral loss of heterozygosity (cnLOH) on chromosome 9 implicated the CDK5RAP2 gene. Targeted sequencing identified a homozygous E234X mutation, only the third mutation to be described in CDK5RAP2, the first in an individual of non-Pakistani d

BACKGROUND: Acute onset vomiting and diarrhoea is one of the most common illnesses of infancy, and is second only to respiratory illnesses as a cause of childhood deaths worldwide. Existing guidelines for management of diarrhoea are often ignored in public and private practice, possibly because of a perception that the guidelines are too simple, or because of expectations of the need to give 'real' drug therapy to stop diarrhoea.
OBJECTIVES: This guideline provides a problem-based approach to the basics of present-day management of acute gastroenteritis, and discusses the evidence for the rec

Slit-ventricle syndrome (SVS) is characterized by headaches associated with subnormal ventricular size in patients with shunt-treated hydrocephalus. It commonly occurs in children who have had shunts placed at an early age and is diagnosed when computed tomography scans are carried out to investigate suspected shunt obstruction with an accompanying rise in intracranial pressure (ICP). Overdrainage of cerebrospinal fluid may additionally result in craniocephalic disproportion, potentially by dampening the normal expansile pulsations of the dura against the skull, which leads to craniostenosis.

Echinococcosis/hydatidosis is a parasitic zoonosis caused in humans by the larval stage of the Echinococcus granulosus cestode. Although notification of infestation is required, there are no reliable data on the prevalence of this parasitosis among humans in Italy. This zoonosis was first reported in ancient times (Hippocrates, fourth century BC) and since then many cases of echinococcosis/hydatidosis have been described. Currently, it is considered one of the main parasitoses affecting animals bred for income and one of the most important parasitic zoonoses. We present the clinical case of a

Kwashiorkor is a type of protein-calorie malnutrition often seen in children of impoverished countries and famine. The condition occurs in the setting of insufficient protein intake in the presence of sufficient caloric intake. We report a case of a 8-month-old male infant in the suburban Detroit, MI, USA who presented with diffuse edema, erythroderma and desquamation, a "bull-dog" face, diarrhea, and irritability, consistent with kwashiorkor as a result of severe dietary restriction. The mother had placed the child on a severely restrictive diet, consisting only of RICE DREAM((R)) milk, sweet

Recently, the prevalence of genotype A in patients with acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has markedly increased in Japan. We encountered a 1-year-old infant who was infected with HBV genotype A and became an HBV carrier. His grandfather was identified as an HBV carrier; however, the grandfather was not aware of chronic HBV infection. This was a case of intrafamilial transmission. In addition, the child's father developed acute hepatitis B within 1 month of the infant's diagnosis. Molecular analysis revealed that the HBV isolates from the grandfather, the infant, and the father had ident

INTRODUCTION: Lower Spigelian hernia is a very rare entity. The clinical findings are similar to those of inguinal hernias and in many cases may be misdiagnosed. In the literature, only a few references to this entity have been reported in children. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of a lower Spigelian hernia in a child who presented with an acute painful scrotum.
CASE PRESENTATION: We discuss the case of a 6-year-old Greek boy who presented to our emergency department complaining of severe pain in the left inguinal area and scrotum. The acute painful swelling start

Hereditary pancreatitis is defined as a family history of two or more relatives with pancreatitis and clinical, biochemical, or radiologic evidence of pancreatitis. This is the fourth family described with hereditary pancreatitis related to mutation c.364C>T (p.R122C) of PRSS1 gene. The index case was a four year old child who had had his first episode of abdominal pain at age three. At that time he was admitted in hospital for two days and he improved with analgesic treatment only. One year later, in a second similar episode, he had been diagnosed with pancreatitis. His father was submitted t

BACKGROUND: Stump appendicitis is a delayed complication of appendectomy. It is rare and few cases reported in the paediatric literature. The authors report on another case in a child and focus on the diagnostic peculiarities of this entity.
CASE: A 9-year-old boy with previous history of open appendectomy was admitted for a right lower quadrant pain with bilious vomiting and fever. Physical examination demonstrated tenderness in the right lower quadrant and guarding over the appendectomy scar. The white blood cell count was 23.500 cells/mm3. INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is caused by hereditary factors but it can only really be understood using a model that takes into account the interaction between genes and the environment. Discipline styles stand out among the factors offered by the familial environment that can influence the course of ADHD.
AIMS: To compare the discipline styles employed by mothers of children with and without ADHD and to analyse how the subtype of ADHD and the presence of oppositional defiant disorder influence the discipline styles utilised by mothers of children with ADHD.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: We underwent a retrospective study of five cases of testicular cancer in undescended testis. The parameters of study were: age at diagnosis, circumstances of diagnosis, values of tumour markers, and pathological aspects of tumours after removal. The data were studied using the medical records of patients.
RESULTS: Mean age was 30, 6 years (27; 34). Only 1 patient had a child at the time of diagnosis. All patients came to our clinic for a general state impairment associated to an abdominal palpable mass. The increase of the value of tumour markers was not constant. A caps

The causes of child morbidity in Africa, which are extremely varied, raise a series of aetiopathogenic questions related to socio economics, socio-politics culture, religion and medicine. Development and conclusions. The paper analyses the morbid particularities of malaria in African children, in which numerous (often poorly understood) neurological manifestations are predominant. We also deal with the role played by arterial cerebrovascular malformations, above all in vascular obliterations due to congenital anomalies of haemoglobin or caused by clots formed by the accumulation of Plasmodium

Markers of humoral and cellular immunity in 16 patients with vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) were evaluated. Signs of immunodeficiency (decrease of T- and B-lymphocytes counts, impaired synthesis of immunoglobulins, defects of phagocytosis, decrease of NK number) were revealed in all of the patients. Majority of them (81.3%) had defects in humoral immunity. Decrease of CD31, CD4+ and CD8+ was detected in 86.7, 35.7 and 91.7% of the patients respectively. Study of serum immunoglobulins performed in 15 patients showed decrease of IgG, IgM and IgA levels in 6 (40%), 1 (6.7%) and

In the paper the problem of joint arthroplasty in children who have not reached their maturity is raised. The arthroplasty concerns replacement of a joint that does not function due to bone sarcoma that a child suffers from. Osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma are the most common types of pediatric bone cancer and they afflict mainly long bones, i.e. femur and tibia. In such cases there are only two options: to amputate the affected limb or to replace the diseased bone. It goes without saying that the latter solution is most acceptable by patient and surgeon. However, a special prosthesis has to

Syphilis rates in women and congenital syphilis rates have declined steadily in the United States in recent years. However, syphilis remains a worldwide public health problem, with more than 12 million cases in adults and more than half a million pregnancies affected yearly. Prenatal screening and treatment programs are limited or nonexistent in many developing countries. The genome of Treponema pallidum, one of the smallest among prokaryotes, has been sequenced, but methods for continuous in vitro cultivation of the microbe remain elusive. There are no promising candidates for future vaccines

Women with epilepsy are less likely to bear children than women in the general population, and although this reduced fertility can be attributed in part to effects of the disease itself, the effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), including changes in reproductive endocrine function, are also a factor. Conversely, some AEDs interact with oral contraceptives and can increase the risk for contraceptive failure and unplanned pregnancy. Women with epilepsy also have elevated rates of congenital anomalies and major malformations in their offspring, for which exposure of the developing fetus to AEDs

Since January 2004, hexavalent combined vaccines are available in Belgium. They protect children simultaneously against 6 diseases (poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, invasive infections with Haemophilus influenzae type b and hepatitis B) and reduce the number of needed injections. Acellular pertussis vaccine is the corner-stone of the combination. Theoretically, only 5 visits and 6 injections are needed to complete the vaccination of the children. In addition to the reduction of injections and consequently a better comfort for the child, Hexavalent vaccination favours an increase

Legitimate concerns on the part of parents and guardians may lead to requests for sterilization of a mentally retarded person in their care. At the same time, mentally retarded persons must be protected from actions that do not serve their best interests. This paper will review the history of involuntary sterilization in the United States and evaluate the ethical arguments that are relevant to decisions about involuntary sterilization. While other, less permanent forms of contraception might be acceptable, involuntary sterilization ought not be performed on mentally retarded persons who retain

BACKGROUND: A partial or complete failure in the involution of the primary optic vesicle resulting in the formation of a cyst is an extremely rare anomaly known as congenital cystic eye. The primary optic vesicle is formed but instead of the anterior part of the vesicle involuting to lie in apposition with the posterior part, a cyst persists at birth and replaces the eye.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of congenital cystic eye associated with multiple dermal appendages in a 1-day-old female child. This condition presented at birth as a large orbital mass in the left orbit that bulged for
